What planet is Starmer on?

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:08

So, I vote Labour usually, I like their values etc. However wtf - at a time when Boris is vulnerable Starmer comes out tonight with a back up Boris speech? No need - the website has crashed, queues are huge - he didn’t need any reinforcement of his bag a booster message.
Just incredulous he’s wittering on.

@Noeuf I think you must have missed Starmer is today 13pts ahead on 'most capable PM'. This is the most important indicator for predicting electability.

Noeuf · 13/12/2021 19:39

The OP appears to arguing for KS to message against medical advice so he can win political points.

Complete fabrication but don’t let that stop you making what you think is a point. I don’t see why he needed to say anything.

@rrhuth no I knew he was up - I’m commenting on tonight’s speech

@the80sweregreat

Politics is bizarre though Boris Johnson will get his restrictions through because of Labour , but an awful lot of his own MPs will vote against it! I know it's democracy in action and weird times, but I still find it bizarre.

I agree. Just trying to unpick it, why are the tories not backing it?

Why are labour then giving him the get out of jail card? Are labour not playing politics and genuinely believe plan B is correct or is there some political reason in there??

the80sweregreat · 13/12/2021 19:43

The ones who will not get the vaccines really won't be listening to either man
It's good that people are getting the boosters : let's hope it can be done ( it is a big ask )
Seeing People queuing today was positive;
Anything but lockdown is fine with me!
I really hope it can be avoided

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 19:43

He did this before at the start of the pandemic iirc

ferneytorro · 13/12/2021 19:44

I didn’t see it but it sounds a refreshing change from the we must take the opposite view to the party in power.

Is he not doing it to boost vaccine take up and encourage mask wearing amongst those who’d ignore it just because Boris is saying it rather than think whether it’s the right thing to do.

Tillsforthrills · 13/12/2021 19:45

Well done to Keir for backing the importance of the booster, putting aside political differences.

Honestly please grow up.

100problems · 13/12/2021 19:45

It was basically ‘Boris is right, could have been a bit sooner, we back Plan B’

Can't find much to disagree with to be honest.

I would agree that Boris's execution of the Booster Plan is, on current evidence, seriously flawed. But can it really be said that encouraging people to mobilise is a bad idea?

Frankly, if I could only get a booster appointment at 2pm on Xmas day, so be it. DM got her first vaccine on NYD and my in laws on Boxing Day and couldn't have legged it there faster.

BluebellsGreenbells · 13/12/2021 19:46

"Boris, you couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery, you cunt"

Well to be fair he did manage one at No10?

PinkPlantCase · 13/12/2021 19:47

I think he did a really good thing. Fair play to him for putting health first rather than just playing politics.

Also OP not everywhere is the same. Where I am there is a lot of distrust. Not many people under 40 round here want the booster.

I had mine at a walk in centre today and there were no queues. Round here when you book online you can get an appointment for the next day.

Tillsforthrills · 13/12/2021 19:47

@Puppylucky

Keir is reinforcing Johnson's weakness to the parliamentary party. If its evident that the Plan B legislation only gets through the Parliamentary vote because of Labour support then that's a major nail in Johnson's coffin. It's called playing the long game
Agree, but many won’t understand this.
echt · 13/12/2021 19:48

Starmer is doing what he should do in the pandemic, support measures that help protect people's health.

Unlike the PM of Australia who spent his time sniping at the Labor PM of Victoria, while fucking up on the vax (his job) and doing zip about quarantine facilities (his job).

burnoutbabe · 13/12/2021 19:49

Isn't it the rules that parties should receive equal prominence at all times.

So I assume it's just that. And good to read-enforce the message of yesterday-get your booster etc

Thank you for the standard MN response to someone you don’t agree with. Missed my point but never mind.

He cares more about people’s lives than political gain. What a loser.

It’s not that hard to grasp to be fair. It just will make no difference. Might hasten Johnson’s departure at the hands of his party but no one will give that any thought when it comes to ticking the box.

'Tory rebels ' always bring down their leaders, they seem to feed off it.
Steve Baker ( one example) is gruesome , he was salivating this weekend putting the boot into Boris Johnson.

You need a very thick skin to be in politics.

user1471453601 · 13/12/2021 19:55

@cheeriobye, he's "giving them a get out of jail free card" because voting for plan B is the right and moral thing to do, to help safeguard the country

I know it might seem old fashioned (after all these years when the Tory party has done what is popular/works for them and their mates) but doing the right thing,not the popular one,is still important to me

100problems · 13/12/2021 19:56

The thing is your point isn't a good one.

Starmer doesn't need to get the big stick out, he just needs to look measured. The Conservatives are imploding nicely all on their own and drowning out their Leaders policies.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/12/2021 19:57

What were you expecting him to say OP? At times of crisis the opposition will back the govt main message and the country is so polarised there will plenty of people who don't listen/don't want to know what bloody Boris has said. Getting every adult their booster and protecting the NHS are the key messages.

MrsPsmalls · 13/12/2021 19:57

@MintJulia

Maybe he thinks that people will be best protected by having a booster, and wanted to add his weight to that message. You know, to protect people! To reduce hospitalisations and deaths !

Maybe he puts people's lives before small-minded party political squabbling Hmm

This for gods sake. Like every right minded person
Postdatedpandemic · 13/12/2021 20:00

He is on the planet where the UK will have 1 million omicron cases on 31st December.

And then 2 million by lunch tine on 2nd January.

Even if omicron is very, very mild a lot of things will fuck up.

Yes it does seem a bit alien after being used to what feels like a lot of corruption and self serving within the current party.
