Something strange is happening in my bedroom and I can’t work out why!

I’m sorry, it’s not very exciting but I just don’t understand it.

I have a bedside cabinet, and about 6 weeks ago I noticed that there was some gritty rubbley type stuff on it. I wiped it away but later on there was more there. I thought I mustn’t have cleared it up properly so did it again, more thoroughly.

And basically, ever since, there’s nearly always this gritty stuff there! I can’t imagine where it’s coming from - there’s nothing above the cabinet except the ceiling and a hanging light but they don’t seem to be the source. I never hear it dropping onto the cabinet, or see it dropping, it’s just there!

Where is it coming from?!

A case of Occam's razor then.

The most obvious and simplest reason was correct.

JustLikea · 12/12/2021 14:53

In that it was the only thing on the table

SoupDragon · 12/12/2021 15:04

Apart from the invisible grit-shitting zombie spider, obviously.

@Stath She doesn't seem to have a web just this egg sac. I would feel honoured but sad if she did start weaving me a message because it would mean she was dying like Charlotte. ☹️

Was just popping on to suggest a support group with

Oh no ,the mystery is solved Sad....though no update on the number of pickled onions in the jar .

@Wendyer

I’m staggered by so many helpful suggestions - thank you!

I’m also very embarrassed to tell you that, thanks to the clever folk of mn, the mystery is solved. I want to give you all an amazing and unique denouement but the truth is - it’s coming from the reading lamp base! It looks intact but I banged it down hard a few times, and there it was, lots of grit. I never would’ve thought of that lamp as being the source so thank you.

I’m happy to report that my friend didn’t fall down a whole flight of stairs, she tripped over some Xmas decorations and only slid down a couple of steps.

Solved!

Disappointing though that it wasn't a form of ectoplasm.

But I don’t nderstand how if the grit is from the lamp base it’s projecting itself over the table. Maybe the lamp like the table is just getting covered in grit from above? And it’s been on there until you banged it?

I don’t really understand that myself because it’s not like I move the lamp around a lot. But it must be from there. I suppose I could still do the facemask/sunglasses thing just to be sure. Can’t do it now though, I’ve had Baileys :)

Trixiefirecracker · 12/12/2021 15:30

My mirror base sand/grit had me puzzled for an awfully long time before realisation dawned Confused
CovidCorvid · 12/12/2021 15:35

I think you need to remove the lamp and see if it still carries on.

Daisyv2 · 12/12/2021 15:40

Mice I think. They get covered in stuff and leave stuff everywhere

THIS!!!!

I can't understand how an inanimate lamp can cleverly disperse grit across the surface of the unit!!
And how is the lamp managing to create a clear central pile of grit several inches from it Shock.

Confused
Wendyer · 12/12/2021 16:08

@DameMargaretofChalfont I don’t know! I think that’s why I never suspected the lamp because it doesn’t get moved around much!

It’s the Grit Fairy, employed by your local council, in anticipation of indoor snow. Just in time for Christmas.

Gwennid · 12/12/2021 16:15

The mystery continues.....

Wendyer · 12/12/2021 16:16

Trust me to get a Grit Fairy. I bet other people get Gold Fairies, or Win-the-Lottery Fairies, or useful Fairy Godmothers like Cinderella had!

No no it's not the lamp I'll refuse to believe it,I was enjoying this thread and now its ruined

toldgoodDog · 12/12/2021 16:28

The last time I saw grit like that, the pest control man happened to be in. He immediately said it was vermin in the cavity above (turned out to be a rat unfortunately).

@Hollywolly1, I’m sorry, it’s actually the local grit spreaders de-icing my bedside table but I didn’t think anyone would believe that so I just said it was the lamp …

But it CANT be the lamp?! When you posted the photo of the paper on the table the lamp wasn't there?? And how does a lamp project grit from its base across the table? I'm not having this OP. Please conduct further tests.

I'm with @ImprobablePuffin that your suggestion it is the lamp is puffin improbable...
ImprobablePuffin · 12/12/2021 17:19

@Choux I see what you did there. I enjoyed it very much Grin
