What after-dinner drinks do you like ?

I like to have a couple of glasses of wine with my main nosh and another one to drink with some cheese or just on its own afterwards (I can make a bottle of wine do two meals that way). A glass or two of Port is also nice with cheese; I haven't bought a bottle in years but I always remember how much I like it whenever I do. Provided it isn't too sweet. I'm also a fan of brandy generally; I can't afford posh Cognac like Remy Martin but I'm very happy with St.Remy or Morrison's Best French. I used to love Metaxa when on holiday in Greece and always brought some back with me. I've never had Malmsey or Marsala or White Port - I'm not sure what food, if any, would suit those. My Dad used to like dessert wines like Tokay and Sauternes but I think they would be too sweet for my palate. Again, it's probably a matter of finding a suitable food accompaniment.

After fish and chips, tea is best!

My Mum and Dad once brought a bottle of farm-distilled Calvados back from France. I didn't taste it but it was that potent the fumes went all the way from the dining room to the top landing. I hope the controlled-production stuff is more refined.

Armagnac. Too expensive to justify a bottle just for me, but my mum and I have been working our way down a very nice one she brought back from France a few years ago and gets produced at Christmas.

WildRosie · 11/12/2021 21:08

I'd forgotten about liqueur coffees! I used to make a very credible Irish coffee years ago but Irish whiskey is a bit pricey these days. My Mum used to love Tia Maria, but straight from the bottle with a blob of cream on top.

Armagnac also good.

I love a Disaronno on ice at the end of a meal. It feels too sweet to start the evening with.

Fizzbo · 12/12/2021 09:17

Cotswold Cream Liqueur. It’s even better than Baileys.

DingADingDong · 12/12/2021 09:53

God, this is brining back some memories, I was going to say tea Grin
I need to get some Baileys

WildRosie · 12/12/2021 11:06

Disaronno is Italian, I think. Never had it. I'm always amazed at how popular Bailey's and its imitations are, but throughout the year. My BIL and some friends used to like Southern Comfort and Drambuie. Each to their own, I guess. I believe Prince Charles acquired a taste for cherry brandy when he was at Gordonstoun.

Port
Tia Maria
Crème de menthe frappée
Bénédictine

Palavah · 12/12/2021 11:15

Sauternes
Fernet Branca
Negroni
Vermouth

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/12/2021 11:23

Negroni is a cocktail. I'd have vermouth as an aperitif, but my favourite is Campari.

Liqueurs are traditionally for after dinner. Things like homemade damson gin, amaretto, frangelico, etc are good.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 12/12/2021 11:24

Amaretto 🥰

Also please don't use the word NOSH. It makes me go all cringey.

WildRosie · 12/12/2021 11:27

A thousand apologies. How about 'tuck' ?

SpookyScarySkeletons · 12/12/2021 11:32

@WildRosie ok I can cope with tuck 😂😂

(Where I am from Nosh means a blow job... I would definitely need an amaretto after that!)

WildRosie · 12/12/2021 11:48

Tuck it is. I too have heard nosh used in the way you described in my area. But not by me!

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 12/12/2021 11:50

Liqueur coffee with Amaretto.

newmum0604 · 12/12/2021 12:08

Frangelico!

WildRosie · 12/12/2021 21:06

Frangelico is another new one on me.

Is Asbach brandy any good ? It's £22 in Booth's until early January , normally £25. Not a huge discount but might be worth an adventure.

An amaro like Montenegro.

FireworkParrot · 12/12/2021 22:23

A double measure...one shot of brandy, half a shot of amaretto and half a shot of cointreau. It's sweet but not too sweet because of the brandy.

Ifionlyknewthenwhatiknownow3 · 12/12/2021 22:55

Well, it has to be a Sambuca sipped. A digestif.

MrsJackRackham · 12/12/2021 23:15

Amaretto is the devil's drink, I hate all things almond. Envy not envy.
I like a Tia Maria with loads of ice. My dad loved, loved Drambuie but that and Glayva are far too sweet for me. Most liquors are too sweet. A port with some cheese and biscuits or some Pedro Ximenez sherry over vanilla ice cream the is lovely.

lucascriesalot · 12/12/2021 23:16

I'm 63

RampantIvy · 12/12/2021 23:19

Baileys, but generally once I have eaten I don't want to drink any more alcohol, so my preference is tea or coffee.
