Recommend me a good vegetarian cook book

DP and I are looking to cook more in the way of veggie dishes so are looking for a cook book or two for inspiration. We're both pretty confident in the kitchen. Anyone got any good books they could recommend me? Thanks

East by Meera Sodga is my absolute favourite. If you only buy one vegetarian cookbook I would buy this one. You'll need to invest in a handful of specialist ingredients, but once you have a few staples the recipes are simple and excellent. Chilli tofu (or paneer) is my favourite.

Mob Veggie is alright for standard tacos, curries, pastas - basic vegetarian comfort foods.

The green roasting tin good. Some recipes are standard weekday stuff, some are a bit more imaginative.

River cottage Veg Everyday, and all the Riverford books are good if you want inspiration for jazzing up side dishes. Not so good for all-in-one vegetarian meals though.

Green Roasting Tin, Veg Everyday and Fresh India (by Meera Sodha) would be my recommendations for good, currently available veggie cookbooks. Also Veggiestan (Sally Butcher).

I have been vegetarian for decades, and the books I still use most are Madhur Jaffrey's Eastern Vegetarian and her World Vegetarian, but I think they are out of print at the moment.

Ottolenghi is great for vegetarians.

Sorry, I should have mentioned but I used to be vegetarian when i was a student many moons ago, so I've got the basics covered. I was just looking for something for a bit of inspiration.

I've got a Riverford cookbook and I know what you mean about great sides, but not so many full meals.

I've also already got a roasting tin cookbook and I'm just not a fan I'm afraid.

Been having a look at the Meera Sodga book though and that's just the kind of thing I'm looking for. Thanks!

Ooh i think FIL has one of those Madhur Jeffrey books - I might see if I can borrow it!

Leith’s vegetarian bible is very good and has a range of standards/complexity.

Of course Ottolenghi’s books are great for veggies too.

I also have the full range of ‘roasting tin’ books - the ‘green’/veggie one is by far the best.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 10/12/2021 13:07

I used to be veggie and still really like Rose Elliott.

MSJK · 10/12/2021 13:09

Anna Jones books are great! A modern cook’s year is my favourite. Full of seasonal veggie dishes that won’t make you miss having meat. I also second “East”, I cook from this book a lot!

BlueChampagne · 10/12/2021 13:17

I like the Good Housekeeping one www.awesomebooks.com/book/9780091851644/good-housekeeping-step-by-step-vegetarian-cookbook/used

CorneliaStreet · 10/12/2021 13:27

One Pot, Pan, Planet by Anna Jones, good mix of stuff

Root, Stem, Leaf, Flower by Gill Meller, interesting recipes and a beautiful looking book

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 10/12/2021 13:34

This was my first vegetarian cook book and I still use it loads www.amazon.co.uk/Leiths-Vegetarian-Bible-Polly-Tyrer/dp/0747557160?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Crinkle77 · 10/12/2021 18:17

Another vote for Hugh Farnley Whittingstall.

tectonicplates · 10/12/2021 18:25

Another vote for the Green Roasting Tin. Fab!

JuneOsborne · 10/12/2021 18:31

I don't rate the green roasting tin!

Ottolenghi all the way.

spongedog · 11/12/2021 12:30

I like one pot cooking so do rate the roasting tin books but like the original one. However I tend now to use BBC Good Food and Food bloggers. I really like Anna's Family Kitchen - the meals are often meat based but she has a vegetarian child so is always willing to suggest adaptions.

I also follow Smitten Kitten and Love n Lemons.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 11/12/2021 12:37

If you like spice then this is an amazing book! They won britains best restaurant on some Gordon Ramsey show a few years back and I am lucky enough to live quite close to it! Beautiful food 🥰

I second this one. Easy recipes that don’t use complicated ingredients.

BigMamaFratelli · 11/12/2021 17:33

I've got one of the roasting tin ones (not the vegetarian one) and I'm not really a fan.

I like the idea of looking at food bloggers though.

I've also got an ottolenghi one and although the recipes are lovely they're a bit faffy. What are the veggie ones like?

OP posts:
maudmadrigal · 11/12/2021 18:23

Most of my favourites have been mentioned already. Ottolenghi is a bit faffy, but really good!

We have 3 Anna Jones books, and I think One Pot, Pan, Planet is my favourite.

Really like the Green Roasting Tin, but I don't have any of the others.

East is great.

Really like the Good Housekeeping one - it was my first veggie book and still gets used 20 years on.

The one I really like that hasn't been mentioned yet is 15 minute vegan on a budget. It's got loads of good stuff in it. I think there are others in the series too.

Oinkypig · 11/12/2021 19:26

Rose Elliot, complete vegetarian, I would
say a vegetarian delia smith. Her recipes really work and although traditional it has things you would never have thought of without having to visit 11 different shops to gather up the ingredients. I make her vegan sponge which is honestly the nicest cake you will ever have.

Oinkypig · 11/12/2021 19:29

And I am a hopeless baker so if I can make it anyone can!

mrsawhite · 11/12/2021 19:46

Anna Jones. Love her books!!

BigMamaFratelli · 12/12/2021 19:45

Well East by meerha sodha arrived this afternoon and I've had my head stuck in it ever since. There's so much I want to cook! All I have to do now is decide which of the other books I've been recommended to buy nextGrin

I love the Deliciously Ella books. Full of really tasty meals.
