Do you give your postie anything at Christmas?

And if so, what?

I've been having a lot of parcels delivered this year and see my postie to talk to at least twice a week. Thought it might be nice to give her something this year.

Any ideas?

My parents have always given the regular house visitors 'Christmas notes'. It has gone up over the years, but is now:
Postman £10
Binmen £10
Weekday paper girl £10
Sunday paper boy £5
The note used to be sellotaped, in a labelled envelope, to the outside of the front door, ir the bin, the night before, but now my dad tries to catch them in person over the Christmas period.

Singerleon · 10/12/2021 10:19

Yes we do. I actually put a box outside for the week before Christmas and ask all Posties, delivery drivers, takeaway delivery people, window cleaner etc to chose something. The box usually contains a mix of wine, beers, chocolates, sweets, biscuits etc.
I frame it as a thank you for the year just gone rather than ‘Christmas’ specifically.

I might if we ever saw him! Our post at the moment is horrendous, first class parcels are taking weeks to arrive

We give the postman a tenner, also the milkman and binmen, fiver to the paper boy.

emmathedilemma · 10/12/2021 10:21

No but then mine makes no effort to interact with you even when he knocks with a parcel.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/12/2021 10:23

Yes, a £20 tip.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 10/12/2021 10:27

A tenner in an envelope

CrimbleCrumble1 · 10/12/2021 10:27

He’s fantastic

Isthisjustnormal · 10/12/2021 10:31

I’ve given mine biscuits and chocolates in the past: he’s an absolute diamond and I know we are near the end of his round so he has space to stash them before the end of his shift. Ditto for the bin men who are also really lovely and helpful, and always wave at the little boy opposite who loves rubbish lorries!!

Highlanders372 · 10/12/2021 10:54

DH is a postie. He gets lots of lovely tips around this time of year, people are very kind. Last year He had £670 in total. It's an affluent, rural area where he sees a lot of his customers daily and often goes out of his way to help them. He's had the same round for 15 years so they know him well.

Biscuits and chocolates always go down well. He gets far too much wine though and I don't drink so we end up sharing it amongst friends and family or he'd be pickled by the new year!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/12/2021 11:36

Always, usually a tenner but might up it this year. Our postman is lovely.

We also tip the milkman, bin men and paper ‘boy’ (man).

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/12/2021 11:59

Our postie is lovely. Last year we gave her wine & posh biscuits. We've discovered she likes gin so that's what she'll get this year 😊.

LizziesTwin · 10/12/2021 12:01

We give cash in a Christmas card to the bin men and postman.

devuskums · 10/12/2021 12:03

Last year I also tipped our Asda delivery woman, she was amazing during the lockdowns!

SW1amp · 10/12/2021 12:08

Tenner in a Christmas card
Same for the milkman and paper girl

Bin men get £20 but they turn a blind eye to my cardboard mountains, and are really patient and kind when DS wants to stand and watch them pressing the buttons on the bin lorry..!

OhFGSWhenDoesItStop · 10/12/2021 12:09

I don't and I always feel bad about it, but he's never on our round in December and I always forget before it's too late.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/12/2021 12:12

Do all the people buying gifts for their postperson
a) have the same person delivering their post all year and
b) actually see their postperson when they deliver
I'm almost always at work when the post arrives Monday to Friday and unless there is something too big for the letterbox I don't see person on Saturday either (live in a flat and can't see postman arriving at the communal door or at my door). When I do see them to receive a parcel it either isn't the same person I saw last time I had a parcel, or the last parcel was so long ago that I don't remember what the last person looked like.

Mummyme87 · 10/12/2021 12:14

Our postie changes regularly, and the one we see most is miserable as sin. So no I don’t.

devuskums · 10/12/2021 12:17

I have 2 postmen at the moment, one is lovely and he will be getting a card and a tip. The other one is so rude and vile we call him Bad Santa...he is getting nothing.

bigbluebus · 10/12/2021 12:25

The only thing I give to my current postie is the mail belonging to other people which he puts through my letterbox. He does this on a fairly regular basis and sometimes he even rings the doorbell just after he's pushed the mail through when he realises he no longer has next door's letters!

Tee20x · 10/12/2021 12:27

I couldn't even tell you who mine is.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 10/12/2021 12:30

I’m going to this year because I haven’t in the past and I feel we should - have had the same one for years. Maybe £10 in a card especially since our parcel deliveries have increased so much over the last 2 years.

twinkletoedelephant · 10/12/2021 12:32

Sean our postie is lovely....even the dog is fond of him. We get him a box of hero's or something as he dosn't drink. The dustmen like bottles of larger and tubs of roses ( well worth it they bring my bin in after they have emptied it)

I also keep a box of mini treats for the delivery people ;)

Highlanders372 · 10/12/2021 12:33

OhFGSWhenDoesItStop catch him in January, late tips are always a nice surprise.

afromom · 10/12/2021 12:35

Nope ours regularly delivers wet soggy letters, several occasions the wet letters have been important certificates that will be damaged now forever, no easy way to get reprinted (e.g my MBA certificate). He also folds all letters to put them through the letter box, even small ones, once he broke DPs new bank card! I've complained 3 times and now given up.
In nice weather he stands on the corner outside our house and meets his girlfriend, proceeding to kiss her face off, which makes me boak!
No way will he get a tip from me!

I would with the bin men if I could catch them, as they have been lovely and helpful, but unfortunately don't get to see them often. We are on a main walkway to several schools etc, so I couldn't leave cash or gifts out and I'm invariably busy with work when they come so can't hand it over.
