Do you give your postie anything at Christmas?

And if so, what?

I've been having a lot of parcels delivered this year and see my postie to talk to at least twice a week. Thought it might be nice to give her something this year.

Any ideas?

No, because he is rude and not particularly good at his job - probably 50% of the stuff he shoves through our letterbox is not for us, or even our close neighbours. Sometimes, not even our road - and there is really no excuse for that as our road is the only one by that name in the UK, so it's not even as though there are similarly named roads nearby. We would give to our Tesco delivery person, except we never have the same one twice - ours comes from a depot which has over 400 drivers.

@Highlanders372

DH is a postie. He gets lots of lovely tips around this time of year, people are very kind. Last year He had £670 in total. It's an affluent, rural area where he sees a lot of his customers daily and often goes out of his way to help them. He's had the same round for 15 years so they know him well.

Biscuits and chocolates always go down well. He gets far too much wine though and I don't drink so we end up sharing it amongst friends and family or he'd be pickled by the new year!

Good for him. He's obviously well thought of by a lot of people.
Nomorepinkcurtains · 10/12/2021 12:41

Yes definitely our postie will be getting a tip. We see him most days, if only sometimes to wave, very thoughtful, even took my post to post in Lockdown when a family member being very poorly (not Covid) and we didn’t dare venture out.

The bin men leave food scraps all over the pavement, will be interesting to see if it’s any better on December, so sadly, highly unlikely they will receive anything.

I'd like to do this, I've seen mine a lot this year! What do you write in the card, I'm cringing a bit at the thought of it!

BertiesShoes · 10/12/2021 13:02

I might if we ever saw him! Our post at the moment is horrendous, first class parcels are taking weeks to arrive

Yes, same here, the last post we got was at weekend, there are various items that are usually here by 10th of a month, bank statements etc - but nothing!

Looks like our sorting office is doing weekly deliveries at the most. A local councillor complained and was told that post was delivered every other day at least but that wasn’t his experience. He waited 2 weeks for first class council minutes.

Thatwaslulu · 10/12/2021 13:07

I used to give mine a blow job (but I was married to him Grin)

DH used to get lots of tips and was always appreciative. He had a couple of high profile customers on his round (Archbishop of Canterbury - £20 tip) and the Krankies (bottle of whisky). Most people gave between £5 and £20, but he was always one to chat to old ladies and be cheerful, he really loved his job.

Shallwegoforawalk · 10/12/2021 13:17

Not our postie as it never seems to be the same one twice but my lovely DHL driver who brings my regular work parcels will get something. He's cheerful and efficient and puts up with my dog barking until he is off the premises Grin

Damnloginpopup · 10/12/2021 13:19

Reminds me of the old joke about the husband finding his wife in bed with the postie on Christmas Eve...
"When I asked you about it you said fuck him, give him a quid."

amiafreakofnature · 10/12/2021 13:21

No because we don't have a regular one
We have a regular Hermes courier and she is so lovely so will def give her something this year

ohreallynotreally · 10/12/2021 13:21

Yes definitely. Our postie is absolutely lovely and has a love / hate relationship with our dog. £10 in a Christmas card .

Akire · 10/12/2021 13:24

Yes with mine but only £5 as I’m on a low income but he always is happy smiling face that makes those few seconds much brighter on your day.

The Hermes local driver on the other hand always acts and looks like he’s come in especially for free on his day off to give you a parcel so he’s getting nothing!

itwasntaparty · 10/12/2021 13:40

No. I have. A different one every day, ditto bin men who get paid 60k.

I think it's old fashioned and outdated, unless you live somewhere we you actually know who they are.

ImInStealthMode · 10/12/2021 14:03

We left £10 in an envelope for our postie last year due to his unerring cheerfulness during lockdown, us WFH (so he was actually having to see/speak to us) and many, many parcels arriving for DP.

ALongHardWinter · 10/12/2021 15:20

I would, but we seem to have a different postman/woman every few weeks! Seems a bit unfair to only give something to the one who happens to be on that round Christmas week.

jd88123 · 10/12/2021 15:26

My postie is a bit odd... He added me on fb to message me when I have parcels. Anyways a couple of years ago he messaged to tell me he had received lots of bottles for his Xmas from people he delivers to and told me he likes whisky or prosecco!! Cheeky beggar. I then felt obliged to give him something. He's not getting anything this year as he knocks with a parcel then doesn't give me time to even get downstairs to answer and gives it to my neighbour instead.

onlyhereforthefood · 10/12/2021 15:52

We leave a selection box in our "safe place"
just as a small gesture and bit of fun

CarButtonCloth · 10/12/2021 16:47

Surprised at how many people have "a postie". We seem to have multiple different ones depending on the day/week. So mostly for that reason I wouldn't generally leave anything for them.

MadisonAvenue · 10/12/2021 21:10

If we still had the same two postmen that we had at the start of the year then yes, I would’ve given them a gift each as they were excellent and very cheerful and chatty.

However, we now have one who is rude and doesn’t even say hello and is absolutely useless at his job. Our post frequently gets delivered elsewhere on the estate. Our camera once picked him up walking straight past the front of the house without coming to the door and then throwing a parcel from the footpath, over our side garden (we’re on a corner) and over the 6ft wall into the back garden. He’s also left parcels by the front door without ringing the bell.
