Talk to me about Amazon Prime?

I have just got a 'free' subscription to Amazon Prime (for the free delivery) but looked at the TV packages yesterday.

I can't see anything on there that I really fancied, but remembered Chernobyl as being recommended on here - but when I looked at it, it seemed to suggest that it would cost me £2.50 for each episode? Is this right?
We eventually watched something by James May in Japan, which was free.

I thought it was all free - paid for by the subscription? Is it maybe because I haven't paid anything yet?

No somethings you still have to pay for.

Things are 'free with amazon prime' but alot are still pay by episode.

ChessieFL · 07/12/2021 09:03

No, not everything available on Prime is free. Lots is, but then there’s stuff that anyone can pay for even if they’re not a prime member.

I like prime because I’m a tennis fan and they show lots of live tennis.

Wokemon · 07/12/2021 09:03

Chernobyl was originally on sky, that's why it costs money.

I love Amazon prime, it's easily worth it for the free delivery, and you can watch loads of free films. I've paid for the ones I really wanted but not many of them.

Callmecordelia · 07/12/2021 09:05

I like the prime version of Amazon music - there's lots on there that I like (probably because I don't listen to many current things Blush).

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/12/2021 09:07

You can filter by 'free with Prime'. There is a lot of free stuff, but its not everything.

MrsTophamHat · 07/12/2021 09:10

There's a decent amount that is free, but not everything is.

I guess that the difference is that it is really comprehensive, especially for older stuff, but a lot of it needs paid for. I'd say I still prefer Netflix, as I don't think I'd miss Prime TV as much if I had to choose.

Yes this is really good. I lost my Spotify recently when I changed phone contracts and I checked Amazon music to see if it was any good before I subscribed to Spotify again on my own. 99% of what I want to listen to is there for free (since already pay for Prime anyway) so no need for Spotify at all.
Halfarsedjingler · 07/12/2021 09:12

You need to watch upload, best thing on prime *and free

thewhatsit · 07/12/2021 09:13

Also I prefer Prime over Netflix for young children’s stuff.

helpfulperson · 07/12/2021 09:15

As others have said some stuff is free, others you pay for. Prices aren't too bad. I've just paid £20 for the latest series of startrek discovery which is 11 episodes. Loads of good films for £2.50.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/12/2021 09:15

Amazon Prime (for TV) is a bit like Netflix -- they have their own studios and production, so there's a chunk of stuff on there that's made by them or exclusively licensed to them included as part of your subscription.

Examples are The Boys, American Gods, The Man in the High Castle, The Grand Tour, Good Omens, Marvellous Mrs Maisel.

Like everything else, some of it is great, some of it is rubbish.

But on top of that they also have stuff from other distributors, but you usually have to pay for it -- think of this like buying the DVD, except you stream it rather than get a disc.

Some older stuff from other distributors is also included on Prime. Sometimes it comes on and then vanishes -- for example, for a while the entire run of The X Files was included. And then it wasn't, and then it was again. Presumably they agree time-limited deals on certain things.

Some shows that you would pay for on Amazon are included in other subscription packages, so it's often worth checking if the thing that's ££ on Amazon is included on Netflix, Disney+ or iPlayer.

IWantToBeNynaeve · 07/12/2021 09:39

I mustn't be looking properly because I've never come across anything on Prime Video that I had to pay for, but I tend to stick to the Amazon made stuff I suppose. Some of their own produced shows and films are very good, I'm loving Wheel Of Time atm (well that shouldn't be a surprise with my username 😀)

Augo · 07/12/2021 11:55

There's a lot of stuff free, but there's some channels you can pay for and films and TV you can buy to stream too. You can sort by free on prime in the menu.

Star Trek Discovery will be available free next year won’t it?
angelopal · 07/12/2021 12:02

There are lots of things that start of being paid for but if you wait long enough become free. Also look at the Amazon originals. Lots of good things there.

If you have a Kindle check out Prime reading. Lots of free books you can get.

Fatgalslim · 07/12/2021 12:17

I'm waiting for season 3 of New Amsterdam to become free, that, and the latest seasons of Chicago Med/Chicago Fire. Disappointed that Chicago PD doesn't have any season for free :-(

I didn’t know you could do that. Is it in my settings?

Zeflyinghelmetandzevetcelery · 07/12/2021 14:07

Some of the paid for films and box sets become free eventually. If you put them in your watch list the small icon on the top right of each changes from amber to blue when it becomes free.

Zeflyinghelmetandzevetcelery · 07/12/2021 14:09
  • Top left not right.
CounsellorTroi · 07/12/2021 14:29

Slightly off topic but Frasier is now available to stream for free on All4.

JovialNickname · 07/12/2021 15:32

Clarksons Farm is free on Prime, and is really good (even if you're not a massive Jeremy Clarkson fan it's really funny/interesting)

helpfulperson · 07/12/2021 15:36

@counsellertroi probably. Its also free on Friday evening on PlutoTV but not their catch up. I was just too impatient when I noticed it on prime. Which how I guess they make money Smile

lorca · 07/12/2021 17:54

You need to watch upload, best thing on prime and free - thanks for all the suggestions, any more? I'm not a great fan of Clarkson, but the james May thing was quite entertaining.
I like sci-fi, crime, mystery and comedy. I already have Virgin TiVo too.

I;m not sure I've got a filter for 'free to me' - I'll have another look. I didn't find it particularly user-friendly.
