Is it ok to go to bed with wet hair?

I'm crap at getting up early. I wake at 7am and its go go go to get the kids sorted and dropped at school (we leave at 7.50am to go to Breakfast Club), then off to work.

I manage a quick shower each am but do not have the time (currently) to wash and blow dry my hair in the mornings. As such, I was it before bed every other night.

If I'm organised I'll do it early evening then blow dry or leave to air dry before bed but once a week ish I end up going to bed with wet hair.

Is there anything "wrong" with sleeping with wet hair? I keep the towel wrapped round it as long as I can bear then take it off before I fall asleep. Is there a product that would be good to put on my hair/head for overnight sleeping with wet hair?

I know the answer to it all is "get up at 6.30" but we are 36 years in and it's just not happening.

Is it damp or wet? I’ve often slept with damp hair and both my hair and I have survived! I do sleep with a T-shirt on my head though so I don’t get a soggy pillow 😳 I know you guys will take the piss but there you go! Incidentally, I have no heat damage on my hair.

JustLarkinAbout · 06/12/2021 23:49

Yes, and it's fine, but I like it warm when I sleep, I don't do it when having to stay somewhere colder as I wouldn't like to have a cold head and it wouldn't dry by morning (this has happened!). My pillow doesn't get wet because I've usually been sat for a while before lying down so it's usually dried out at bit (and isn't very thick) and I put a doubled-up soft towel to lie on so my pillow doesn't get wet and yucky. Sometimes I use a microfibre hair turban too. My hair is in great condition due to hardly ever blowdrying it :D although it does sometimes get a bit wrinkled. If I wanted it dead straight I'd have to straighten it, but this doesn't matter as I often work from home and tie it up when I go out, and except for evenings out, and am not that fussy!

This is a great idea if you want mega amounts of dust mites in your pillow. They love the damp and regularly having a damp pillow will encourage them to proliferate. Not great, especially, if you’re asthmatic or prone to allergies.

I do it from time to time, and despite old wives’ tales about the terrible things bound to result, it’s never been an issue. Like you, OP, I can’t manage to wash and dry it on week mornings.

Yogaandcocoa · 06/12/2021 23:58

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo

Wet pillow and more likely to wake up with it pointing in funny directions, but as long as you can cope with that there's nothing wrong or damaging about sleeping with wet hair.
This

What do you think would be the problem?

RavingAnnie · 07/12/2021 00:00

I do it all the time. I have ADHD and I just have to wash my hair when I wash it. I can't plan it around other things.

I just sleep with a towel laid over my pillow.

greenlynx · 07/12/2021 00:00

I wouldn’t like to go to bed with wet hair, I would feel cold and won’t be able to fall asleep and my hair would be a complete mess in the morning.
Haven’t you got a hairdryer?

RavingAnnie · 07/12/2021 00:02

@MalbecandToast

A friend of mine did this all the time. She took the pillow protector off her feather pillow and the middle was legit green with mould Envy (not envy)
I've taken the pillow protectors off my pillows not long ago and there was no mould in sight and I've been doing this for ages. I do lay a towel over the top of my pillow though for fear it would ruin the pillows.
Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2021 00:06

How long does it take for the pillow to dry out?

MalbecandToast · 07/12/2021 00:12

I think that was the problem she didn't use the towel so the pillow was RANK!

Hairyfriend · 07/12/2021 00:12

I have very thick, wavy hair and even if I washed it in the afternoon, it would still be damp by the time I got to bed! I wrap a dry towel (not the one I've used to dry my hair) around my pillow and sleep on that. Never had any issues. In fact, I often wake up with nicer curls that if I'd blow dried it!

Yes, my head if often cold and I feel colder in myself when its wet, but I have a toasty electric blanket which helps.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2021 00:17

My hair is straight - so if I sleep on it even slightly damp it gets random kinks which look ridiculous. My curly- haired DD can sleep damp and emerge with a lovely tousled 'bed head' .EnvyGrin

thaegumathteth · 07/12/2021 00:24

How warm are all your houses? In summer I go to bed with wet hair all the time (and then regret it because of the curly frizzy mess) but if I did it in winter I'd be unbearably cold!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/12/2021 00:32

My mother used to give me dark warnings about waking up with facial paralysis if I went to bed with wet hair.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 07/12/2021 00:34

I always do! 4 plaits so it's nice and evenly wavy in the morning lol

IhateBoswell · 07/12/2021 00:36

My mum used to tell me if I went to bed with socks on my toes would suffocate and fall off, I still won't wear them 😂
My house is warm, I wouldn't go to bed with wet hair if it wasn't, I would imagine I'd freeze 🥶

ArabeI · 07/12/2021 14:24

I always sleep overnight with mine damp, unless the very rare occasion I decide to blow dry it. Though I only wash once or twice a week and wash early evening so the top part dries out; the rest of my hair being in a long plait. I also use a silk bonnet most nights, but not with very wet hair.

A plait might make your hair super curly, though.

ArabeI · 07/12/2021 14:28

Yes, soft towel over pillow if very wet. I do this when using overnight hair treatments, also.

cheeseislife8 · 07/12/2021 14:29

I do, either loose or plaited, when I'm short on time

MedusasBadHairDay · 07/12/2021 14:32

I do this all the time, not when it's soaking wet, I let it dry a bit first then when it's still damp throw it into a plait (or two).

Pillow is fine, my hair is fine (and it means no using a hairdryer, so no heat damage), and I don't have to rush around quite so much in the morning.

MedusasBadHairDay · 07/12/2021 14:34

It's a fairly normal thing to do historically too, wet sets are one of the more straight forward ways to curl hair.

luckylavender · 07/12/2021 15:25

Wouldn't you end up with mouldy pillows?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 07/12/2021 15:29

It's fine unless you want it straightened. If I sleep on wet hair I cannot straighten it in the morning for love nor money.

TallulahsCurse · 07/12/2021 15:44

No. You will die.

Wafflesnsniffles · 07/12/2021 15:50

Sleeping with wet hair wont do you any harm but its not comfy. Major bed hair in the morning too. Why not blow dry it before getting into bed? Or getting into a habit of showering earlier in the evening.
Or showering less - I only have a shower/hairwash 2-3 times a week - totally fine.
