Bloody sick of being cold working from home

I can't afford to have the heating on all day so its not set to come on till 3pm. I'm just sick of being cold working from home. I never chose to work from home and my (small) employer has chosen to never really return to the office. I'm freezing! (And no, I am not saving on commuting)

What helped me is to keep my feet warm. I find it that wool socks and legggings keep my body warm.

@ILoveMyMonkey

What about sitting in a winter tog sleeping bag rather than just blankets - no gaps for the air to get into and then couple it with some of the above layering suggestions.
I would so snap my neck forgetting I was zipped in and then running to answer the door ..

If you have a work from home job, and your employer does not pay a heating allowance then you maybe entitled to tax relief/ funding from HMRC. All details are here: www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home

A fan heater for just the room I work in.

That film double glazing is worth getting too if your windows are a bit draughty or aren't the best double glazing.

For me, it's thermals, then normal trousers and jumpers ect, then if still nippy, a dressing gown on top.
TheSmallAssassin · 06/12/2021 16:22

The tax relief is only £1.20 a week, plus, 20% of extra costs if you have proof of them.

ElfontheShelfisLookingatYou · 06/12/2021 16:26

Well schools have windows open all day and minimal if any heating at all. Most teachers and pupils are absolutely frozen, but the other side is potentially having larger viral load if Windows are shut.

ElfontheShelfisLookingatYou · 06/12/2021 16:27

Hot water bottle op and electric blanket. You have many more options open to you than many.

spinachpie · 06/12/2021 16:35

I'm wearing my skiing trousers at the moment Grin
ski trousers

Super toasty and no tripping over a sleeping bag...I learnt that one the hard way!

Snailhaterz2 · 06/12/2021 16:49

I find a brisk walk round the block after some home-made soup for lunch gets me through most of the afternoon!

thenightsky · 06/12/2021 16:53

For freezing feet I have one of these

sillysmiles · 06/12/2021 17:09

Hot water bottle for your feet. I have an electric heater for the room I'm working in and I leave that set at 18/19 deg with the door closed all day. The room is toasty but sometimes because you are sitting still you still get cold - hence I love hot water bottle!

user1471538283 · 06/12/2021 17:14

It is desperate. I feel the cold so badly so I've got our heating on (next to useless eco electric), I layer up, wear uggs and drink hot tea. I'm still cold though.

StrongLegs · 06/12/2021 17:18

Hae you tried eating lots of boiled rice? I've no idea why, but that always makes me boiling hot.

Sorry you're freezing. Our house used to be like that and I often did a lot of batch cooking on Mondays and it kept the kitchen warm until Wednesday. I didn't heat the other rooms.

GerbilCurse · 06/12/2021 17:25

I need one of those heated foot warmers, I have the heating on, an extra oil filled radiator, down filled slippers and my feet are still like ice blocks

caringcarer · 06/12/2021 17:32

Heated throw is the way to go. I.got one from Woucher last Xmas and love it.

LefttoherownDevizes · 06/12/2021 17:33

Uniqlo heat tech tracksuit bottoms. Absolutely amazing

Plantstrees · 06/12/2021 17:41

I regularly get cold feet if I sit at a desk, I assume its a circulation problem when I sit still for long periods of time, so I use a hot water bottle and it seems to make my whole body feel warmer.

Plantstrees · 06/12/2021 17:42

Sorry, that should have said that I rest my feet on the HWB.

ImFree2doasiwant · 06/12/2021 17:44

Fleece blanket abd hit water bottke or 2.

PonderingTotskeit · 06/12/2021 17:44

Check out the government web site. I think you can claim some things for working from home. I just looked. Electricity is one of them, there’s a checker to see if you’re eligible.

HaggisBurger · 06/12/2021 17:45

If the op can’t afford extra heating in the day - she can hardly rent office space. jeez

MurielSpriggs · 06/12/2021 17:47

@Whataday21

Oil filled plug in radiators are the cheapest I believe, and are what we use.
Cheaper by quite a bit I think to turn on the gas boiler (assuming that's how your main heating works) and turn off all the radiators except for the room you're in. Gas is one quarter the cost of lecky for the same amount of heat. And even allowing for the considerable inefficiency of running the boiler for one room it's probably still about half the running costs of an electric radiator to get your room to the same temperature.

(And you don't have to spend money buying an electric radiator Grin)
