Bloody sick of being cold working from home

bloodycoldagain · 06/12/2021 14:29

I can't afford to have the heating on all day so its not set to come on till 3pm. I'm just sick of being cold working from home. I never chose to work from home and my (small) employer has chosen to never really return to the office. I'm freezing! (And no, I am not saving on commuting)

I am adding more and more layers and have bought a few new jumpers.

I think I will be buying a heated throw but a friend suggested a heated pad under your feet works wonders.

An Oodie for neck to knees and old ugg boots for the feet. Maybe it'll get colder after Christmas but with these on I'm not uncomfortable.

Is your office not open at all for you to go in if you prefer? Pretty crap that you don't have the option. We're all in the office but if we get told to work from home again I'll be staying put. Our flat drops to 5 degrees in winter (no central heating) and it's impossible to work in. I totally understand.

Is there part of your house that's usually warmer? Or a smaller room you can work in that's easier to heat with an electric heater? And fingerless gloves are great if you don't already have some!

I have a hot water bottle by my feet.
and a fleece cardigan that looks nice on screen (from decathlon).
blanket on my legs and pashmina on my back.

It’s only when you go to other countries that you realize how poorly insulated the houses back home in the UK are. Where I live, it’s currently -15. We don’t have the heating on and we’re all wearing shorts and t-shirts. Meanwhile my elderly father in the UK is freezing in his house. It’s insane. I feel really sad for all of you!

You can get a tax discount if working from home. May help pay towards heating

I don't think I could get a heating allowance or anything. Why/how do you know? Have you asked?

We all got an under inflation pay increase this year too And?
Many employers are doing something to mitigate WFH costs. It's worth asking, if you haven't.

Heated throw. I have the Dreamland one. Total game changer. Can place over lap for zoom calls or wrap around shoulders when not on calls.

I wear merino base layer, and thin layers on top, thick things aren't as warm, you need to trap the heat between the layers. Wrist warmers. Good pair of slippers/house boots. I have the ones from BoJo they're lovely & don't feel like slippers, so I'd still be in 'work mode'

I'd also have an oil filled radiator in my office.

I can't work in blankets & stuff, I'd fall asleep!

I'm the same OP. I layer up in the morning... make sure all your doors are closed to keep the heat from the morning central heating in. Then I go for a really fast walk at lunchtime.. this normally warms me up until the heating comes on at 3...

Hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and then under your sock covered feet. Can keep you nice and warm.

There are tax allowances that you can claim for working from home , may be worth looking into even if it doesn’t actually help immediately . With regards to the cold put a hat on , it really does make a difference .

Another vote for a heated throw. I’ve been working from home full time since COVID with no sign of going back to the office (I’m vulnerable). I’m getting sick of being cold and cranking the heating up especially as then it’s too warm at night to sleep. I took delivery of a heated throw at lunchtime. Heating is now off. Heated blanket is on and I’m lovely and cosy. Trying to work out why I didn’t invest in one years ago

I was blimming freezing working from home earlier in year and last year come to think of it… it’s all blending into one isn’t it! Are you upstairs or down? I was trying to work downstairs and was perished and miserable. Even bought an electric throw. Then I moved upstairs. Must more toasty!! Think the heating still flicked in and off but I was definitely warmer and happier. If you’re cold in the day though mate - can you afford to have the heating flick on here and there? It’s bloody freezing 🥶!!

I nearly met a nasty end doing the sleeping bag thing. Door bell went and I completely forgot I was in it 😆

Heated throw from Lakeland. Got one two Christmases ago - it’s perfect.

And a big scarf.

OK, but I don't know if we know who the OP works for?

Trying to get up and move every hour or so is really good both for your body (uninterrupted sitting has all sorts of bad physical effects even if you're otherwise active) and eyes (getting away from staring at a screen), and will also help keep you warm. Though I confess getting out from under my snug (blanket and hot waterbottle) working nest can be a challenge.

Heated throw is the best thing ever my sister has them and I was always under them when I was visiting so I treated myself to one. I put that on when I’m in on my own during the day if I’m cold because I hate heating the whole house just for me in one room

This heater is really great with very low energy costs

I have a plug in oil filled radiator for when it's just me in the house. Plus a heated throw in case I recklessly want to go to another room. Don't get fan heaters they cost a fortune to run

I can't move from my desk but find standing up and sitting down a bit helps
Plus I have a heated throw

I refused to work from home for many reasons that being one of them also my home is my home, not my workplace. I didn't sign up to wfh so I'm back in the office.
