How much is your gas bill if you have the heating on most of the day?

I know everyone has different rates/size houses but just trying to grasp on average what others pay and their usage.

I have the heating on in the morning from when we get up for 1-2 hours and then in the evening for 2 hours. For gas and electric just doing this and having the tumble drier on once is costing us £6 per day. That is £180 per month for our gas and electric. We live in a 3 bedroom Terrance house. Our rate has just gone up and I know at the minute it's very expensive.

But when I go to other family/friends they seem to have the heating on all day and I don't understand either our rate is very high or are people paying even more and just accepting that is the price to stay warm?

That sounds a lot OP. What’s the cost for your gas alone for usage like that?

When I gave heating on for around 4 hours per day I’d expect a bill of around £60.

Comedycook · 05/12/2021 17:23

I wonder this too op...loads of people on here say they never turn their heating off Shock.

Twinstudy · 05/12/2021 17:25

That does sound a lot. We have the heating on all the time (except overnight) we both WFH and DH and ddog can't cope with the cold Grin

2 bed end terrace and our latest bill was £100 a month. It's a cold house and takes a lot of heating so yours sounds a lot!

Ours has gone up to about £125 a month. Gas and electric. We both work from home so heating on all day most days, 5 bed (newbuild so well insulated and energy efficient) detached. We cook on induction and our washing machine & dryer are fairly new and energy efficient (heat pump dryer). We are on bulb though so who knows what's going to happen with our bill.

Livedandlearned · 05/12/2021 17:27

Heating on low in a well insulated house is probably doable.

Having heating on in a large old house would need the thermostat to be higher and use a lot more.

Even if I could afford to have the heating on constantly my old stone cottage I wouldn't want to, it makes me feel ill.

bordermidgebite · 05/12/2021 17:28

How old is your boiler ?

How much insulation ?

How hot are you heating the system? By that I am suggesting that sometimes it can be better to heat the water to a lower temperature, so it takes longer to warm the house up but costs less overall. Sometimes having heating on low all day is cheaper than blasting heat for a hour , letting it cool and blasting again

InTheLabyrinth · 05/12/2021 17:29

That £6 a day will drop in summer tho. So its not 180/month when averaged over the year.

Were currently on an hour in the morning g, an hour at lunch uf someone is in, and a couple of hours in the evening. We pay £100/month, but will use more than that in winter, and less than that in the summer.

dementedpixie · 05/12/2021 17:29

I have the heating on 6-10am and 5-10pm at around 19⁰C. I will boost it during the day if I feel cold. My gas bill last month was just under £40. My electricity bill was nearly £90 though. It's not the heating that is costing us, it's the electricity.

Livedandlearned · 05/12/2021 17:29

Actually my dad was saying that his gas bill has gone up from £40 a month to £200.

He only has a gas fire, no central heating, and he lives alone.

His supplier sent him an email one day and announced that his direct debit would be increased whether he liked it or not.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 05/12/2021 17:29

My heating is always on. I turn it down a bit when I go to bed.

Bill is £140 a month

BournvilleGreen · 05/12/2021 17:30

Our gas is about £3 a day, on 24 hours because DH has a physical disability and can't manage below 19° really.
3-bed flat, but top floor.
Yours sounds quite high tbh

username29472 · 05/12/2021 17:31

Just had a look at my smart meter it says I'm on £2.58 today for gas but I have only just switched the heating back on.

I think it's really come to my attention one because our deal came to an end and we had to change. Also we both use to work full time out the house now I'm part time working from home and have a baby.

Please help your Dad to get in touch with them. Mine tried this. I will pay no more than my usage. They keep trying to tell me that I need to "build up" credit. I do not. They are trying to increase mine from 90 to £250 per month. I've told them to get lost.
mandoforever · 05/12/2021 17:35

We live in a four bedroomed semi, heating and hot water on at 10 and off at 10.30pm, if we go out it gets turned off about half an hour before we go out and set to turn on half an hour before we're home.
We run a Dishwasher, lots of electric kit, washing machine no tumble dryer.
Before my company avro went bust I was paying 77 a month and I as 140 in credit.
In the day its set at 18 at around 5pm it goes to 20.

I'm wondering if a lot of people are going to get a similar shock.

It's hard to compare because of previous years our usage has been lower. I think since we had our new rate and it sounded so much higher (we did compare) it's been on my mind and I've been checking the smart meter a lot.

Ours was £89 a month for gas and electricity with heating on 20. Hav been switched supplier and awaiting details of new direct debit but expecting it to be around £150 at least. We have turned heating down to 18 but it’s cold downstairs. Ours is on a thermostat between 6.30am and 9.30pm, off overnight.

SeekingBalance · 05/12/2021 17:43

Ours has just gone from 79 to 167 with eon, we built a debt during some snow. Apparently once that's cleared it will reduce to 130, ridiculous. I turn it on at 6am until 9am then 3pm until 6pm

gogohm · 05/12/2021 17:52

I'm paying £124 a month for 90 mins in morning 3 hours in evening plus dishwasher daily, washer and dryer 3-4 times a week term time, daily when kids are home from university

CaveWoman1 · 05/12/2021 18:02

£206 per bastard month

nannybeach · 05/12/2021 18:08

My last months was £100 electric,£44 gas, home all day (retired) I put it on when I get up around 7,it's really cold stays on till 9pm. Not had that much this year so far. Lounge faces south. If it's warm I turn it off. Cook with electric. Detached 2 bed bungalow 1960s, cavity wall insulation, good loft insulation, all doors and windows replaced with double or triple A rated in the last few years.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/12/2021 18:12

Is your new rate a new fix or are you on the standard tariff?

Hopefully it's the latter, and if not, you might be better off on the standard tariff, which you can do for free if you're still in the cooling off period, or even worth paying a penalty. The fixes on sale at the moment are far more expensive than the standard rate.

But £180 pm is probably what you should expect in winter, as you use most of your heating in winter and then it will be far cheaper in the warmer months.

Asi1 · 05/12/2021 18:15

They just reduced my bill from 93 a month to 62 for gas and electric

coronafiona · 05/12/2021 18:20

Deal has come to an end here. £150 to £300 pm. We will just have to be cold during the day when the kids are out. The biggest issue is a large north facing open plan room which we speak all day in.

Freebird61 · 05/12/2021 18:23

Ours has gone from 170 to 200 also with eon. 3 bed Victorian semi , two people wfh. In winter we leave it on low 18 all the time including night otherwise the house is freezing. On Friday night I turned the heating off because I'm concerned about the bill but yesterday had to have the heating on high all day to warm the house so I'm keeping it on for the time being.
I hate being cold and I'll sacrifice other things to feel warm at home but I do feel it's a ridiculous amount to pay. It's a big house layout wise with long hall and landing type corridors.
I love this house and it's fantastic in summer but the winter is another story.

AutumnAnn · 05/12/2021 19:12

We have our heating set to 17°c this time of the year, so it's effectively on all day to keep the house warm, it's also set to increase to 19°c from 0600-0830 and 1800-2230. We also have 2 of us showering or having a bath every day, sometimes all 4 of us if the kids get a bath as well, we use roughly £4 a day in gas. Electricity is usually around the £2 a day mark and that's with using the tumble dryer, washing machine, gaming PC and general large 3 story house usage.

Our electricity is free next month which I'm very excited about, a reward for being with our provider for 12 months for duel fuel, that'll save us a decent amount over the winter period.
