How much is your gas bill if you have the heating on most of the day?

I know everyone has different rates/size houses but just trying to grasp on average what others pay and their usage.

I have the heating on in the morning from when we get up for 1-2 hours and then in the evening for 2 hours. For gas and electric just doing this and having the tumble drier on once is costing us £6 per day. That is £180 per month for our gas and electric. We live in a 3 bedroom Terrance house. Our rate has just gone up and I know at the minute it's very expensive.

But when I go to other family/friends they seem to have the heating on all day and I don't understand either our rate is very high or are people paying even more and just accepting that is the price to stay warm?

Plus knowing what a non representative sample of other people who's circumstances are likely different to yours pay isn't relevant to your own bills.

Make sure you're on the best available tariff.

Do what you can to reduce usage, put more clothes on, turn things down/off, eliminate drafts, close the curtains, use timers, find out if it's worth investing in energy saving measures or even a new boiler, see if there are any grants available etc etc.

The heating comes on at 5.30am @ 20c during the day I have it @ 18c. It goes back to 20c @ 3pm till 11.

@nannybeach - sorry 6.5p is my gas kwh price. My electric is 21.06kwh - and 5p per kwh (between 0030 and 0400) and we charge the hybrid car up, and i usually do a load of washing in the cheap time. Not sure if it makes much difference or not.

Sorry ScarlettPower,I was also posting on the "how much is your electricity"as well. Presumably you have economy 7 as do I,I use washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer if need be late night early morning, can't access account ATM, but I use 30 to 40% of my electric at cheap rate. Oh also hob and oven,so always batch cook, overnight slo cooker now, soups and casseroles. Gas on all day usually the quarter ending in March £60 a month

We have signed up for solar panels, just waiting for the site survey,as it appears the gas boilers will be banned. I was berated on a different site for saying what would happen if we lost electricity, was told I was being ridiculous and that people with electric cars would just "go somewhere else" to charge them, but look what happened in the recent storm!

My deal with edf just ended and now on standard variable as its so much cheaper than a fixed deal. Gas is around 4.3p kwh.

I only have boiler on for 30min to heat water in the morning and one hour to heat house in afternoon. Rest of the time im layered upand use an electric blanket.

I'm mid terrace 3 bed house.

I'm averaging £2 a day on gas and electric wfh.

I'm lucky in that my neighbours must have their heating on a lot because it must be warming up mine since I wake up and the air isn't cold at all like I think it should be.

I put a wool underlay and wool carpet in my lounge as the floor is concrete and noticed how thats made a huge difference to retaining heat in the room hence I get away with only 1hr heating in the afternoon as it stays warm all evening.

Have you checked the EPC rating of your house?

ivykaty44 · 06/12/2021 21:04

I pay 3.76p per unit and 23.85p per day standing charge

I have my heating on for 1 hour in the morning and 2.30hours in the evening at 18 degrees

weekends it gets put on a bit more if cold

476.32kWh units last week = £19.33
317.54 kWh units the week before = £13.61
254.04kWh units 11th-17th = £11.21
317.54kWh units 3rd-10th = £13.85

it gets left on 16degrees if its going to be cold at night, otherwise its automatically set at 15 degrees to kick in at night

I give weekly readings, that way the utility company can't walk my direct debit up, as it really clear how much Im actually using

its a 3 bed open plan house, cavity insulation, attic insulation and double glazing

I learnt the difficult way- I bought my first house about 2.5 years ago- last year my Gas was averaging £9-£10 a day “no gas cooker”

I had my elderly mother living with me who always wanted the house very warm- I used to put the heating on one of the highest temps- I think because of that the system was always working hard trying to get to a high temp.

this year I have set the temp low at 19 which is actually perfect for me. It doesn’t get turned off- set to 19 , 24/7

just checked my usage for last 10 days and it wad £30, so has been costing about £3 per day 😁

Last year it was £450 a month and we weren’t covering it 😭 had a couple of grand debt by springtime.
