Free masks ? Or v low cost

asdissues · 05/12/2021 15:31

Is there a scheme where low income families can get free or low price masks ?

Are disposable one use ones better or are cotton reusable ones as good as obviously more cost effective ? But there’s still that initial outlay

the pound shop sells them

asdissues · 05/12/2021 15:40

Poundshop sells reusable ones which just need washing between wears. They often come in packs of 2.

B&M sells boxes of 25 disposable masks for £2.

Some supermarkets give out disposable ones. Asda I think is one.

I'm not low income but my masks are from home bargains I got a pack of 3 for £2. Im not sure what you are getting at but we have been using masks for 18 months almost why do you feel its an issue now ? Fwiw I volunteer with people who are low income they always have a mask (unless exempt)

Slayduggee · 05/12/2021 16:00

I bought a pack of ten disposable masks in B&Q yesterday for 50p

Hodl · 05/12/2021 16:06

Amazon has the disposable ones, box of 50 for around £3. Reusable ones are very easy to make as well.

DS is isolating atm, but in school if the boys forget their mask the school office sells them (blue disposable ones) for £1 each. Nice money spinner there!!

NannyR · 05/12/2021 16:06

In the city where I live, there are always council people and volunteers handing out free masks around the city centre and shopping areas, when masks first became mandatory, the same scheme were also giving out free cloth masks all over the place to anyone who wanted one.

kowari · 05/12/2021 16:06

If you only need one for shopping then you can get by with one. It would be with multiple secondary aged children where it would add up, three each if you wash twice a week (one a day, dry overnight). Though, multipacks of cheap reusable masks are widely available at low cost.

LemonViolet · 05/12/2021 16:09

Our local council provide masks free to people on low income.

Sudden drop in income coupled with the re introduction. For a large family where it’s compulsory again in schools and they school say has to be a fresh mask not the one they’ve worn on the bus etc ….. then they drop one so need a spare…. Shops …. School pick ups now parents have to wear again ….. so we are going through a lot

Just use a few reusable ones, you can give you children a little bag with some freshly washed ones in for later in the day. They shouldn’t need more than three each, they are so easy to wash.

I’d be disgusted if they started giving out free disposable ones all over the place. The waste they are generating is already awful, without adding to it with free schemes.

Is the school going to know if they wore it on the bus? Disposables can also be washed and reused.

No but I don’t want to do the wrong thing

Contact your local council. Ours are giving each resident one mask each of asked for. Worth askin

kowari · 05/12/2021 16:25

How is it the wrong thing? Any virus on the mask from another child on the bus would also be on their clothing.

InvincibleInvisibility · 05/12/2021 16:27

You can wash the disposable ones. Experts have said up to 10 times but we only do it once cos the 2nd wear can be less comfortable

CraftyGin · 05/12/2021 16:29

I got 150 from our local market for £10.

Yes, I can see it from that point of view it’s just they’ve said a fresh new mask for coming in after any form of public transport

I had no idea disposables could be washed I thought they’d just disintegrate but that’s a great tip

Your kids only need one per day. The school really won't know or care whether they wore it on the bus or not.

Yes, was just going to say this. Wash the disposable ones. Less waste too.
