Show me a pic of what you call worn out clothing

Keep it clean. Just curious as to what people view as worn out. I'm just realising what I think is worn out to others maybe viewed as 'still got a lot of life left in it'. I don't want to be wasteful.

My top atm. Can't be bothered to chuck it out cos it's warm.

Don't have a picture, but anything that's beyond mending - large holes and so on - or worn through. I 'downgrade' clothes as they age, so they end up as lounging-round-the-house only wear.

If I no longer want something because I've gone off it or it doesn't fit, but it's still in good condition, it goes to charity.

Smartiepants79 · 03/12/2021 19:07

No photos, but I’ve had jeans where the knees and crotch area have holes rubbed into them. Back pockets ripping away. That I would consider as worn out.
Anything that has life in it but I don’t wear anymore gets donated.

rifling · 03/12/2021 19:16

My jeans always wear away where my thighs rub and you can't really repair it. I sometimes keep holey clothes for wearing round the house though.

Daisy829 · 03/12/2021 19:19

I have a hole in the knee of my jeans which shouldn’t be there but I can’t bring myself to throw them away as I think I can get away with it. I’m probably wrong but I’m going with it.

ISpyCobraKai · 03/12/2021 19:21

The t-shirt I'm currently wearing has several small holes, but I love it, it's comfy and I'm only mooching in the house.

Clymene · 03/12/2021 19:23

Why don't you posts picture of what you consider worn out OP? Probably easier

Thighdentitycrisis · 03/12/2021 19:24

Not sure - sometimes things just become too “shabby” but it needs to be a combination of things; out of shape, holes, faded, stains etc, Something with just moth holes doesn’t necessarily qualify for the charity shop.

wheresmymojo · 03/12/2021 19:24

Holes.

At this point I downgrade them for wearing around the house only.

They have to be practically falling apart to be thrown away.

I do have clear outs of things I don't like anymore but I sell those.

daisypond · 03/12/2021 19:26

Worn out often means holes or a rip to me, but I’ll mend them if I can before I think of throwing the item away.

MsSquiz · 03/12/2021 19:27

So many of my t shirts and comfy jersey vests have the small holes around the belly button area (we called it the belly monster in our house) but the vest are usually worn under shirts and sweaters in the winter or for bed, so they're worn until they become 1 giant hole!

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 03/12/2021 19:28

I’ll still wear stuff with holes in for gardening and mooching around the house if it’s still wearable.

I’ve a jumper with a hole in that I still wear out because it’s on the sleeve and not visible.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/12/2021 19:29

DD came home from school with her legging leg nearly ripped off. I considered them unsalvagable. (Too high up to turn into shorts!)

lljkk · 03/12/2021 19:29

To me worn out is when I literally won't wear it anywhere, any more. Not even to paint my house.

Holes in seat of trousers, holes in socks that catch my toes, very frayed collars & cuffs, holes in boob zones.

Seafog · 03/12/2021 19:33

So thin now that if I do see them up again, they will just split beside it

Seafog · 03/12/2021 19:33

Sew them, not see them upHmm

Caspianberg · 03/12/2021 19:40

I down grade clothes also. So my nice woolen jumper that has hole fixed in elbow several times, is now fixed up but isn’t neat anymore and is bobbly after 10+ years but il keep for gardening or diy jobs so I don’t ruin a nicer top.

SommerTen · 03/12/2021 20:06

I won't be seen dead in worn out clothing sorry so I have no photos to share!
I earn just above min wage but I'd rather buy a new top in the Primark sale for a couple of quid for example than wear a worn out top.
I do mend holes when it's possible but only if it doesn't show.
I hate it when things get bobbly too. I generally shave off the bobbles.

ParishSpinster · 03/12/2021 20:10

When the fabric is actually wearing through. I can mend splits and have experimented in mending the chub rub at the top of my jeans.

EssexLioness · 03/12/2021 20:12

I downgrade worn out clothing too. I buy good quality and take care of my clothes so they don’t tend to wear out too badly. For me it tends to be when a t shirt is stretched out of shape or when an item of clothing is faded badly. Bobbles I remove and the only times I’ve got holes in my clothes is when I’ve bought cheap stuff from primary which I no longer do. I work from home and I think wearing loungewear (ie old clothes) helps keep my proper clothes in good condition. When clothes look too shabby for loungewear then I downgrade further for gardening or decorating clothes, or cut into cleaning rags

dudsville · 03/12/2021 20:27

I had two pairs of pj bottoms that were 15 years old that died this year. They'd faded, but were cotton and the fabric had grown so soft and thin, perfect for summer. The fabric finally split one day in one pair and I knew the other was only days behind.

The tee shirts I wear most often have several holes but not anywhere obvious and I mostly wear them under things ie around home.

My pants aren't elasticated, just a knit binding around the leg and waist holes. They last for years, fading but keeping their shape, which they out to for the price! I've lost one pair in 10 years due to the knit binding coming loose.

Socks with holes in the toe can be mended, but mended holes in the heels I find grates uncomfortably.

Lining in coats usually gives way before the external fabric. But also if there are holes or it loses its water proof capacity, etc.

faithfulbird20 · 03/12/2021 21:37

Do you guys wear this kinda stuff infront of guests, postman, to work (depending on the job)?

Thanks for the pics @Seafog @Forion. Really want more people to post photos so I wear 'out' my clothing a bit more.

@Clymene sorry I quite regularly declutter stuff that physically stresses me out.

@SommerTen I'm like you. I have a few pairs of clothes (absolute bear minimum) will wear the quite regularly and will declutter after 6-8-12 months. I'm a sahm btw so I don't have that many clothes.

I retired a merino winter base layer this week (one that has been used for winter hiking and climbing). It was so threadbare at the back that it ended up ripping a huge hole across the back as I put it on. It already had small holes where my rucksack straps rub it, but those weren't terminal.

Not all of it was threadbare though, so I'm going to cut up the material to make dishcloths.

CSJobseeker · 03/12/2021 21:44

Socks with holes in the toe can be mended, but mended holes in the heels I find grates uncomfortably.

Agree with this. I've never managed to satisfactorily mend a heel.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/12/2021 23:41

Fabric badly bobbled and looking tired.
Fabric worn away.
Generally stained/ marked so never looks clean.

I can fix buttons and hems, but some seams and going threadbare, I can't do much about. Often though, by the time something needs a repair, the general condition isn't worth it.

Some things get relegated. I've got a thin, light down jacket that's generally marked, cuffs are looking battered and the flap under the zip has snagged showing the lining. Not smart for every day use (now replaced) but functional for cold weather exercise.

My DIY jeans had to be binned after fitting my backside in and zipping up the flies became a moot point Grin
With the amount of paint on them, they were getting beyond donating for rag.
