Chicken Kiev. Your favourite brand and how do you cook it ?

I'm fortunate enough to live near a branch of Booth's and their CKs have been my preferred choice for several years, although I'm sure they're smaller than they used to be. I admit I never buy them at full price. Otherwise, the Morrison's ones at about £3.35 for two were almost as good. Very buttery and garlicky. I haven't seen them locally recently.

I always oven-cook them but I remember the likes of Berni and Cavalier Steak Bars used to deep-fry them. As if they weren't unhealthy enough!

My old man used to like the cheese and ham variety, a.k.a. chicken cordon bleu. In my experience, these ended up utterly overcooked or with the filling leaking! Nice when neither happened.

M&S is the best one. We have it with tomato sauce gnocchi with mozzarella grilled on top and a side of greens.

Put a slice on bread underneath the Kiev. When the butter starts oozing out you have a lovely garlicky crouton. Mmmmm.

I'm with you on booths but also refuse to pay full price! I tend to get the Sainsbury's ones if not booths.

idontlikealdi · 02/12/2021 20:24

Unfortunately down south and no Booths. If I'm having Kiev I want an actual chicken breast, not reconstituted stuff. They're not cheap though, I tend to go to M&S just because it's near, think it's £6ish for two

WildRosie · 02/12/2021 20:37

I've yet to try the M&S variety. As long as they're more expensive than Booth's I probably won't.

I seem to recall that CK didn't always contain garlic. I wonder if it's a British invention, a bit like tikka masala ?

Are Bernard Matthews mini kievs still available ? I used to like those but I don't suppose they were very authentic.

@iklboodolphrednosedpaindear mmm... great idea. I'm put off CKs by the loss of filling, so disappointing to cut into it and find an empty hollow. Shall do the bread trick from now on.
I've always liked the creamy garlic above the buttery ones but haven't had in years. Adding them to shopping list right now...

I had a childhood flashback when I saw them in Iceland, they're not as good as I remember.

I've gone off kievs, can never find a decent one that goes crispy enough and taste good.

Wagsandclaws · 02/12/2021 20:42

And other vote for the m and s ones - bloody divine!

I had this for dinner tonight with parminter potatoes and roasted honey carrots. The chicken is actual chicken on the bone.

haven't found another comparable chicken Kiev.

MatildaIThink · 02/12/2021 20:42

Not a brand but the recipe below, give them a go, not difficult and really delicious! Sometimes I out in extra garlic as well.

Aldi posh ones in sourdough crumbs are very good.

^I agree, the M&S one is really nice. Don’t rate Morrison ones at all

WildRosie · 02/12/2021 21:04

My local butcher sell their own CKs. I've had them once but I was a little disappointed by the lack of buttery garlickness. Basically a chicken fillet in yellow breadcrumbs. On the plus side, they do a splendid fillet stuffed with either sausage meat or sage and onion and wrapped in bacon and breadcrumbs. They are first class. My late parents used to like them.

Aldi cheap garlic ones - frozen not fresh are our choice.

Probably closer to the Bernard Matthews ones you remember than others but they are really nice.

You, my friend, are a genius!
ScouseQueen · 02/12/2021 21:12

Another vote for the M&S ones. So good.

They are bloody spectacular.

GoodnightGrandma · 02/12/2021 21:15

I used to like the Tesco ones with cheese and ham in the middle.
Why do they always stop doing the good things ?

Oblomov21 · 02/12/2021 21:15

Chicken Kiev is my fave. But I'm struggling to find one I like atm.

Totallydefeated · 02/12/2021 21:15

Came on to say M&S too!

If I can’t get them, Waitrose are my second choice. Don’t bother with Tesco, they’re dry and cardboardy.

GoodnightGrandma · 02/12/2021 21:15

The posh ones in Tesco are nice.

WildRosie · 02/12/2021 21:16

My Booth's number tonight leaked a little garlic butter but not enough for an impromptu crouton. I think I may have overcooked it.

If you check the ingredients they are identical to M&S. Pretty sure it's the same ;)
WildRosie · 02/12/2021 21:31

Does anybody deep-fry CK ? I don't as I don't have the means but it's an interesting idea.

OP posts:
NalPolishRemover · 02/12/2021 21:40

We love the Aldi chicken breast ones. Or sometimes m&s
I don't like the reconstituted chicken ones at all.
If you want to make them yourself I can highly recommend the hairy bikers recipe - it's a bit of a faff but they're really delicious
