A day out in Yorkshire… What would you do? With kids!!

I’m last minute driving from Kendal to Hull tomorrow and looking to stop somewhere for the day…. Don’t need to be in Hull until tea time and I’ll be spending the weekend there.

Thinking Leeds or York way, but not overly fussed on a city visit with an 8yr old and 12yr old. Don’t want to go shopping!!!

Happy outdoors/indoors, museums/activities.

Ideas would be great!! Thanks

The railway museum in York is also really good! And I'm pretty sure it is free 🧐

totorostoes · 02/12/2021 21:28

Eureka in Halifax if that’s not too much of a diversion

Leeds has the city museum and royal armouries that are both free

York there’s the railway museum

Other ideas flamingoland, Eden camp, yorkshire sculpture park, yorkshire wildlife park, tropical world, harewood house, thorp Perrow, stump cross caverns

@Hellocatshome

York is good but will be very busy. I think I would go straight to Hull and go to The Deep.
We’re in Hull all weekend. Can do the deep then. But we’ve been there loads!

So would I. Unless you leave Kendal very early it isn't really worth stopping off en route to visit somewhere very interesting unless you don't expect to get to Hull until very late.

That’s the plan!

@bbn81

Slightly depends on your route. If travelling down the M6 and then M62 I would stop somewhere in the leeds/wakefield area. Temple Newsam is nice as is Lotherton Hall.
Can go either way, once I’ve figured out what to do!

Was thinking of York dungeons but ds12 isn’t keen.

Thanks for all the ideas! I’ve narrowed it down to…

York: Dungeons, Jorvic or Castle Museum. I’m secretly wanting to go to one of these as there’s a Harry Potter shop in York!… But out off by people saying York is crazy busy at the moment!

Leeds: The armouries is free!! But my dh says it’s boring!

Forbidden Corner, slightly more North than I wanted, but I’ve been keen to go there for ages! I think the kids will like it too!! Outdoors doesn’t bother us, I work outdoors soo know how to stay warm and dry.

In Leeds there is Tropical World which is next to Roundhay Park. We have stopped off there when on the way elsewhere, and we have been able to park in a car park near one of the Roundhay Park playgrounds & walk up to Tropical World. It's indoors, and warm!

MsWalterMitty · 02/12/2021 22:47

Forbidden corner is closed, so rules that one out!

We went to flamingo land last year, was good but too soon to do it again.

The Stockeld deer park looks good but fully booked!

Like I’ve already said, I’m in Hull all weekend, so can go to those places either on the weekend. Or when I visit the in-laws again in the future.

I just happen to have a bonus day of work tomorrow, so instead of driving over at 5pm straight to Hull, I now have all day to make my way over there….So wanted to do something new!

What would a pre-teen boy who’s showing signs of disinterest in everything be in to out of my list?! Thanks!

Forbidden corner is only open by prebooking, and only open on Sundays in the winter. Then closed completely in jan/feb/Mar if I remember correctly. Lots of issues with locals and access?

The Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds would probably fit the bill. There is on site parking as well.

God I hated forbidden corner and that was in spring when it wasn’t freezing

Oh no! I’ve heard it’s good but over priced for what it is!

It depends if you’re happy being cold and damp running around a weird castle having an ‘adventure’. Mine were little though so it was a bit stressful trying to keep an eye on them. I might also be a bit of a kill joy as well Grin

Go ape at templenewsam is good.

MsWalterMitty · 03/12/2021 18:06

Oh no! There's loads of them, all at one of the shambles. The original one is The Shop That Cannot Be Named but there's about four now I think.

Now you have a good excuse to go back!

lanbro · 03/12/2021 18:45

Came on to suggest Forbidden Corner, best on a dry day though

Ah that’s what it’s called!! 😀… Yeah wish I’d gone now! But to make up for it I’m off to the Forbidden Forest in Cheshire next week 😀😀

Yep, I really need to do a day there! It’s about an hour and a half from my house, so will just drive over for the day in the summer
