Should I book a weekend in London?

DC don't really need stuff this Christmas so we hit on the idea of booking a few nights in London, shows etc. In light of the Covid would this really be wise?

Meant to say thinking if February.

We just booked the 17th and the 18th of this month.
Do hope other people stay away though, as it will be less crowded.

TheGonnagle · 01/12/2021 22:03

We’re going to London over NYE. Fingers crossed…

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 22:05

@Mybalconyiscracking that reminds me of my mum who came to do Christmas lights and see us in London last week. She was all in a tizz that other people were doing exactly the same thing as her, making it ‘dangerously crowded’ Hmm

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/12/2021 22:15

Well I would, if you are vaccinated, wear masks and distance when you can. Gotta live life,

Davros · 02/12/2021 00:12

We went into Town last night. It looks so fabulous with Xmas lights everywhere and it wasn't even December! By one day...

Bouledeneige · 02/12/2021 00:38

I can't think why not. It's a buzzy city with lots going on. No one had suggested the Omicron variant is as prevalent or lethal as flu so unless you're unusuallly susceptible to flu why would you worry?

Unless you're normally just afraid of cities?

70sDuvet · 02/12/2021 06:05

Aside from covid..

Santa has brought this twice to DS (now 8) a trip to London, lots of museums and a few shows and they were his BEST PRESENTS EVER
(Hes a very lucky boy with lots of older cousins hand me downs so never needs stuff)
If you decide to do it, memories last much longer than this years gadget

We really wanted to do it again this year but other family pressures are in the way.

If your kids are old enough to understand could it be a voucher with no set date..... travel lodges (prob lots of others too) let you book (for a bit more) with a cancellation option until 24 hours before.

I'm not sure how theatres are working now but either try for tickets closer to the time or of they were to shut again (highly unlikely) you would get your ticket transfered to another date of your choosing.

MinnieMountain · 02/12/2021 06:20

I’d get it booked. Shows are still selling well.

As PP have said, you can’t not do things forever.

DH and I have ballet in Birmingham booked for February.

Bagelsandbrie · 02/12/2021 06:21

We are thinking of doing this but I think it’s better to just literally either go on the day and do the touristy things (museums etc) or try not to book too far ahead- none of us know what’s going to happen with restrictions etc at the moment and I don’t fancy trying to rebook things or get my money back for shows.

Bagelsandbrie · 02/12/2021 06:21

(By go on the day I mean don’t book tickets etc in advance, I appreciate that can make it more expensive though).

Yeah please come to London, but just you and 1 friend. I mean, we don't want too many people do we??
MsTSwift · 02/12/2021 06:38

Sorry to disappoint you but seems people aren’t staying away all the central premier inns we normally stay in booked solid. Got two nights in shoreditch should be cool with teens booked a show and the Sky Garden and RA winter exhibition all had tickets albeit not many.

We do pre Xmas trip most years city so beautiful

🤣🤣

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/12/2021 07:28

Yes, book it. If it gets cancelled it gets cancelled. February is a while away.

Nitgel · 02/12/2021 07:36

Poaters coming in Dec, be wary that there are tube strikes 18 dec. Hopefully they will call off.

@Nitgel oh bugger! Really?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/12/2021 07:42

oh i would

AuntieMarys · 02/12/2021 07:46

We are off today for a few days...have been 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Great atmosphere....been to theatre 3 times, 2 gigs and one tonight.

Nitgel · 02/12/2021 07:52

Night strikes planned too tfl.gov.uk/campaign/tube-strike?cid=tube-strike#on-this-page-1

You can always walk around though, if you are central you can walk most places or get buses

Helpstopthepain · 02/12/2021 07:55

Thanks @Nitgel we don’t mind walking but staying just outside so need to see where we can get to. I’ll take my trainers!

TeeBee · 02/12/2021 08:20

The strokes are reduced services on four lines, not all out strikes.

halloweenie13 · 02/12/2021 08:27

I live in London and to all those looking to book over the next few months I would just avoid (especially at NYE) there are no fireworks or significant events this year and in fact there are suggestions people avoid London altogether. It is overcrowded here, cases rising and difficult to get to work or other necessities with the ongoing tube issues.
My own family cancelled their trip down to see me and given I work majorately online instead I am travelling back up north for nearly a month from December 20th. Avoid London honestly.

MsTSwift · 02/12/2021 08:30

Not taking that advice sorry! London is fab pre Christmas can’t wait. Missed out our pre Christmas trip last year not missing it this year. Used to live there so shaping to walk / bus / bike
