Things that have increased in price over the pandemic

Which I realise also incorporates Brexit

Things have noticed:

  • Beer now seems to be £6 or £6.5 in many pubs in London and the SE. About £4.50/£5 in the same places before. Yes I know I don't need to buy beer.
  • My haircut that used to cost £40 is now £53. Yes I know I could get it cheaper elsewhere but similar relative increases have been seen everywhere
  • I just phoned to make a hygienist appointment. £50 before, now £89 and payable in advance! I suppose I don't "need" to do that either but the dentist says I do.
  • "Cheap" petrol £1.47

I know that there's been a gradual creep on all sorts of things, but which have stuck you most?

Apples!

£2.19 for a six pack of pink ladies, even in Aldi.

languagelover96 · 29/11/2021 11:24

Hotel room prices

Colinthedaxi · 29/11/2021 11:25

Houses, horses and dogs!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 29/11/2021 11:26

Err, everything.

mewkins · 29/11/2021 11:26

Fuel is ridiculously high. Drinking put is now eye watering! Though I find bottles of booze in supermarkets haven't really increased.

mewkins · 29/11/2021 11:27

*out

Porridgeislife · 29/11/2021 11:27

Outdoor furniture. Our setting has doubled in price since we bought it in 2018, from £800 to £1700.

Claudethecat · 29/11/2021 11:28

Coffee. I used to buy a two pack of Lavazza for a fiver. It is now £6.20. That might just be in Sainsburys though.

Blackmagicqueen · 29/11/2021 11:29

Haircuts

Blackmagicqueen · 29/11/2021 11:31

Sorry just realised you already said that op!
I've noticed not as many 3 for 2 or 2 for a certain price deals on anymore especially in asda which is now so expensive!

Freshprincess · 29/11/2021 11:35

Petrol, gas and electricity are the big ones for me.

I’ve also been looking at train fares for a few Christmas days out and they seem to be more expensive than a couple of years ago.

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/11/2021 11:36

Clothes.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 29/11/2021 11:47

Hair cut £32 to £38
Eating out, particularly drinks
My house.

user0176 · 29/11/2021 11:58

It would be easier to ask what has stayed the same or gotten cheaper. Inflation has increased, most things are now more expensive.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 29/11/2021 12:07

Timber!

midsomermurderess · 29/11/2021 12:55

Basics like milk no butter. A standard tub of Lurpack is now £4. One day in a little Sainsburys near me in the summer a woman in front of me was almost spluttering over it, '£4, £4? When did this happen, how is it so expensive?' She wasn't having a go at the cashier, I think she couldn't contain her astonishment.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 29/11/2021 13:52

Building supplies. We paid £950 this month to have a room plastered. The year before lockdown we did a room for £500.

BackBackBack · 29/11/2021 14:00

The brand of dry dog food I buy has rocketed just in the last few weeks. I bought two sacks in September at £40 each - now reordering and they are £55 each.

Thegreencup · 29/11/2021 14:04

Everything. What I'm noticing is that less places have deals or offers. Or 40% off this year is still what was full price last year. Now they are just trying to recoupe as much money as they physically can.

parentingperson · 29/11/2021 14:05

@WowIlikereallyhateyou

Err, everything.

This

cars - new and second hand

FYI , my DB is an electrician - and all his material prices have gone up.

I have relatives who run a hospitality supply business - they import a lot from far east - The price to ship a container used to be $3k now its $12K - that the shipping cost only - doesn't include the contents which are up a well.

DraigFach · 29/11/2021 14:14

Food and fuel. Our tastes aren't expensive but we've had to increase the food budget by £75 a month and we only just squeak in on the increase.

I'm now driving everywhere 60mph or less depending on speed limit to try and get as many miles as possible from a tank of petrol and at home add a layer is the first response to feeling cold.

Our outgoings have gone up by over £300 a month in the last year...but wages definitely haven't! We're getting close to pay only covering the essentials which is very worrying.

35andThriving · 29/11/2021 14:57

Toilet rolls have gone up in price. Most things have gone up, actually. I have also noticed in Tesco that a lot of their cheaper alternatives have just been removed from their shop range completely... so it's either buy the expensive version or just don't have it at all.

MintJulia · 29/11/2021 15:11

Petrol and diesel. Most other things are up slightly if at all.

mum2jakie · 05/12/2021 10:52

Pretty much everything, especially food!
