Do you buy expensive coats?

Does everyone own a Rab/NorthFace/Montane coat nowadays?

I just find them expensive and too warm.

I went for a walk with friends yesterday, forest, hilly, fresh. They were in their super puffy down jackets, branded woolly hats and Buffs, and im in my Millets, generic cheap thinner down jacket (which i love) and a North Ridge fleecy lined top sweating my bollocks off🥵🥵

I’ve borrowed a thick puffy branded one off said friend and i found it too chunky and too hot.

Do you wear them or go for cheaper versions?

Regatta till I die Grin

I’m wearing a jacket my husband was given by an old employer for dog walks at the moment. I’ve looked at the expensive brands and can’t bring myself to spend that much. I bought myself Me + Em winter coat for non-country walks - shopping, going out with friends, going to the theatre etc.

lanbro · 28/11/2021 08:19

I have a Rab but I do get hot in in doing exercise although great for standing around on the school run. I'm a body warmer fan - have a couple of North Face ones which keep me warm but not hot, obviously no good in the rain though unless you wear a thin waterproof over the top

I like / need something decent, but don't pay over the odds. My light jacket is a quilted Barber and my big coat is a Craghoppers, so not expensive especially but not cheap. Both bought in sales I add!

Flaunch · 28/11/2021 08:19

I’ve got coats that cost £150 and coats that coat £12. The one I wear most is the £12 lidl one 😂

Mabelface · 28/11/2021 08:22

Got a zara parka and a dkny long coat. They cost me £20 and £8 respectively from charity shops, both new.

Firesidefox · 28/11/2021 08:23

I have an expensive boiled wool coat from Harrison Wharf but it doesn't have any identifying label to show that, it's just really well cut.

I hate those Canada Goose coats that everyone has nowadays. I have a cheap long puffa for walking the dog and it's so warm and nice.

Camomila · 28/11/2021 08:24

I have an extensiveish cost (€200ish), but it was a 30th birthday present from my auntie. I really like it as its warm enough for when we go to Italy/when there's snow here. It's nice and cosy for the morning school run.

I'm not sure I'd buy such an expensive coat with my own money though!

DinosApple · 28/11/2021 08:27

I'd love a too warm coat, but I've looked at the likes of Rab and they are too expensive for my budget.

I have a Peter Storm coat (about £50) and it's pretty good. I'd have to layer up more when it gets really cold though, I stand about in the cold a lot!

StEval · 28/11/2021 08:27

I prefer to buy Jack Wolfskin, Merrell or Didrikson.
Sorry Op but cheap coats simply dont have the windproof details and style.
Iive got a Merrell thats light but windproof, waterproof and breathable, now 10 years old and in perfect condition.

I think thats your problem -cheap, sweaty coat 😬

icedcoffees · 28/11/2021 08:28

I work outdoors and find fleece and down to be incredibly sweaty as they're not breathable.

Natural layers underneath any kind of breathable jacket works best for me - I love merino base layers and then opt for a waterproof outer layer as it helps protect against the wind too.

icedcoffees · 28/11/2021 08:29

And I would also add that many cheap jackets are poor quality and not great for
prolonged periods outdoors.

Imissmoominmama · 28/11/2021 08:30

I have a Rab microlight and a paramo for walks. I wear merino layers and don’t get too hot.

gunnersgold · 28/11/2021 08:32

I've got two rab coats , I have worn thr first one to death . If you don't like them or can't afford them don't buy one ! 🤷‍♀️.. I love coats and have about 20 .. 🙈

badlydrawnbear · 28/11/2021 08:35

I have a North Face coat, one of those that’s a waterproof jacket with a fleece bit that zips in and out so it’s suitable for all year round. DH bought it me for Christmas when DC1 was in Reception and I was fed up of getting soaked to the skin walking to and from school. DC1 is now in year 6 and the coat is still good. I don’t know how it compares to a cheaper version from Mountain Warehouse or somewhere though. I was shocked when I discovered years later how much North Face coats are.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 28/11/2021 08:38

My absolute favourite "smart coat" is a 100% wool orange one from Hobbs. I love it so much, it's super cosy and very elegant. I think full price it was about £150.

Except I bought it, still with the tags on, from a charity shop for £20.

PickAChew · 28/11/2021 08:39

I have a barbour coastal parka which is flattering, windproof and waterproof and not too warm.

Minceandonions · 28/11/2021 08:40

Yes I own a Rab. It keeps me really warm on winter hikes, but is also a great option for wearing over a t-shirt on a summer evening when it starts to get chilly.
I don't care about brands, but I hate shopping so just buy what my husband tells me to buy and hes BIG on research!

QueenofLouisiana · 28/11/2021 08:48

I bought a Didrikson which was amazing, lasted 8 years of rugby, playground duty and dog walking. It was well worth the money.

Currently, I have a jaeger parker which I bought in an outlet. It was half price.

MinnieMountain · 28/11/2021 08:54

I have a Didriksons puffer because I find most brands don’t have long enough sleeves. I used it for the first time this season on Friday and I love it.

I do have a Mountain Warehouse men’s puffer that I bought before discovering Didriksons. It’s relegated to mucky bike rides only now.

MrsDThomas · 28/11/2021 09:00

Its just my body being warm enough then.

As i said, I borrowed a puffy NorthFace one and found it too thick and hot.

I buy expensive coats, jeans and boots / trainers. I find that for these three things the money spent it worth it for the better quality and the things lasting longer. So overall I don't feel it is more expensive as they need replacing so rarely.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 28/11/2021 09:14

We're a none car household so decent waterproofs are a must...... Nothing too OTT. Just Berghaus, theyve all stood the test of time and have a removable fleece. I think mine was £140 about 10 years ago......its never needed reproofing and is immaculate despite being worn constantly

My other coat is a parka I got from Asda for £28.

hidinginquote · 28/11/2021 09:25

I do tend to buy more expensive coats especially for winter because I walk an awful lot and hate being cold, but I don't like things that have branding on them so this year I hunted far and wide for a full length black puffer that was down and wind and waterproof with no/little branding on it, but I wanted something actually warm and would last for years, I found a Canadian brand and got it shipped and paid way too much import tax on it but I love it, the arms are long enough which I always have issue with and it's so warm. In all it was about £300. But I rarely spend money on other clothes.

Username0981237645021 · 28/11/2021 09:26

My winterys day coat is an expensive RRP one from the mountain warehouse sale so didn't really cost much more than a bogstandard primark or wherever coat not the most attractive but it's lovely and warm and somehow just keeps me the right side of warm as I do sweat easily too.
