Do you buy expensive coats?

Does everyone own a Rab/NorthFace/Montane coat nowadays?

I just find them expensive and too warm.

I went for a walk with friends yesterday, forest, hilly, fresh. They were in their super puffy down jackets, branded woolly hats and Buffs, and im in my Millets, generic cheap thinner down jacket (which i love) and a North Ridge fleecy lined top sweating my bollocks off🥵🥵

I’ve borrowed a thick puffy branded one off said friend and i found it too chunky and too hot.

Do you wear them or go for cheaper versions?

I’ve got a decent waterproof which can cope with proper rain and keeps the wind off. Underneath I just wear layers of not particularly expensive stuff.

Unless the weather is really freezing or I know I’m going to be standing around, if I’m out for a walk my issue is getting too hot not cold. I liked the idea of those puffy jackets but the ones I’ve seen mostly aren’t waterproof and I think will be too warm for a walk. Playground duty is another matter altogether.

I love Save the Duck coats, I have 4 of different lengths and thicknesses, all really nice. I bought a Superdry coat a few days ago which feels nice but haven’t worn it outside yet.

I have a range of down jackets.

Fairly lightweight 850 fill LLBean jacket for chucking on and quick local dog walks.

Longer, fancier, lightweight down fill jacket for wearing over smarter clothes - think it's from Eddie Bauer.

Longer much heavier weight Lands End coat for when it's -25 and windy and the dog still needs walking (I also have a fur lined aviator hat and some really warm down-filled ski gloves for those days).

About $150 each from outlets.

I also have two down filled gilets, and two ski jackets, all also from outlets or bought in sales.

Plus three pairs of snow boots, one of which has retractable spikes, as well as two pairs of waterproof warm ankle boots with soles that work on ice.

Two pairs of snowshoes. I should really get rid of one of them.

Don't get me started on how many different warmth hats and gloves I have...

I very much dislike getting cold. I also dislike getting sweaty when I'm walking.

Got an M&S padded coat and a Paramo fleece. I'll take the Paramo every time and suffer being rained/hailed/snowed on as it's so much warmer.

@MrsDThomas

Im asking why people wear big puffy coats for walking/hiking.

I borrowed one for a 2 mile dog walk, that is not a “walk” for me, but i got super hot in it.

Because big puffy coats are designed to keep you warm when you are but moving. That’s what climbers/mountaineers use them for - for when you stop for a break, at camp, or belaying (holding the rope). For hill walking you want layers.

CuriousMariette that’s me currently I get boiling. We went for a walk across the fields and in the local wood yesterday. It started snowing and was really a bit of a blizzard. Because I had a hot flush I had to undo my coat. Last week I was walking around in a t.shirt.

I have a great hiking jacket that I bought in America on holiday about 25 years ago. I would say op that the puffa jackets on Snowden aren’t experienced hill walkers and are just ticking Snowden off their to do list.

Hate those cruel down coats. I also hate Barbour they just look so posh old fogey. Not a fan of Rab either.
I like all saints and Belstaff.
Cheap coats aren't often waterproof.
