If all the heating in your house was switched off, how cold would it get?

Our spare room is down to 9.9 degrees!

@ZZTopGuitarSolo

Ahh your houses are all so warm :-)

When we lose power in winter I keep the woodstove burning constantly and I keep a thermometer in the downstairs room that's furthest away. My goal is to keep it above 0C. I usually just about manage but I have to wake up every 3 hours to refuel the stove.

Without a heat source of some kind my house goes below freezing within about 24-36 hours on a typical winter day here.

We now have a generator so as long as we can get petrol we're OK. In a power cut here you can queue for hours for petrol though...

Wow where are you?
Herhereherhere · 27/11/2021 23:31

Our heating has been for one day this autumn about 3 weeks ago. Otherwise it is off all day and night. House is currently 18.8 and may drop to 18 overnight. If there is some sun tomorrow we should avoid the heating on, but otherwise it will go on for a few hours tomorrow again I think. House temperature is very driven by the amount of sunlight though, not outside temperature so can get up to 23/24 on a sunny, but cold day.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 27/11/2021 23:49

colditalianpizza I'm in Maine. Not helped by having a long house that has nowhere near enough baseboards for providing heat even when the power is on. My house is well insulated upstairs but not great downstairs (built during different decades).

AutumnAnn · 27/11/2021 23:49

We get around 11.5°c in our bathroom and that's with the heating on. When we first moved in the property had been empty for a while and it was below 10°c in here, took about 3 days to warm the place up. Our living room is usually around the 15°c mark if the heating has been off all day, this time of year we have it on all the time to keep the place warm

amsadandconfused · 27/11/2021 23:55

I just keep the heating on at 18 degrees.

Whitefire · 27/11/2021 23:56

My MIL had no central heating, it never really got much below 10 degs, the house was a mid terrace so that probably helped. The 'scullery' was always pretty cold but that was off the back of the kitchen.

Smokeahontas · 27/11/2021 23:58

I’m in exactly the same position as @PillowySoft was. Moved house a few months ago, boiler died last week. Currently staying with parents as the house is unbearably cold. Oil filled radiators are ok during the day, but by 6pm it’s an ice box.

gofg · 27/11/2021 23:59

I don't know, but I live in a country where central heating is rare and the majority of houses don't have double glazing, so it would be pretty cold. Many of us only heat the living areas and the rest of the house is like a fridge in winter. However, now and again the electricity has gone (snow usually) and I've coped!

gofg · 28/11/2021 00:00

So, thinking about it, once I go to bed all the heating in my house is switched off!

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 00:07

I'm strictly limiting how long I have it on for given the rise in energy prices. Two hours a day maximum.

I'm oop North.

The answer to your question - fucking freezing Sad.

Varies from room to room but cold. Ice on the inside of back bedrooms and able to see your breath. I've woken up with a headache this last week or so because of the temp dipping so low during the night. Ours is an old, open plan draughty building out in the sticks which cooks in summer and is a walk in freezer in winter. We have open coal fires downstairs which once lit get the house roasting in no time but without any heating at all we'd all be like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

FrangipaniBlue · 28/11/2021 00:08

The heating has been on at 25c today and I'm just about warm again.

WHAAAAATTTT??????

This thread is blowing my mind...... people saying their houses get down to 14/15 with no heating on - that's what I have my heating set at Confused

Mine gets down to about 9/10 with no heating on

Ha ha, yes. I've got a huge woolly cardi I put on over my normal jumper or cardi, leggings, fluffy socks and about seven blankets strategically located around the house.

PigletJohn · 28/11/2021 00:32

South coast here.

It would take several days for the fabric of the house to cool down, but probably about 10C

In frosty weather, around 5C indoors but below freezing in the loft, at night. Hence pipe lagging. And an anti-frost heater in the garage under the incoming water pipes. I must remember to check it tomorrow.

There is solar gain through the windows when the sun shines.

thatonesmine · 28/11/2021 00:33

We never have the heating on overnight as we like to sleep in coolth. It went off a couple of hours ago and the front room, warmest room in the house, is a reasonably balmy 19. The kitchen however, coldest room, is now 10 and will be much colder by morning. No idea why it gets so cold in there it's double glazed and has a decent sized radiator for the space, no obvious draughts, just fucking nithering. South Yorkshire

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 00:36

It's surprising how much difference (for the cost of boiling a kettle once) a hot water bottle can make. Mine is in a fluffy cover and stays warm for hours.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 00:50

Slightly tangental but Christmas Day is going to be just me and DH for the second year running and I was mulling over things we could do to make it feel special, and thought 'I'll put the central heating on all day !'

That's a wee bit sad, isn't it? 😂

I heat up our house just by cooking. Only time the kitchen is actually used for proper cooking so I branch out and let the doors stay open give the rest a house a treat.
FatFilledTrottyPuss · 28/11/2021 00:58

@bigbluebus

Our electricity - and therefore our heating- has been off since 10pm last night. It is currently 15.3 in our kitchen although DH did cook a chicken stew for a few hours on the hob. Not sure what the temperature is upstairs but it is much colder especially in our 2 North facing bedrooms. I've just got hot water bottles and sleeping bags out ready for tonight. Latest estimate for power to be restored is 8pm tomorrow. Temperature outside is currently -1c and going down to -4c later on.
Oh my god I wonder if you live near me. Our power has been off since 10pm Friday too and it’s bloody freezing. We’ve got no idea when it’s due to go back on. ‘The team is on its way’ apparently and I’m bloody freezing 🥶 North Cumbria by the way. 🥶🥶🥶
ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 01:00

I heat up our house just by cooking

Our kitchen-diner is always nice and warm after the goose has been roasting for four hours. Unfortunately the layout of the house means it doesn't penetrate to the living room, so without heating, retiring at 3 to watch the Queen's Speech is like plunging into the arctic.

YourWinter · 28/11/2021 01:02

It was 10° in here when I got home at 10pm, it's 9.9° now and the dog and I are off to bed with a hot water bottle, the dog has her fleece on. I have a 10.5 tog down duvet with a wool throw on top.

I haven't had the heating on yet, will leave that until there's a real risk of pipes freezing. I might light the fire tomorrow night but usually comfortable enough with sheepskin slippers and an extra jumper, and a blanket, dog and/or a cat on my lap.

I have to admit, posts like this irritate me. You really can’t conceive, to the point where it ‘blows your mind’, that people like their houses at different temperatures? The majority of people wouldn’t wait until their house got to 14/15 to turn their heating on. It’s akin to competitive under eating posts.
Kippersfortea · 28/11/2021 01:16

My thermostat has been under 5 every time I've turned the heating off for more than an hour this week. My house is drafty and poorly insulated though, so it's basically a glorified shed at this point
