If all the heating in your house was switched off, how cold would it get?

Our spare room is down to 9.9 degrees!

14 or 15. But don’t get me started on the flippin conservatory we thought was a good idea when buying this house 🙁

WillYouDoTheFandango · 27/11/2021 22:30

When we got back from holiday at the start of November the house was 11 degrees. The house is a 60s semi but it has dormers with flat roofs and huge windows.

I think if left to it’s own devices it would get very cold very quickly over the winter.

FuckYouCorona · 27/11/2021 22:30

Probably not below 18 as we're in a new build.

SarahAndQuack · 27/11/2021 22:31

When we first moved into our house it had been empty for some time and was very damp, and it was registering between 5 and 9 degrees in March (we had a monitor because DD was a baby). Now it has dried out and we've done some work I sincerely hope it wouldn't get that cold again! We played chicken with the heating oil last year and had a few days without, and I think it was around 14-16, which is quite cold enough!

When I was younger I lived in a flat that had no central heating at all, and only a very small gas fire that had been condemned. Ice froze in thick sheets on the insides of the windows and it felt much colder than this house ever has.

purplesequins · 27/11/2021 22:31

it will be a cold night tonight.
when our heating failed last winter our home got down to 13 degrees.
luckily the boiler repair was possible next day.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 27/11/2021 22:32

Just above 9 degrees in our hall this week when the heating is off!

essaytwenty · 27/11/2021 22:38

Eventually, it will equal whatever the temperature outside. Slightly warmer if we are still occupying it. Unlikely in winter.

INeedNewShoes · 27/11/2021 22:38

Our house is well insulated so retains warmth for quite some time and would only go down to 15-16 overnight.

Coldest the Gro egg has measured is 9 degrees which was when we'd been away for a few days (leaving the heating thermostat at 5+ degrees to prevent pipes freezing.

Titsywoo · 27/11/2021 22:42

Our house is very well insulated and hasn't yet gone below 18 with no heating on. We did a lot of refurb in the last 5 years and the extension and loft conversion have huge amounts of insulation as building regs demand a lot nowadays.

VaguelyInteresting · 27/11/2021 22:42

When I lived in an off grid home, the coldest it ever got when we had a thermometer (post baby) was 6 degrees overnight - we used a wood burner and a diesel stove and used to turn on the diesel stove for an hour in the night, but it dropped unexpectedly...

It’s actually been colder in the house we then moved into - high ceilinged 300 year old house alone on a very exposed hillside. The electricity got knocked out during the “beast from the east” and it got so cold the pipes froze. That was fun with a 2 year old....

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 27/11/2021 22:50

Overnight it gets down to about 13 now, from 21 & going off when I go to bed, if I leave it off the next day it goes down to about 9, but before I had the central heating put in it was 'fucking freezing' (no thermostat or whatever then so that's as accurate as it gets!!)

The older lady on the news made me cry earlier. I wanted to bundle her up & bring her here.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 27/11/2021 22:54

@VaguelyInteresting. That must have been
Fun with a 2yo. The only good bit is that they're naturally great little radiators!!

Thanks for the reminder, I've just been putting the heating off at night, you've reminded me to put it on the frost setting instead tonight!

Floralnomad · 27/11/2021 22:55

Our thermostat is set to 16 overnight and the heating never comes on so warmer than that .

fourandtwo · 27/11/2021 23:02

We’d have the wood burner on if we had no (electric) heating. We’re in Sweden and the houses are well insulated here so I’d imagine it wouldn’t be too bad.

sotty6 · 27/11/2021 23:07

Sounds like our bedroom is terribly insulated then - which is funny really because in summer heatwaves the bloody house won't cool down for love nor money - it's a furnace!

womaninatightspot · 27/11/2021 23:09

Freezing. It's -5 and we live in an old house. I'm leaving the heating on low overnight.

whistleinthewind · 27/11/2021 23:10

Detached house in the South Downs - 1970's build. Overnight the airtemp in dd's room was 18, the hearing was set to 19.5. If we turned it off for 24hrs it would easily drop to low teens. Would then take 2 days to hear back up (lies but maybe 12-14hrs

hamsterchump · 27/11/2021 23:11

17 is the lowest I generally see and the heating's often off as I don't find it cold really. We have cavity wall insulation as well as loads of loft insulation but we do get condensation on the windows (I have to wipe it every day or eventually we get little spots of mould on the window reveals) and I always wonder if that is exacerbated by little movement of air/draughts so I suppose you can't have everything.

AurevoirLesEnfants · 27/11/2021 23:12

Allegedly 15 degrees, but it feels significantly colder! Think our thermostat is in the wrong place.

hamsterchump · 27/11/2021 23:13

@sotty6 That's the same problem though in reverse. If it was better insulated it would be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Without insulation it's more likely to be close to the same temperature as outside.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 27/11/2021 23:14

Downstairs each morning is max 11 degrees. My Lean to utility reached a high of 6 today! Manage to get the front room up to about 18 in the day with combination of open fire and gas heater. No central heating here and only some crap electric radiators which cost a fortune to run. The joys of being a tenant!

Wafflesnsniffles · 27/11/2021 23:15

It depends on how warm it was before the heating was off and how long the heating has been off for.

Ours is about 12c without the heating on. We tend to have it on max an hour a day and mostly just sit in my room with an oil filled radiator. - much more affordable than keeping the whole house warm.

Timeisavirtue · 27/11/2021 23:15

The lowest I’ve seen it here is 11..

RoseMartha · 27/11/2021 23:20

About 15 on a very cold outside night temperatures . 16-17 average winter night.
I only have the heating on from 3pm until about 7pm in the evening and an hour in the morning but the rads take about two hours to fully cool. And it only kicks in when it drops below 20.

I think i am lucky in the sense it doesnt get that cold as a middle flat. The flip side is it gets very hot at night in the summer.

When I lived in my house it would drop down to about 10.

changingchanges2 · 27/11/2021 23:21

It's been about 22C inside last few days. We're in a well insulated new build apartment.

We actually put the air con on overnight to keep us cool Blush

Coldest it's ever got? Maybe 17C in one of the bedrooms when we had that really freezing winter last year.
