Was my old history teacher a walking safeguarding issue

It’s been 2 years since I left high school so I was wondering if anyone could chip in with their opinions. Let’s call him Mr B, from the get go I never liked him… he always just gave me a bad vibe (I have experienced a lot of bad things in my short life but damn I have felt the most uncomfortable and unsafe in his class). He would go on about sex for inappropriate lengths of time, for example he would talk about the Japanese women who were tortured and raped during WW2, (keep in mind we never learnt about Japan in our qualification Hmm). It just seemed he enjoyed yapping on about it. Another example is that he’d go on about syphilis to the point that me and my friend would joke about how he was a fetish about it (to make it worse we were the only girls in our class). I won’t go on about what other things he said cos I’d be here all evening. I wanted to tell the HOY about it but he was very popular in my school and I didn’t want the fuss. No I don’t need therapy, I just remembered this and wanted to get MN verdict

Always trust your gut feeling
If he felt unsafe he probably was

Whatinthelord · 26/11/2021 21:53

I agree trust your gut.
Weird for a teacher to be so focused on sex

cloudtree · 26/11/2021 22:00

What is it with these threads at the moment,

Rivermonsters · 26/11/2021 22:04

MissCruellaDeVil · 27/11/2021 00:47

Trust your gut OP, does he still work at the school?

BobbieT1999 · 27/11/2021 05:36

I would always say to trust your gut and if your instinct is that he wasn't safe to be around then you should pay attention to that.

However, I'm not sure, from your description, how the following is necessarily inappropriate:
He would go on about sex for inappropriate lengths of time, for example he would talk about the Japanese women who were tortured and raped during WW2, (keep in mind we never learnt about Japan in our qualification). It just seemed he enjoyed yapping on about it

Lots of teachers (in my experience the best ones) talk about their subject on topics outside of the syllabus. It demonstrates enthusiasm for the subject (in this case history) and encourages it in others. The syllabus doesn't always inspire interest from students so it's important when good teachers do this.

It's also important for people to learn about atrocities that occurred that might not be covered by the syllabus and the fate of the Japanese women has been the subject of renewed focus in recent years to highlight something many were ignorant of. That is also an important part of history - what we learn about the past is dependent on societies bias. (And the WWII syllabus didn't talk about the fate of Japanese women but its still an important part of wwii history that as victors British schoolchildren haven't formally learned about)

So all of these things could be reason for his focus on this, especially he'd been reading about it in his own time and wanting to share his knowledge. Or perhaps he's close to someone who was directly or indirectly affected.

You don't say whether he was being lechy or just trying to teach about an event you found distasteful.

Can't really comment about him talking about syphilis without context. It was a rife disease in history with a lot of social impact (and potentially political if you believe certain people were afflicted). Many people find it interesting.

I will always tell anyone to make sure they keep safe and err on the side of caution where safeguarding is concerned but I don't think any of us can pass judgement on your history teacher with the detail you provide in your post.

Not sure why someone your age is on Mumsnet.

wheresmymojo · 27/11/2021 08:32

@Clawdy

Not sure why someone your age is on Mumsnet.

I wish I'd been on MN from that age. I've learned so much from here about all sorts of things...it's like tapping in to the collective wisdom of generations of women before you.

Perfect place for a young woman to come IMO.

Many of us here don't have DC and most chat here isn't DC related so what's the problem?

MrsSkylerWhiite · 27/11/2021 08:33

Let's all tell the OP stories of our time at high school where our male teachers behaved inappropriately towards us.

Maybe we could add photos.

Fet2021duejuly2022 · 27/11/2021 08:35

Nothing of what you’ve said seems inappropriate to me, can you elaborate?

wheresmymojo · 27/11/2021 08:35

I had a Design & Tech teacher that used to wander round and pull and snap our bra straps when we were bent over doing a design drawing.

This was in the late 90s and now I'm Shock that while we obvs talked about it a lot between ourselves none of us even thought to mention it to another adult.

cloudtree · 27/11/2021 08:35

Exactly

Just a reminder that troll hunting is banned - if you think OP is a troll then just report the post there's no need to go on about and derail the thread for those that don't think it is.

Yes, the more lurid the detail the better for our OP. Hmm
cloudtree · 27/11/2021 08:40

I know troll hunting is banned but I’m not sure why exactly. They’re hardly an endangered species on MN

MikeHuntMikeHunt · 27/11/2021 08:42

What a strange thing to think Does it really matter? 🙄 Good God
JenniferWooley · 27/11/2021 08:43

OP said she left school 2 years ago, assuming she's in England that makes her around 20yo - I was pregnant with DD at 20 so it's not outside the realms of possibility that a young woman could have a legitimate reason for using a parenting website.
