Come and talk to me about toasters.

Ours got binned the other day when it nearly caught fire after Ds had been cooking hashbrown waffles in it and it got all greasy. It wasnt a very good toaster, the 2nd set of toasting sockets would not work independently of the 1st, so I'm not sad to see it go.
That set me to thinking I have owned a lot of shit toasters over the years, ones where you had to turn the bread over part way through as it cant cope with the modern bread size or flimsy ones that always smelt a bit funny and I have never had one that I've been completely happy with.
It's 2021 someone must have made the perfect toaster by now one where the sockets work independently, that fits different sizes of bread products and it won't overheat.

I am determined not to buy another dud, so if you love your toaster please tell me why, and which one it is.

I have a Morrison's own brand red one, 4 slice, still fine after 5 years of daily use. You can't cook potato waffles in it and it's not too keen on hot cross buns (trips electric due to the sugar in the fruit apparently)

magicstar1 · 24/11/2021 18:50

I got a great one in Aldi. It's one long slot, so you can put in a slice of turnover / bloomer or two ordinary slices. It's got a glass front so you can see the toast through it. There's also a matching kettle that lights up. I love them!

Dualit the only ones that can be repaired, my old one is quite weighty but the new ones seem a lot lighter, hope they are not made in China now

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/11/2021 19:00

They are evil - they fool you into thinking they would toast your bread and then when they have inserted themselves into your kitchen and feel safe: charcoal or slightly warm

Mrsjayy · 24/11/2021 19:03

I have an Asda 4 slot toaster it fits all bread toasts separately It was £25 . I had my first toaster 25 years . So I'm hoping this 1 lasts 😄

I got fed up with a succession of broken toasters. Then I had a revelation…. what I needed was a commercial toaster. I bought a rather nice, if somewhat utilitarian looking, 6 slice toaster, designed for hotels and b & bs. Even my toast loving, teen heavy household couldn’t break it… or so I thought. It lasted 6 weeks.

I currently have Lakeland’s 4 slice toaster. It’s lasted a record (for my house) 6 months and is still going strong.

This looks like the replacement to mine which browns really evenly:

I don't think it will matter what you buy if DS is going to try to toast hash brown waffles in it (they are better than either hash browns or potato waffles). I'm following with interest because I've found toasters universally rubbish, I've had two in five years and they only get occasional use. I think dualit are still good but I'm not sure if the slot is deep enough for some bread.

Wombat46 · 24/11/2021 20:58

I got a toaster free with many Safeway points in 1997. It's still going strong, I'm amazed.

Nousernameforme · 24/11/2021 23:24

Ds will most definitely not be toasting hash brown waffles in the new one however delicious they might be with a dab of salted butter.
Dualit might be the way to go though that Aldi one looks fancy

DH just bought a fancy Dualit 'architect' toaster after weeks of extensive research and it's a bag of shite.

Nousernameforme · 25/11/2021 08:05

@SlurpleThePurple this is the information I need. Do not buy the dualit architect toaster.

We've not had an expensive toaster before. The one prior to this was a cheap one in a set from Asda for £15 which included a kettle and something else. It lasted us 10 years! I feel cheated.

ablutiions · 25/11/2021 08:22

Dualit. Can be repaired, sturdy build . Look lovely.

Roselilly36 · 25/11/2021 08:23

Avoid Dualit, we bought one from JL worse toaster I have ever bought. Used to be renowned for quality, no longer the case.

flowerarrangement · 25/11/2021 08:26

Traditional dualit here, love it, it must be five years old.

Catsandslippers · 25/11/2021 09:40

Surprised to hear negative reviews about dualit. We've had our architect for 4 years now, absolutely love it! Best toaster I've ever owned, had zero issues with it, gets a daily hammering & is still good as new. The matching kettle is also still going strong.

flowerarrangement · 25/11/2021 09:53

I did have one of the cheaper dualits (Lite?) with the black plastic sides before I took the plunge and bought the all metal one.

After about four years the black plastic melted nearest to the slots on top of the toaster, but still, I thought that four years was ok for daily use.

Nousernameforme · 25/11/2021 10:28

Maybe Dualits were good back in the day but the quality has gone downhill.
I've found a toast to the top Neville but I think that only comes as a 2 slice and I don't think I cba to stand and wait when doing breakfasts

Breville not Neville

Thelnebriati · 25/11/2021 10:30

I'm saving up for a cooker with an eye level grill and the day it arrives the bastard toaster will be binned.

Nousernameforme · 25/11/2021 10:36

@Thelnebriati I would love one of those but we rent so no chance for us. I miss those we used to grill loads. Oh you can have proper cheese on toast and everything.

Catering toaster - look in Nisbets. Dualit old style or Rowlett, Lincat etc. It will be £100+ but last for ever and they mostly have replaceable elements.

RallySooney · 25/11/2021 10:44

I have this and love it.
