Ours got binned the other day when it nearly caught fire after Ds had been cooking hashbrown waffles in it and it got all greasy. It wasnt a very good toaster, the 2nd set of toasting sockets would not work independently of the 1st, so I'm not sad to see it go.
That set me to thinking I have owned a lot of shit toasters over the years, ones where you had to turn the bread over part way through as it cant cope with the modern bread size or flimsy ones that always smelt a bit funny and I have never had one that I've been completely happy with.
It's 2021 someone must have made the perfect toaster by now one where the sockets work independently, that fits different sizes of bread products and it won't overheat.

I am determined not to buy another dud, so if you love your toaster please tell me why, and which one it is.

@NotMeNoNo

Catering toaster - look in Nisbets. Dualit old style or Rowlett, Lincat etc. It will be £100+ but last for ever and they mostly have replaceable elements.
I really wanted the Rowlett one as it has such a nice industrial/modernist look but my DH vetoed it as apparently the slots aren't very wide!

The issue I have with architect is the temperature doesn't seem consistent across the slots. So one piece of toast ends up more done than the other.

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2021 13:01

@SlurpleThePurple what is it he's toasting that needs a wide slot?
In the Dualit, you can jam quite a lot in the sandwich cages if you line them with cut up toaster bags.

Honesty I have no idea Envy

I looked I to this a while ago and all I recall is none of the expensive ones are that good anymore. I ended up buying a Breville that would fit Warburton bread as we do buy that quite a lot! It's done okay so far but seems far from sturdy.

KrispyKale · 25/11/2021 13:05

I can see catering stuff might be the way to go.

Gladioli23 · 25/11/2021 13:08

I have a 2 slot Russell Hobbs toaster that has lasted a decade so far including university use, and moving house at least 6+ times.

It's deep enough to happily toast a bagel, which was my requirement for it.

It looks like they sell a 4 slot version called (catchily) the 24094 . Obviously the trouble with telling you anything has lasted ten years is there has been ten years for them to change their manufacturing but this one has suited me well.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/11/2021 13:08

My Dualit is18 years old and still going strong.

KrispyKale · 25/11/2021 13:09

Can I buy it off you?!

Pashazade · 25/11/2021 13:42

Apparently I've had my Russell Hobbs toaster exactly 8 years! It's brilliant and will take big slices of bread and handles buns etc really well. Love it and would happily buy another.

Any decent toaster I’ve owned has been a supermarket own one. When I’ve spent more on brands they’ve lasted little time, or been crap.

trumpisagit · 25/11/2021 13:52

We had an Asda own brand one before, and it was fine.
It broke and toast loving DS obviously thought we were taking too long to choose a new one and bought us a Goodmans one (from B and M) for Xmas last year.
We are pleased with it and still working well. We only toast bread, bagels and crumpets in it though.

Shmithecat2 · 25/11/2021 13:53

We've had a Dualit (in storage somewhere now), needed one in a hurry, bought one from Asda, and its fine. I don't miss the Dualit. Maybe buy some toaster bags for your son so he doesn't break the next one.

It sounds like all toasters are a bit shit nowadays. I might just buy this because it looks like a robot

I have an old Dualit (20+) and it's excellent. So sorry to her that the rand might now have declined.

Mine looks just the same as this, though it is coloured, not silver:
www.amazon.co.uk/Dualit-Classic-2-Slot-Toaster-Stainless/dp/B00008BQZE/ref=asc_df_B00008BQZE/?hvlocphy=1007322&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=218884797580&hvpone&hvlocint&th=1&hvpos&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-378096853564&hvrand=3517893813716731184

The blurb says that it is made in the UK and repairable.

scottishnames · 25/11/2021 18:50

'brand' not 'rand'. Sorry.

flowerarrangement · 25/11/2021 18:52

I think the classic one still is scottishnames, the spin offs aren't, they're designed here but made overseas.

Davros · 25/11/2021 21:49

I still say Sage Appliances!

I've had one of the cheaper Dualit toasters and been underwhelmed with it.

I've just bitten the bullet and bought the (far more expensive, made in the UK) Classic and hope that will be the difference.

Toasters and kettles seem to be so disposable these days, no matter how much or how little you spend on them, none seem to last long. I am hoping making the jump to full-on ridiculous and repairable might actually prove worth it.
