Three hours after completion still in my house

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 17:21

As the title.

Completed at 2pm.

No keys. Agents frantically calling vendors. They are still packing the van. Agent and solicitor tell them in no uncertain terms that they do not own the property anymore and are now breaking the law.

An hour and a half passes and they drop the keys off with the agent.

Phew, we think, they are all gone. So we pick up the keys and drive to the property - they are still there and the house is still full. I mean full - could still see paintings on the wall in the lounge, hallway and kitchen filled with boxes, appliances.

Get a sob story of how they have been at work all day (completion date hardly comes as a fucking surprise, maybe take the day off as we did?)

I tell them that they no longer own the properly, me and my husband do, and that actually, we could legally walk in and lock the doors, “you couldn’t” came the reply - I don’t know what planet some people live on.

Called the agent who was like, What?! Solicitor aghast too. Our solicitor have contacted thieves saying that yep, we’ll just lock them out if we chose to and charge them to remove their properly.

I didn’t go in and lock the doors, I’m not that much of a prick even though it’s now my property and they are trespassing. My 15 month old was knackered in the back of the car.

Back at home now, thankfully only 5 mins down the road and thank god in a rented house so no massive deal tonight although removals booked for 9am.

I’m so pissed off. We’ve had a really awful few months, I’ve got a close relative in hospital, Ive been fighting for a diagnosis for them, I’ve been ill myself.

Why are people such dicks?

BTW, what sort of idiot doesn't pack in advance? (I'm talking about people who think they do all of that on the day)

sueelleker · 25/11/2021 09:37

Exactly. Would these posters be equally as chill if they bought a car and the owner said ‘oh let me keep it for a couple more hours as it’s inconvenient to hand it over now’. Would they be as chill if they purchased any service - let’s say paid for nursery - and the manager said ‘oh could you bring the child back on Wednesday, it’s inconvenient for us to take her today’.
Once you’ve purchased something, it’s yours and you have the right to use it.

Or you sell a dress, but ask if it's ok for you to wear to a party that night!

Teacupsandtrainers · 25/11/2021 10:09

In Scotland this would never happen so it stuns me the Audacity of sellers who don't seem to think they actually need to move house.

I don’t know if it’s less common but I do know someone who this happened to in Scotland. Seller no longer even lived there but hadn’t moved all their stuff out and seemed to think they could come back when it suited them to move it.

Oftenithinkaboutit · 25/11/2021 10:15

Why would this “never happen in Scotland”

No cheesy fuckers in Scotland?

Oftenithinkaboutit · 25/11/2021 10:15

Cheeky!!

Cocogreen · 25/11/2021 10:19

@tomwombsgans

The people suggesting they'd be fine with this situation are naive or just trying to be cool. No one wants to be inconvenienced.
Or they've been disorganised CF sellers in the past. Moving house is one of the most stressful things you ever do - you don't need stress added by lazy sods who think they can move out at their own convenience. Hope it's all going well OP.

I'm sorry I just don't get the drama of this thread. They were late leaving the property but the op is not homeless or anything similar and simply has to clean the house or get a cleaner in. It's not the end of the world.^

Are you the seller??? Simply has to clean or get a cleaner in? What, on top of all the other stresses of moving day? How entititled and ignorant that sounds!!!

Had this happen to me with my first property, took the afternoon off work as informed money went through at 11am and keys available at noon. Got there, seller still packing, no sign of a van. Office nearby and no friends in the area so went back to office and called agents (pre-mobile phone era) who apologised and said would chase up seller. Cue many phone calls, eventually informed at 6pm seller was cleaning and keys at 7pm. So returned with my van, which had been filled the previous night and parked at a friend's, at 7pm and discovered yes keys were finally there but flat absolutely filthy, all light bulbs removed, loo needed industrial bleaching before use (think 3rd day festival state...) kitchen cupboards had doors hanging off and rickety shelves, carpets manky and unvacuumed - what cleaning?

Ended up cleaning and fixing things all night, discovered boiler not working so no hot water, had to boil kettles, and cost me an extra day van hire PLUS new boiler £2000, nightmare! This was my first home too. Did eventually get a letter of apology from the estate agents but no reimbursement of expenses and after going round in circles for months, gave up. Still feel bitter about it but no doubt posters like EuromamaAussiekids and DancingQueen85 would tell me it's no biggie and to just accept and get over it...!

Oftenithinkaboutit · 25/11/2021 10:21

Someone woth @EuromamaAussiekids stance re “be chilled man” is someone who would think nothing about starting to pack on day of completion and leaving buyer and kids hanging around for hours

Exactly. Selling and buying a house is not a short process more than enough time to sort out and pack up before Completion.
Changecountetextraordinaire · 25/11/2021 10:25

It most certainly does happen in Scotland. Speaking from bitter experience Grin

mafsfan · 25/11/2021 10:27

We had this too, including one of them driving to the estate agent to drop off keys but still being there when we turned up with said keys. Their previous sale had fallen through so they would only accept our offer in the basis that we had to complete within 6 weeks - which we did, despite DH being working in the Middle East with minimal communication opportunities. Then they couldn't get out of the house on time!!

The 'funny' DH also asked us if we wanted their massive outside dog kennel because they couldn't figure out how to get it out of the garden! Errr no CF, you've got an hour dismantle it and get out!! We own this house now!

Then a few years later we went on to sell the house. Mrs CF started posting all over the agents social media adverts of the house that the house wasn't worth as much as we were asking for it!!! So pleased when we sold it for a decent profit! Grin

tomwombsgans · 25/11/2021 10:31

Yeah no biggie at all

Twatarse · 25/11/2021 10:43

Thank you every one and i’m so sorry to hear about other people’s shit experiences too.

Everything is scrubbed, between us and inlaws we manned go get it done and I’m hanging round the park with little dd who hasn’t got a clue what’s going on and needs a nap, while everything is moved in.

Twatarse · 25/11/2021 10:45

*managed.

Although I think you have all gleaned from my posts that I distractedly type in a hurry and proof reading before hitting post isn’t my style Grin

Terribleluck · 25/11/2021 10:48

This happened to me too. Fortunately our buyer was flexible so it was no biggie. We were all flexible. I think shit happens, and you just move on (or in in this case!)

Quickchangeartiste · 25/11/2021 10:48

Yea it happens in Scotland. Happened to me.
Previous owner had a senior job don’t ya know, and just didn’t have time to pack.
I was at a funeral, and DH nearly burst a blood vessel in frustration.
It was also filthy but I don’t think she would have noticed; left a lot of kitchen stuff, which I threw in a box for collection. She sent her mum…

Months later she got upset when I returned deliveries to senders as she’d not updated her accounts and not provided a forwarding address.

Some people, even in Scotland are entitled or ignorant.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 25/11/2021 10:55

Glad you're in op. What a pita. I'd have been massively stressed too. The people we had our house off left a bin full of dog shit and not cleared any up off the lawn.

BonnesVacances · 25/11/2021 10:59

I keep reading these threads expecting to see my buyers from years ago. I had sold a flat and moved to a flat in another county. The EA told me to leave my keys in the flat as they had a set from doing the viewings. Only they couldn't find them.

I eventually checked my phone at the end of a long day's moving to find loads of voicemails from my solicitor and EA asking if I happened to have kept my set of keys. I can only assume they had to get a locksmith out so the new owners could finally get in.

whitehorsesdonotlie · 25/11/2021 11:02

Some people are just really disgusting, aren't they? I:m sorry you've had this experience. How handy that your in-laws can come and help clean!

I hope that karma reaches the people you bought the house from, and that their new house is absolutely filthy too. They are cheeky fuckers. Are you going to contact your solicitor for compensation?

Enjoy your new home!

bluecandicane · 25/11/2021 11:04

Ahhh OP hope today goes well what a nightmare

AnotherMalbecPlease · 25/11/2021 11:09

Not quite the same but when I moved into my current home, my buyer's money had not arrived by 3 (meant to complete at 1) despite many phone calls to her from my solicitor and myself, and so I could not complete on my new home. My removal men couldn't wait any longer so they had to put all my stuff in storage. My old house was empty so I had to go into a hotel and buy clothes etc. We completed the following day but my removal men were booked that day so had to unload the day after. All in all, the delay cost me nearly £1000. My buyer refused to reimburse me so I took her the the Small Claims Court and won.

Annasgirl · 25/11/2021 11:14

Hi OP,

I read your posts yesterday and was upset for you. We once bought a sofa as part of the house sale. The owner changed the sofa to an old one - we had completed when we saw it, and the owner refused to remove the sofa. He also left an attic full of junk which we had to skip.

The process of house buying has shown me that some people are horrible.

I hope you have a long, healthy and happy life with your family in your new home - and a lovely glass of wine with your DH tonight!!!

NorthSouthcatlady · 25/11/2021 11:21

Arseholes. It’s very bad karma. Ironic there were so many of them but basically they just could not be bothered being out and cleaning Hmm
Hopefully things improve from here on in

Mulhollandmagoo · 25/11/2021 11:30

Some people are just really crap!! It takes the shine off moving into your new home! Definitely contact the solicitors and see if there will be any recompense for you!
