Three hours after completion still in my house

As the title.

Completed at 2pm.

No keys. Agents frantically calling vendors. They are still packing the van. Agent and solicitor tell them in no uncertain terms that they do not own the property anymore and are now breaking the law.

An hour and a half passes and they drop the keys off with the agent.

Phew, we think, they are all gone. So we pick up the keys and drive to the property - they are still there and the house is still full. I mean full - could still see paintings on the wall in the lounge, hallway and kitchen filled with boxes, appliances.

Get a sob story of how they have been at work all day (completion date hardly comes as a fucking surprise, maybe take the day off as we did?)

I tell them that they no longer own the properly, me and my husband do, and that actually, we could legally walk in and lock the doors, “you couldn’t” came the reply - I don’t know what planet some people live on.

Called the agent who was like, What?! Solicitor aghast too. Our solicitor have contacted thieves saying that yep, we’ll just lock them out if we chose to and charge them to remove their properly.

I didn’t go in and lock the doors, I’m not that much of a prick even though it’s now my property and they are trespassing. My 15 month old was knackered in the back of the car.

Back at home now, thankfully only 5 mins down the road and thank god in a rented house so no massive deal tonight although removals booked for 9am.

I’m so pissed off. We’ve had a really awful few months, I’ve got a close relative in hospital, Ive been fighting for a diagnosis for them, I’ve been ill myself.

Why are people such dicks?

We had this. Had to wait over 2 hours to get in with our cat in the car. They still left some cups in the cupboards etc. They chose a shoddy removal firm (man with a van).

ChicCroissant · 24/11/2021 17:47

I would change the locks ASAP as they probably still have a set of keys - can you change the barrel in the front door tonight?

Doveyouknow · 24/11/2021 17:47

We were late out of a property once. Our removal lorry turned up late. Felt terrible about it but there wasn't much we could do...

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 17:47

ds just clarified, stuff on neighbours drive but could still see them sat in the front room.

MurielSpriggs · 24/11/2021 17:48

Very little you can do unfortunately. Going in and locking the door with all their stuff inside would have been totally counterproductive. You're then left with the problem of a house full of shit you don't want and needing to remove it, and trying to recover the costs of doing so. Far better to let them do it now.

And although they are in breach of contact (and trespassing) and you're entitled to damages, it's only for financial loss you've incurred (with a duty upon you to mitigate the loss). It sounds like you are not out of pocket to anything like the extent that justifies a legal battle.

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 17:49

@MurielSpriggs yeah I know. I’m just pissed off. The sale has taken 11 months as they have dicked about all the way, so this is hardly a surprise, sadly.

We’ve had this two house moves. The first one we were going in with stuff through the front door and the sellers were going out with stuff at the back door. We had some power tools disappear but couldn’t prove anything.
The second one was an elderly gent who was clearly overwhelmed and had little assistance with the move. We helped sort his stuff out for a few hours with no great impact on us as we were still in rental in the street opposite.

stalkersaga · 24/11/2021 17:49

At this point, I wouldn't blame you if you did start considering the "contacting thieves" option. That'd get the house cleared quick!

Oftenithinkaboutit · 24/11/2021 17:50

Completed at 2pm? I’d have been outside the property at 2.05pm if you only 5 mins away.

It’s amazing how much quicker they would have moved if you’d walked in and started pottering about with your children.

At 2.10pm I would have called the agent as asked him to come immediately to the property.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 24/11/2021 17:51

You need to go back now. Shout at them!

AllotmentTime · 24/11/2021 17:51

What, like, just sitting there??

Some people are unbelievable- add me to the numbers which did not know this was a thing until I read about it on here. Ridiculous.

Danikm151 · 24/11/2021 17:54

Tell them you’ll be charging them rent plus cleaning fees. Especially as they evidently aren’t going to clean up

MurielSpriggs · 24/11/2021 17:55

Yes, sorry, didn't mean to minimise your right to feel totally pissed off! They are nob heads.

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 17:55

Yes, ds said they were all sat in the living room (it’s. dark obvs, no curtains so they were lit up like a christmas tree).

I would be more understanding if it was an elderly person, or a single parent who was struggling getting out on time.

This isn’t the case. They are a family with three grown sons at home, all there. It’s not like they don’t have the man power to pack up.

They are just taking the piss.

OP posts:
ginghamstarfish · 24/11/2021 18:00

How annoying. I think I would sit outside in the car, or if DH was with me maybe go and sit inside MY house and watch them packing, making sure they don't leave any crap or cause any damage. When someone is taking the piss like this, you should be able to go in and chuck all their stuff out really, they've had long enough to know this was coming.

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 18:02

I mean, I have an elderly relative completing on a property close to me in a couple of weeks. He’s 3 hours away and I am going up with a van the night before and packing up through the night to make sure that the property is emptied out and cleaned as “ learly as possible in the morning, I wouldn’t want someone hanging around for me.

Maybe I should just take my sweet time and do this to the family buying his house? Oh, wait,
I wouldn’t because I’m not an idiot. And I’ve planned ahead.

The absolute cheek Angry
I don't understand why people don't have all their crap packed up by the day before and just leave the basics out for a quick exit. Took me a couple of weeks to sort and pack the house before we moved here, there's no way I'd be leaving it to the last minute (and beyond)!
Hope all goes smoothly OP & that they at least leave it clean!

handsoffmychips · 24/11/2021 18:03

FFS some people Grin

I bought a flat off a woman who left every room full of furniture "in case I wanted it" no madam I do not want your filthy couch, 2 beds, 2 wardrobes, tatty MFI chests of drawers, broken ironing board, chipped plates etc!

I picked up the keys from the estate agent on my lunch, went to the flat at 6pm on the Friday and couldn't do anything until Monday. She was a single mum so I cut her some slack but still...

ColinTheKoala · 24/11/2021 18:03

then called to say they'd got a van stuck under a bridge

we had this too. We told the removal people there were only two ways in, and both involved a low bridge but did they listen? They had to let some air out of the tyres of the van to get it underneath the higher bridge. Fortunately we didn't have a chain at the time so it was only us we needed to worry about.

Santaischeckinglists · 24/11/2021 18:03

Go park your car on your drive. Sit in it and eat fish and chips...

FairFuming · 24/11/2021 18:04

Oh god this is frustrating. Definitely try get some compensation

DaisyNGO · 24/11/2021 18:04

You definitely need a locksmith....they won't have handed over all the keys.

Twatarse · 24/11/2021 18:04

They chose the completion date too! We bent over backwards to accommodate them! It was supposed to be last friday, they wanted to change to today. Dh has had to re arrange work at the last minute to get today and tomorrow off which wasn’t easy for him either.

Why chose a day yourself then do this?

OP posts:
HermioneKipper · 24/11/2021 18:05

What absolute bastards. I go and stand over them and make sure they get the hell out without causing any damage.

These people have no consideration for anyone else!

FazedNotPhased · 24/11/2021 18:05

Fuck waiting on the drive with my fish and chips, I'd let myself in and eat it in my living room.
