Have you got an Electric Blanket?

crochetmonkey74 · 23/11/2021 11:14

I want one but I think i am a bit nervous as the last time I had one it was as a kid in the 80s and I remember being certain I was getting electrocuted at any moment - are they good?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but if you’ve landed here looking for electric blankets, we’ve recently updated our best electric blanket page with loads of great options that have been tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I have! Bloody love it!
Apart from having my dc, it's the best decision I've ever made Grin

Wnikat · 23/11/2021 11:21

As PP says it's my second favourite thing after my children.

TeaStory · 23/11/2021 11:25

I have one - I love it! My DC have them too and really like them. Nothing like that lovely warm enveloping feeling. They have automatic timers on them now so you can fall asleep with it on but then it will switch itself off.

BookBug482 · 23/11/2021 11:27

Yes. Best thing ever. Getting myself a new one for Christmas couldn't live without it!

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 23/11/2021 11:27

Yes and mine is now plugged in to a smart plug so I can turn it on in advance of coming in from a nightshift. My favourite thing EVER.

crosbystillsandmash · 23/11/2021 11:28

Every bed in the house now has one!
Nothing beats climbing into a warmed up bed, op you need to get one asap.

This is genius!!
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 23/11/2021 11:30

Yes, it is marvellous. We have a dual zoned Silentnight one so DH and I can each have our side independently on, off or on different settings. It wasn’t expensive

TeenMinusTests · 23/11/2021 11:33

Mine has a fast heat which gets it warm in the time taken to have a quick shower.
Also a setting so it goes off automatically after an hour (or 9 hrs) so you can fall asleep with it on.

midsomermurderess · 23/11/2021 11:35

Yes, me too and I love it. One of my best buys in years. I sometimes leave it in very low so my cat can also enjoy it, slumbering on the bed during the day.

MissAmbrosia · 23/11/2021 11:36

Yes. It's marvellous.

crochetmonkey74 · 23/11/2021 11:38

ooh I think I am going to get one- I got in bed last night with very cold feet and it was miserable

Inthesameboatatmo · 23/11/2021 11:42

I need to get one after ready the replies, which ones are any good ,I'm worried about them catching fire! I know I know how very 80s warning lol.

crochetmonkey74 · 23/11/2021 11:47

would you go for an underneath one or a heated throw ?

I like the idea of a throw as I have a really thick mattress topper that I like to sleep on

OP posts:
Frenchfancy · 23/11/2021 11:49

Are they comfortable to sleep on? Can you feel the wires? I've been wanting one for ages but I keep hesitating.

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 23/11/2021 11:50

no, not since I awoke one morning to find scorch marks in my sheet

MLMshouldbeillegal · 23/11/2021 11:51

No because I don't live in the 1970s. Grin

Grew up with them. Then we got double glazing and central heating and the blankets were confined to the bin. Awful things.

BlibBlabBlob · 23/11/2021 11:59

I have a very expensive Tempur mattress and don't want to damage it with an electric blanket (fitted electric mattress covers are more common now BTW, not blankets with tie strips). But I have a heated duvet which is equally marvellous without potentially degrading the memory foam.

The fitted mattress cover is now on DD's bed which has a much cheaper mattress. It is wonderful to get into a pre-heated bed and as she has a double and still loves to cosleep I occasionally go and have a 'sleepover' with her to enjoy the electric blanket!

Get one, OP. They are very safe these days, not expensive to run, and heavenly on cold winter nights.

dontgobaconmyheart · 23/11/2021 11:59

I have two, the undersheet kind for the bed to warm it up on cold nights, and then the fleece throw kind, which lives in the blanket box in the lounge and gets used every day by me in the winter. It's heaven, I don't care if they're old fashioned.

I've had them for years and never seen the faintest whiff of a fire risk, you're using them supervised and they aren't intended to be left on continuously. I imagine the average home has just as many other things in it that are a 'fire risk' that still get used/left on/not repaired etc.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/11/2021 12:03

I have a heated underblanket and when I count my blessings it is high on the list. Getting into a heated bed is absolutely glorious, especially because I like to sleep in a cool and well ventilated room.

Justcannotbearsed · 23/11/2021 12:15

Got one from John Lewis - you can leave it on all night, independent controls, and it doesn't make me all hot and sweaty - menopause...

I need to google how to make the plug work so I can put it on remotely.

Hate a cold bed when you first get in.

edwinbear · 23/11/2021 13:21

We have electric under blankets on all the beds, they are amazing! I can get mine super toasty hot in 15 mins, then set it on a lower setting for 9 hours so I don't get up in the morning and forget to turn it off.

I also have a heated throw I have over my legs when working from home and for watching TV in the evenings - we've not had to turn the heating on yet so it's saving a fortune in energy costs.

Yes. Ours has independent controls for each side. I've just had to remind dh that it's his turn to go and switch it on. I've bought a new one this year which is full king size bed size - width and length. It's a game changer. I am happy with a very cool room and a warm bed.
Thursa · 23/11/2021 21:47

No. Many years ago a neighbour got up one morning to find her son had been electrocuted during the night. I’d never have one.
