I’ve started decluttering and now I regret EVERYTHING!

Four crates of DVDs/blu-rays decluttered. Yay!

Now I have to put them in the loft (I know I’ll want to watch them again at some point). Urgh.

Also, I’ve cleared loads of bookcase space so can probably ditch a couple of bookcases. Yay!

But now I have to put the bookcases into the garage. And paint the wall behind them.

Send me some strength?

Please?

Why are you keeping the DVDs. You can always rebuy, borrow from the library or what on a streaming service. The same with the shelves. Do you need the additional storage?

Shedmistress · 22/11/2021 16:13

Just put them all on Freecycle or marketplace and get rid.

That's not decluttering. You are just.moving stuff about. Decluttering means getting rid.

BusterGonad · 22/11/2021 16:15

Agreed, you're not decluttering just recluttering (the atic and garage).

Cryingbutstilltrying · 22/11/2021 16:15

The actual dealing with the stuff is far harder than deciding what to ditch, imo.
Always have an exit plan in place, charity bag, bin, whatever, but going soon.
Do you have to keep the bookcases? Anything unwanted here seems to go outside the house with a sign on saying ‘free’ and it’s been gone within hours.
Good luck with shifting it anyway, that’s a great start!

tunainatin · 22/11/2021 16:15

Well done on your progress! But if you are finding new places for things, isn't that reshuffling rather than decluttering? 😬 Could you sell dvds etc and use that money for a prescription to a movie streaming service? Do you need the bookcases in the garage?

ditalini · 22/11/2021 16:20

You will NEVER watch those dvds again. You know this deep down in your heart.

Get rid of them! In the unlikely event that you do want to watch one of them, you can stream, borrow, rebuy - all better options than cluttering up your loft.

TokyoSushi · 22/11/2021 16:22

OP! You're not decluttering, you're relocating. You need to actually get rid of them!

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/11/2021 16:35

If the films have been on the telly then you will never need them again.

SprayedWithDettol · 22/11/2021 16:46

It’s not decluttering if you keep the stuff and just hide it away. Charity shop and then you will feel so much better!

crystaltips98 · 22/11/2021 16:47

Get rid.

Squirrelblanket · 22/11/2021 16:50

Sorry to repeat what's been said, but yeah. Decluttering means it gets chucked out, not relocated.

doublemonkey · 22/11/2021 16:52

What you're doing is called churning, not decluttering.

Don't put anything in the loft. Wait for a week or two and see if you feel differently about properly getting rid of things to the charity shop.

Well done on making a start.

EishetChayil · 22/11/2021 16:59

Decluttering is such a weird modern euphemism.

Winter2020 · 22/11/2021 16:59

What are the chances that you are going to go up the attic to retrieve a movie to watch? Just get rid.

Totalwasteofpaper · 22/11/2021 17:01

No no no
NEWSFLASH: currently you arent decluttering you are shuffling things about your house

  1. Bluerays - scan them and ship them off to music magpie. everythingis digital now, just accept it's the future and release the blue rays.
  1. Bookcases go on freecycle or FB market place for 5 or 10 pounds each.
ThePoisonousMushroom · 22/11/2021 17:04

I am also decluttering. I have taken 3 boxes of books and toys and 3 bags of clothes to the charity shop, 2 bags of clothes in the clothes bank and done a run to the tip today!

SandAndSea · 22/11/2021 17:04

Well done on having a good old sort out! What is it that you regret?

Re the DVDs, I agree with others that you could donate them and probably not miss most (all?) of them. Another solution is to keep just the discs and file them in a wallet. They're easy to access and take up very little room.

The 20:20 rule might help you too. Can you replace it for under £20 in less than 20 minutes? If yes, let it go.

TulipsTwoLips · 22/11/2021 17:05

Lots of libraries are getting rid of DVDs too as most people stream these days
Jennalong · 22/11/2021 17:06

Take to the charity shop.

LuluBlakey1 · 22/11/2021 17:07

You are re-arranging deck-chairs on the Titanic. You'll fill the gaps with more stuff and your house will be so heavy it will sink under the ground- probably.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 22/11/2021 17:09

Put some nice ornaments on your freed-up bookcases and don't worry about clutter. Marie Kondo is hugely over-rated. (But I agree about getting rid of the dvds).

rumblypumbly · 22/11/2021 17:13

Is it really decluttering if you just move it from one place to another?

StrongLegs · 22/11/2021 17:22

I actually do like sticking stuff in the attic for a bit, just to see if I miss it. I'm all for the OP doing what she's doing.

Kpo58 · 22/11/2021 17:49

I know that people keep saying that you can get digital copies of the DVDs, but there are plenty of films and series that I want to watch which aren't online or if they are, you don't know when they will stop showing it or if the company will close down (if you bought it digitally). So having DVD back ups of some things make sense.

Unavailableusername · 22/11/2021 17:54

Get flippy CD cases to put the DVDs in and recycle the cases. They'll be easily hidden away then.
