Is there an app for keeping track of what's in fridge?

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone knows any apps which enable you to keep track of the food that's in your cupboards and fridge? I'm always loosing track and it would be great for when I go shopping!

Thank you

Just a bump in case anyone has any ideas this morning!

I just use Google Keep Notes, and create a checklist. When you use something up, you could uncheck it on the app. The ticked items are moved to the bottom and the unticked ones to the top. Then you have a ready made shopping list.

Just keep a list in your phone, don't need an app for it

nonamehere · 23/11/2021 12:39

I use 'Out of milk'. It has a pantry list, which can include a freezer section, and a shopping list where you list everything you ever buy, and tick them to add them to a list to take.

Squishedpickle · 23/11/2021 14:39

@Garman I tried that but there's too much stuff and it is difficult to navigate!

Thank you for the ideas!

I think this is a good idea- imagining scanning items out of your fridge one day.

I used to work in restaurants and the standard was the FIFO method (first on first out) and you had a list to cross things off. It works better for the hidden recesses of the freezer rather than faffing with lists everytime you take something out the fridge.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 23/11/2021 14:43

I use Color Note which is coloured post it notes. You can turn them into checklists and cross and uncross items. No gimmicks. Used it for 5+ years. I think my whole life is on it.

Have you considered opening the door and taking a peek?

NCnotmyusualone · 23/11/2021 14:46

Empty my fridge

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/11/2021 14:46

I tell Alexa to add stuff lve used up to shopping list.

She’s very obliging.

I've found that opening the fridge door works well enough.

Squishedpickle · 23/11/2021 14:54

It's not so much for knowing what things I need to buy, more what I don't! I've recently reorganised all the kitchen cabinets and for example I have 6 cans of chickpeas, 3 bottles of soy sauce, 3 packets of cinnamon. It will be easier now it's all in less of a pickle, but just was wondering if there's a simple app that I could check at a glance, rather than having to dig in the recesses of my cupboards every time I do a shop, or when I am in the shop buying dinner and can't remember if I have one of the key ingredients.

We use Google Keep to keep a list of what's in the freezer

Squishedpickle · 23/11/2021 14:59

@AlphabetAerobics @2bazookas Grin GrinGrin that would be ingenious

NoWaste - scan your food in and out

1forAll74 · 23/11/2021 17:23

Good heavens, just open the door, and memorise things. How do some people live without APPS..? It's good to have a nice notebook, and a nice pen, to write lists of things,!

Rabblesthecat · 23/11/2021 17:28

Meal plan, work out what you need for meals and other things, check your cupboards before you shop and don’t buy the stuff you have!

Anything I use up I get Alexa to add straight to my Ocado order!

I love tech and gadgets but what your suggesting is a bit too far even for me

parrotonmyshoulder · 23/11/2021 17:36

God there’s some unimaginative people on this thread. We don’t all have the same capacity for memory, organising, prioritising etc. It’s so unhelpful to assume that we do.

I’m going to look at some of these apps. My wasteful fridge has a tendency to make me feel guilty and inadequate!

ShortDaze · 23/11/2021 17:40

The Mealplan app has a pantry bit. I used it for freezer stuff as that’s what I tend to forget about, but you could use it for cupboards and fridge as well. It’s a bit American, but the amount in stock and amount I usually buy bits are handy.

Squishedpickle · 23/11/2021 17:44

Wow! I really wasn't expecting quite such a battering just for asking if there is an app for something.

As pp has said, there are many different reasons why people may find something difficult and I don't really see why a request for specific information has led to such snark and condescension. I'm pleased for you that you are able to manage. Others, evidently, are not and should not be bashed for seeking help to make improvements to their life.

I always think this would be really tricky to do unless you can train everyone in your house that ever uses the fridge, cupboards etc to use it.

It's a good idea though. I keep saying when I'm rich enough or tablets get cheap enough, I'll buy an Android tablet (or Google Home with screen) to keep in the kitchen to act as a virtual recipe book/timer/shopping list tracker/chore reminder etc. I can track a lot of these things on my phone, but nobody else can easily access them.

MackenCheese · 23/11/2021 17:49

I need an app to tell me when my teenage ds has eaten my hidden treats in the fridge!

Daisyhoney · 23/11/2021 17:51

Jesus it makes you wonder how anyone ever managed to do anything before the internet and apps. How did we all survive?
Seriously I find looking in the fridge and cupboards before I go shopping usually works very well.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/11/2021 17:54

For an app to work, the entire family has to scan out all the food they eat, then shopping has to be scanned in too.

That sounds tedious as hell and likely to get dull very quickly.
