Petite ladies, please help me buy some thermals

I'm 5ft 1 and I'm looking to buy some thermal long-johns, and possibly a top too although my legs are the most important bit.

So far I've only found some at M&S and Lands End, and neither of them have great reviews. Any other ideas?

I also wouldn't mind buying some "proper" ones from an outdoor shop or something, but none of them seem to make petites.

Try uniqlo maybe? Their sizes are cut small and the heat tech tops I have are all really cosy and have lasted years.

Otherwise you could do what I do sometimes for outdoor/ski gear and buy a girls age 13/14

tectonicplates · 21/11/2021 20:06

I'm looking for a petite length. Designed for women of 5ft 3 and under. I need long-johns in a size 16. Sizes that come up small are not what I'm looking for.

I just roll them up or cut the ends off tbh. They're under clothes anyway!

WellTidy · 22/11/2021 09:24

Following as I’ve never found long johns that aren’t really long on me (5 foot 1 and a size 14 bottoms). Instead I’ve bought fleece lined tights, the really super warm ones.

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 09:27

But some long johns have cuffs or elastication at the bottom, so I don't want to cut that off.

Also then they'll be too baggy at the crotch, kind of like wearing "one size" tights that keep falling down. That's why buying petites makes a difference.

I bought some years ago that were a Debenhams own brand so those aren't made any more. I've gained a lot of weight since then so that's why I need new ones.

I've given up with long johns (also five foot one) and now buy fleece lined tights or leggings from Primark of all places. Cheap as chips and while they're obviously not as good as merino thermals they're pretty good. Worth spending a few pounds to try them, perhaps?

ElaineMarieBenes · 22/11/2021 09:39

I recently bought the Lands End silk thermal long johns (extra small) and they are perfect for me (just under 5’ and size 8) - very pleased.

ElaineMarieBenes · 22/11/2021 09:43

My thermal tops are all M&S - one is a cashmere vest and the others are a silk mix - though not sure if they still do them.?) they are so cosy and warm (I’ve had them all for over 10 years and as good as new).

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 09:49

@ElaineMarieBenes Are the Lands End ones of good quality? There seem to be a load of bad reviews from people complaining about them falling apart etc.

Decathlon is worth a try as their thermal leggings are often designed to be worn with ski boots so are usually shorter in the leg. I’m 5’0 and most of their styles seem to work well for me

MenopauseSucks · 22/11/2021 09:59

5ft here & I use John Lewis silk thermals as they fit nicely under jeans/trousers.
You can roll them up successfully as the material is thin but very effective so not too bulky.
They also have some great thermal tights & tops.
Costly but worth it for the fit.

TrundlingAlong · 22/11/2021 10:22

I have some Kari Traa merino leggings that fit well. I'm an inch taller than you but have short legs. I have found other brands too long, though tbh under jeans etc they're not too annoying. Merino anything is definitely the best.

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 18:49

@ElaineMarieBenes Are these the ones you bought? www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Petite_Lightweight_Silk_Interlock_Long_Johns/pp/5279996.html?q=thermal

5ft nothing here, my thermals are from Sainsbury's, uniqlo and M&S. I never find the length matters, they are just extra cosy round my middle.Grin

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 18:58

By the way I'm going to a place where the temperature can go as low as minus 15c so whatever I buy it needs to be properly warm.

OP posts:
CottonSock · 22/11/2021 19:02

I almost got the lands end one a few weeks ago after seeing on petite thread. But the reviews suggested that recent change to poorer quality so I'm also looking.
26inch legs, 5'1" and size 12.

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 19:02

@hugoagogo but doesn't it get all baggy around the crotch? Kind of like "one size" tights that won't stay up and you have keep pulling them up?

OP posts:
tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 19:05

The thing about Uniqlo is that it doesn't tell us the inside leg measurement, which is the most important thing that I wanted to know. I really hate it when clothing websites have size charts that only tell you the waist and hip measurements, which I basically already knew anyway. Length is the most important thing!

OP posts:
TrundlingAlong · 22/11/2021 20:33

Tbh if you're talking those kinds of temperatures I would probably bprioritise the quality rather than the length, even though it's annoying there's not more choice out there. Better to be warm and occasionally have to yank them up a bit when you go to the loo rather than have UK high street thermals that fit perfectly but don't keep you warm at -15!

Another idea might be to head to a good quality outdoors shop but look for cropped, Capri or 3/4 length long johns? Which would then be nearly full length on you and could be worn with extra long wool socks.

tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 20:41

Yeah I was hoping an outdoor shop might help. Someone above mentioned Decathlon.

OP posts:
tectonicplates · 22/11/2021 20:55

Oh FGS I've just had a look at Blacks and Mountain Warehouse and neither of them tell you the inside leg measurement! Why do so many clothing companies have such unhelpful size charts?!

OP posts:
Saralyn · 22/11/2021 21:04

Some thermal long johns come in 3/4 length, maybe those would suit you?

100% Decathlon.

Its where I get mine. Definitely best value for money.

Its worth looking at women's base layer ski bottoms as they often are a 3/4 length which I've found get around the shortarse problem. They do the job of thermals but arent classified as thermals. They are however designed to be worn under other clothes.

Not all lines go up to a size 16, but some do.
