Do you ever see people who look as though they've stepped out of history?

This is something I always notice in Glasgow, but I can't put my finger on why.

Today I saw a man wearing a proper tweed suit, shirt, tie, coat, and hat! He also had what I can only describe as an old fashioned face.

All the time. DP is a historical reenactor and tour guide.

I was in a cafe abroad and saw this guy that looked like he belonged in the 70's, down to every last detail and with no irony at all, definately not trying to be cool. I'm convinced he went home to his orange and wood panelled living room for a drink from his sideboard mini bar Grin

It’s really odd seeing the kids these days dressing like it’s the 90s, complete with curtains.

Living in London there’s lots of retro types in tweed and pinup girl hair. I can see the appeal of dressing like it’s the 50s - I love the clothes

@coatsaremyonetruelove

There’s a man who walks along Byres Rd in full Highland rigout with a collie. It snapped quite suddenly at a friend once. Wonder if it’s the same guy.
Could be! It's nice to think that my mind didn't completely invent him anyway! I asked a couple of people if they ever saw him at the time, but nobody ever had.
StormBaby · 21/11/2021 17:10

My DH has a ‘war time’ look about him, especially when he sweeps his hair over, and little old ladies literally throw themselves at him. We had one chase us through a market once and she said she’d take him off my hands 🤣

I'd you see him again ask him if his names robbie? Or are if he's missing the tip of his ring finger. If so, he was my pal and literally kept me fed while a single mum.

I came on to say Harry Kane. Definitely got a face from the 40s or 50s somehow. Years ago I worked somewhere with the typical office dress code of suits and they brought in dress-down Fridays. I was dumbstruck that one colleague's idea of dressing down was to wear tweed plus fours. I don't think he even played golf, so no idea who goes to a shop and decides that's a good look. He was very sweet and slightly odd (obviously) and I think he should have been around in the 1920s.

This is lovely! 😍 Love the thought of your DH reminding them of past loves 😁 And I've always thought that about Harry Kane too!

I went with a friend for a summer Sunday afternoon walk through a village to a landmark up a hill. There was a man cutting his hedge who looked and was dressed like a mature man circa 1950..cream trousers, pale blue shirt, brown brogues, cream sun hat. Brown frame glasses, hair cut , both commented on it was like stepping back in time.
I have a friend whose house is like stepping back to 1945..the furnishings etc.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/11/2021 17:31

JRM has an old fashioned look about him as does his eldest son. He also follows the saying "Never wear brown in town" because when he's in the Commons he wears dark suits but when he's in the constituency (yes, he's our MP) he wears country style tweeds. I literally bumped into the pair of them in the High Street when he was canvassing before the last election

Guacamole001 · 21/11/2021 17:33

Yes. My next door neighbour. Looks like she wears clothes from a very dated Freemans catalogue lol.

ElaineMarieBenes · 21/11/2021 17:35

I definitely saw a Spartan warrior on a tram in Athens (June 2021!) despite his football shirt and jeans he didn’t fool me!

FredaFox · 21/11/2021 17:38

@EventOfTheSeason

I've never seen anyone who totally looks the part but I think Harry Kane has an old fashioned face.
Yea. I always picture him as a wartime soldier 😂
Vicliz24 · 21/11/2021 17:43

In Greece I often see people with the faces of the apostles

SquirrelFan · 21/11/2021 18:27

@Riverlee they were thinner then!
@Vicliz24 I work with someone of Greek heritage and I think he wouldn't look out of place on a Greek urn!

Maria53 · 21/11/2021 18:48

I live in Glasgow and often dress like im out of the 1950s! Grin

I know a few men who dress as you describe in Edinburgh/Glasgow and they all work as tailors.

Boood · 21/11/2021 18:49

@Badbadbunny

There was a sixth former at my son's school who wore a deer stalker hat with 3 piece tweed suit throughout both his sixth form years. Apparently, there was nothing else "weird" about him, he wasn't an oddball, and was "normal" in all other ways. For some reason, he just wanted to wear that kind of outfit.
I went to school with a boy who did that. He wasn’t exactly weird, but definitely very, very nerdy. Very polite, though.
Wbeezer · 21/11/2021 19:08

I kind of have the reverse, when I go to the Scottish National Portrait gallery I always see faces that closely resemble people around me today just with wigs on! Especially the slightly plump middle aged people from the 18th century.

GreenClock · 21/11/2021 19:24

Harry Kane definitely looks like a wartime Tommy from the neck up.

In 1999/2000 I used to visit a pub in Tooting whose landlady had a massive blonde back-combed and permed 1980s haircut. It looked so out of context at that time. She was a pretty woman but looked old fashioned.

TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky · 21/11/2021 19:34

@QueeniesCroft there is band called Clanadonia who played in Buchanan Street (pre covid) who dressed like that. Maybe he was one of them!

Ididanamechange · 21/11/2021 19:36

Im not surw if this is what you mean but a few months ago I saw an elderly lady who looked like the old ladies used to in my childhood. She was quite small, wore thick brown fairly baggy tights and had a brown mac and a blue rain hood on. She would have been a familiar sight 30 years ago but its not a look I've seen for for long time. Its hard to describe but it was a nice feeling of nostalgia seeing what she was wearing.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 21/11/2021 19:54

I saw a picture of Shailene Woodley today and thought she looked like a model from the early 70s. In a good way!

Fizbosshoes · 21/11/2021 21:01

There's a (presumably private) school in Chelsea which has a uniform consisting of (what looks like) corduroy britches. They look really old fashioned.

XenoBitch · 21/11/2021 21:06

I used to be in the Goth scene, and there were a fair few people who looked like they were on their way home from a Victorian funeral.
