Do you ever see people who look as though they've stepped out of history?

This is something I always notice in Glasgow, but I can't put my finger on why.

Today I saw a man wearing a proper tweed suit, shirt, tie, coat, and hat! He also had what I can only describe as an old fashioned face.

DS science teacher looks like he is from the 1930s. Not his clothes, just his face.

nannybeach · 21/11/2021 16:03

Perhaps you have "Charles Bonnet" syndrome

Comedycook · 21/11/2021 16:04

Ha! There's a mum at my DC's school who looks like she's stepped straight out of 2001....down to the poker straight streaky blonde hair

Cattenberg · 21/11/2021 16:11

At sixth form college, there was a guy who looked like a Cavalier. He had long, wavy hair and knee-high buckled boots. I never got to speak to him, but always wondered why he dressed like it was 1645. I now suspect he was a goth.

icelolly12 · 21/11/2021 16:12

I love seeing people who still take pride in their appearance and take care over their dress sense. That elderly man sounds adorable and yes I occasionally see elderly men like that too. I do think we have descended into an unkempt nation of loungewear, and off topic but all teenagers seem to dress more or less exactly the same - where are the emos, goths etc?!

Callcat · 21/11/2021 16:12

I was wearing black docs and a parka the other day, and very 90s jeans. Didn't think anything of it until I looked down at myself and saw a teen from the 90s. I felt like a vintage characture of myself! My ex MIL is sort of stuck in history. She still has bleach blonde back combed beehive and even though she's the right age to have 'retained' that style, and actually wears fairly trendy 'now' clothes, it's sort of more than that. It looks like she's time hopped and is just trying get on with it and to blend into this decade. She just had the face and demeanour of the 60s/70s somehow!

PriamFarrl · 21/11/2021 16:30

All the teens now look fresh from the 90s.

LandCleve · 21/11/2021 16:38

Someone I volunteer with dresses like how I imagine Lady Chatterly’s lover dressed! It helps that he’s also a gardener - and very good looking:)

@Letsallscreamatthesistene what sort of clothes do you wear?

QueeniesCroft · 21/11/2021 16:39

When I lived in Glasgow (around 1990-ish) there was a man who I met sometimes walking around at night- he would sort of appear out of the mist or around a corner and frighten the life out of me. He always wore a plaid( kilty thing sometimes called a great kilt I think, with the end going over the shoulder) with a very old-fashioned loose-fitting shirt and his long hair made him look a bit wild. The first time I saw him, I was sure he was a ghost, until his long-haired German shepherd came trotting along behind him.
I always saw him in more-or-less the same area (bottom end of Sauchiehall Street) and I never spoke to him but he seemed perfectly harmless, just sort of out of place (although right enough, if you are going to be wearing a Braveheart-style get-up, then the middle of Glasgow would be the very place for it). I did occasionally wonder if he was cold though, with only the shirt and plaid on.

That’s the modern equivalent of the ladies who were still rocking perms and Princess Di haircuts in the 90s. That said, I do still have my GHDs, just in case the look comes back. Also, does she drive a white BMW or Audi? Because that always seems to go with that haircut.

Harry Maguire looks like a time traveller to me. I could imagine finding an old sepia photo of him in a slightly crumpled suit in a book about Victorian miners or something.

QueeniesCroft · 21/11/2021 16:43

Like this, but no hat!

Do you ever see people who look as though they've stepped out of history?
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/11/2021 16:45

@landcleve if you have a look at Other Stories and Olive, thats the kind of style. So sort of 1940's-ish.

0blio · 21/11/2021 16:45

I always think the actor Eddie Marsan has a very old fashioned face. He looks like he's from the 1940s or 50s.

mogkat · 21/11/2021 16:46

Yes!
There's a man I see around town where I live quite often who looks like he's stepped straight out of the 50's, straight out of the movie Grease.
Full on very shiny slicked quiff, the turn up jeans, everything about him.

I read this as “suspect he was a ghost” and was lost in admiration of your calm.
Twospaniels · 21/11/2021 16:52

@squashyhat

Kai from Strictly. Not only does he look old for his age he looks old-fashioned. Like someone from the 50s.
Yes! When he was introduced at the beginning of Strictly as being 26 yrs old, I couldn’t believe it. He looks about 35 and definitely has an old fashioned face.
Kite22 · 21/11/2021 16:53

@EventOfTheSeason

I've never seen anyone who totally looks the part but I think Harry Kane has an old fashioned face.
Totally see what you mean here

Also Jacob Rees Mogg is an obvious public figure example

There is a man I see occassionally in our local High Street who always dresses a bit like a spiv from the 40s - wears what he presumably perceives as a 'snappy' brown suit, he wears spats, and a trilby. First time I saw him I assumed he was on his way to a fancy dress or theatre, but I've seen him several times now just doing his shopping. I'd guess he is late 40s maybe 50 yrs old.. Does stand out a bit.

please tell me he looked as good as Jamie Fraser
Slashbackblazer · 21/11/2021 16:59

I always thought that the former chancellor, Nigel Lawson, would have looked at home in a costume from the Georgian era; breeches and a long jacket with a high collar and a large muslin collar or cravat. His son Dominic has a bit of the same look.

Twospaniels · 21/11/2021 17:00

There used to be - maybe still is - a lady in Bedford who dresses in full victoriana every day and goes to town etc on the bus.

When I was younger there was a man who was obviously stuck in his teen/20’s style, big black quiff and DA, leather biker jacket, ankle grazer jeans and blue suede shoes.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 21/11/2021 17:00

I watch Bernadette Banber videos on YouTube. She dresses quite Edwardian. But she's a fashion historian. I love her hair, can never recreate it. youtube.com/channel/UCSHtaUm-FjUps090S7crO4Q

BalloonSlayer · 21/11/2021 17:00

There was someone in the rugby match that was on telly yesterday who I thought was on leave from the Western Front. It was his hair and moustache but he had the Harry Kane old fashioned face too.

Badbadbunny · 21/11/2021 17:02

There was a sixth former at my son's school who wore a deer stalker hat with 3 piece tweed suit throughout both his sixth form years. Apparently, there was nothing else "weird" about him, he wasn't an oddball, and was "normal" in all other ways. For some reason, he just wanted to wear that kind of outfit.

Slashbackblazer · 21/11/2021 17:02

And of course there are all the Peaky Blinder inspired lads dressing in tweed waistcoats and flat caps.

coatsaremyonetruelove · 21/11/2021 17:03

There’s a man who walks along Byres Rd in full Highland rigout with a collie. It snapped quite suddenly at a friend once. Wonder if it’s the same guy.
