Woman given restraining order for ‘feeding horse’..

Stath · 19/11/2021 14:17

There are frequent threads on MN about idiotic behaviour by the public when it comes to other people’s animals.
I’m very pleased to read that this woman has been taken to court although I wonder if she’d have been made to pay vets’ costs/compensation if her acts had killed or made the horse require treatment?
Not sure this will serve as a deterrent to many people though who have the mindset of ‘a carrot/potato/handful of grass won’t do any harm’ but it’ll hopefully do some good.

My sister has had to explain to so many people not to feed her horses and ended up having to double fence them so people can’t get close enough. She tells that then giving her horses apples and carrots is like her coming to the park and feeding their kids sweets. They still don’t seem to get it!

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:03

Fencing is pointless because people still throw their crisp packets etc into the field.

Frankzappa22 · 20/11/2021 09:08

Thank you to those who have informatively replied regarding why not to feed other people’s horses. I absolutely never do myself, as I know its a bad thing but don’t really know why. However my husband sometimes does and won’t always listen when I tell him to stop. So the helpful answer above informs me, so that I can tell him why he needs to stop and hopefully now he will. It’s why I opened the thread. So those just giving a shitty response to the person who asked why it’s dangerous to feed horses grass, you are just as irresponsible as people who do the feeding if you can’t be bothered to give a polite and helpful response to a genuine question

Platax · 20/11/2021 09:10

@gogohm

Perhaps part of the answer is ensuring horses aren't running free where the public are - I don't like being ran at by horses but unfortunately the owners seem to think it's acceptable ditto cows ... the rights of way date back hundreds of years, they have had a long time to fence them!
If you don't like being run at by horses and cows, maybe don't use paths through fields where you can see that they are there?

No, I'm not irresponsible. Your dh is. Why not ask him why he feels the need to feed someone else's animal. Does he feed cows? Dogs? Cats?
Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:14

And my response was perfectly valid. Amazing how people who don't know anything about horses just don't listen to those who do.

Mrs Porter, 67, told magistrates: “I thought he looked quite sad"

Well, he did have a long face. Boom boom! 😁

Someone rang the rspca about my neighbours pony 'who was out in the snow with no rug on'. Pony is a Dartmoor with a thick woolly coat. Rspca obviously did nothing but it was a pita for her.

But your response is the equivalent of a toddler asking ‘why’ and your answer being ‘because’. For someone who isn’t horsey, putting aside they shouldn’t be feeding horses, they see a horse eat grass, they assume grass is safe, so give them a load of grass clippings. A non horsey person won’t know that grass clippings ferment and can cause death. For some reason in this country, as highlighted on previous threads, many people believe it is acceptable to feed horses. I’ve had people come up to me when I’m hacking ask I can give my lad a polo, I am always polite and say no and explain why I am saying no.
Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:28

No - my response was even a handful of grass can cause horses to run to walkers thinking they are going to get fed, then they can fight and kick out which can be a problem.

Not sure why that's even in the least bit controversial.

Polkadotties · 20/11/2021 09:32

@Kikkomam apologies I have confused you with a different poster

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 20/11/2021 09:32

@Iggly

In the nicest possible way, if you don't know enough about horses to understand the above you should admire from afar and leave well alone

The poster literally says that she wouldn’t feed a horse.

The poster asked ASKED why feeding them grass was an issue.

Why is it a problem for people to politely ask for explanations on something they dint understand??

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:33

It's not a problem. It's a problem when people answer and they don't like the answer.

👏👏👏

I’ve never understood the attitude of refusing to give a clear explanation, but still expecting people to take your word for it and just follow through in what you said just because YOU a said it.

On an Internet forum where you have no idea who is who Confused

I mean if you are such an expert, just say, explain, tell people why, educate them. Just like someone did it for you as some point.

EtonMessy · 20/11/2021 09:36

Good!! Seeing our childhood pony in the agonising throes of colic is something I’ll never forget!!

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:39

All the explanations on here have been perfectly clear 🤣🤣

Newnameforabit · 20/11/2021 09:39

On the plus side, this post has highlighted and educated people why you shouldn't feed horses, so thats got to be a good thing

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:39

Who hasn't? Have you even read the thread?

Polkadotties · 20/11/2021 09:42

@PerfectlyUnsuitable unfortunately this is very common in the horsey world, lots of people were riding from day dot and were immersed into the equestrian world from birth, they forget that many people have to learn what they just take as common knowledge.
My livery yard is also a riding school. We have young helpers at the weekend, an older livery in her 70s (around horses since young child) gave a young helper a dressing down as a bridle hadn’t been hung up with the reins tied through the throatlash. She refers to them as idiot children with no sense. Of course they don’t have much horse sense, it needs to be taught!

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 09:44

Horses are the only animals people feel they can feed. People don't randomly feed people's dogs, despite not being specifically told that they mustn't. It's weird

Well, she knows how to hang a bridle up now!

In the nicest possible way, if you don't know enough about horses to understand the above you should admire from afar and leave well alone.

To be fair you didn't even explain the reason why grass cuttings should the fed.

Cut grass begins to ferment very quickly. This causes gasses to be released in a horses stomach that's can lead to colic and ultimately a painful death in some cases or very traumatic and expensive surgery.

Cut grass is also far easier to gorge/eat quickly so even pre fermentation can cause colic as horses are greedy and a grazed paddock means they have to work fairly hard and trickle feed their grass. They can't manage large amounts of food in a short time.

Feeding a handful of freshly picked grass is unlikely to be harmful to a horses health however DC's pony cannot be fed by hand at all. He becomes nippy very quickly and that would make him dangerous for a child to handle. In a field situation he'd kick and bite the others if feeding was happening around a gate or in a fence line, fights could be caused, injuries from fences etc

Hoppinggreen · 20/11/2021 09:46

But people shouldn’t have to explain why
Never feed anyone else’s animals, it’s very very simple.
No need for education or justification at all.
On a previous thread as someone else mentioned there were people explaining exactly why it was ok for them to feed someone else’s horses “ but I only feed them xyz” or “I’m careful not to do abc”
It doesn’t matter. If it’s not your animal or you don’t have the owners permission just DO NOT DO IT.
Horse owners don’t have a responsibility to educate anyone

Literally loads of people have said this!

Quite.
