Horrendous and scary weather

Just need to share. I am in Vancouver on the 8th floor in a condo that faces the Pacific Ocean.

It is absolutely pouring rain and has been all night. They call it an atmospheric river. It is also extremely windy. I am afraid of trees blowing down.

All the roads to the Interior of BC are closed due to mud slides. Some people have been stuck in between two slides. They are OK but obviously scared. The authorities don't know how to get them out yet. Maybe airlift or train (there are tracks nearby). There are about 50 cars.

Some cars were also caught up in the slides.

So so awful for those poor people. Just hoping they are safe.

Sounds terrifying. Hope the people who are trapped get out ok.

ljc111985 · 15/11/2021 18:56

Oh goodness this is awful! BC is one of my favourite places 😩 I really hope they can help people soon

LoveFall · 15/11/2021 18:58

I am lucky to be safe and warm. I have travelled those highways hundreds of times. I am most worried about the people in the cars that were caught in the slides.

It is remote and rugged terrain.

The wind is getting worse. I have had to bring anything loose on our balcony in as things are starting to fly around.

I can't lift the table and DH is out so I am just praying it doesn't get worse.

I should record the sound of the wind whistling and sell it for sound effects!

Would you believe last week we had a real tornado in our neighbourhood that brought trees down right outside our building?

The weather gods are having quite the party.

Now the entire City of Merritt in the interior has been ordered to evacuate as the sewage/wastewater plant has been inundated and as they said you can't run a city if no one can go to the bathroom.

Thousands of people and the nearest city is a good hour and a half away (Kamloops).

So awful for these people whose lives are being so affected.

so scary, OP. I"m in SF Bay Area (California) and we had this a few weeks ago, . It was like nothing I've known such noise, wind howling and so much relentless rain. I believe we had 5 inches in 24 hours - 10 times what we normally get in 3 months!

Stay safe. Prayers for those in danger, and hoping for quick rescues.

Leftbutcameback · 15/11/2021 19:48

It sounds terrifying OP, glad you're safe. Canada has had some awful weather / hazards this year with the heat dome and fires as well. Sending good wishes to everyone

LoveFall · 15/11/2021 22:12

Canadian Forces helicopters are apparently starting air evacuations of the people, including children and babies, who are stuck between slides. Still scary as the wind is still howling here with huge gusts.

Apparently people can be heard yelling and honking horns down the banks at some points. They were actually caught in the slides.

The rain here has stopped. Hopefully the wind will get lost soon.

It sounds frightening, I’d not heard of an atmospheric river - is this unusual weather for Vancouver Island? Is it climate change related? I hope they can rescue the people caught by the mudslides, I can’t believe it’s not on UK news??

LoveFall · 15/11/2021 22:47

I had never heard of an atmospheric river before either. It rains here for sure but this was astonishing.

I just saw footage of a huge runaway barge that is washing up on English Bay beach, or huge beach fringing the downtown.

Really shocking to be honest.

Our huge beach

Whyamistilltired · 15/11/2021 23:04

Sounds so frightening OP, hope it soon dies down and everyone is ok.

Shocking that anyone could doubt climate change, it's happening before our very eyes, so scary.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/11/2021 00:34

Well Canada is getting more than it's fair share of weather...

Seafog · 16/11/2021 00:47

Hello from Victoria, it's been wild here too, luckily we still have power, almost everywhere around us is out.
These winds are the insane, and not slowing down!

LoveFall · 16/11/2021 01:25

We are also lucky to have power right now also.

My husband was out for groceries today and could j no it get from the UBC area to Dunbar due to road closures. The power was out all over.

The wind is still howling. I just wish it would stop.

The weather does seem to have changed in the Pacific Northwest, I lived there for 5 years and never got extreme weather, though storms were common on Vancouver island and down the pacific coast

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 16/11/2021 02:02

Also in Vancouver. Well thankfully it’s passed. I had to help one stranded car stuck in water today and the mall had no power so some poor souls were having to tell every person arriving it’s ’cash only’ today.
I saw a huge amount of accident after maths over the weekend… more than normal anyway given the very questionable standard of driving here.

Somebodylikeyew · 16/11/2021 02:04

It must be so scary. Makes you realise how tiny we really are in the face of nature.

AtlasPine · 16/11/2021 02:11

It sounds biblical. The whole of Vancouver cut off from the rest of Canada.

How are you now?

Onesailwait · 16/11/2021 02:18

How are you holding up?. I'm in Sooke on the island, we have been pretty much cut off. My husband drives a big Ram truck & the water at the bottom of our drive was up to nearly the hood. Still no power & my basement is completely flooded. Luckily we have a wood fire & we can cook on the BBQ.

momager1 · 16/11/2021 02:21

hello from ontario. Have been watching it on the weather network all day and I hope everyone stays safe. It is truly Awful. Hopefully the winds die down for you soon!!

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/11/2021 02:22

How long is it expected to last @LoveFall?

fallfallfall · 16/11/2021 02:29

kamloops is fine and welcoming evacuees

LoveFall · 16/11/2021 02:45

I am glad everyone on here is OK. Hello to Kamloops, I'm a Kam High grad..

The wind is quieter now with the odd gust. I hope it stays that way and the water starts to subside.

I wonder if all the stranded were helicoptered out. It is not very clear. At least search and rescue are there with supplies if anyone is stuck for another night.

This right up there with the awful weather I have seen, maybe worse. Epic, biblical rain.

I hope everyone stays ok!

We are in the BC interior, and had a storm blow through this afternoon. Currently sitting here without power 🙁. The wind is still blowing, but it's calmed down a lot now.
We used to live in the North West of England, directly overlooking the Irish Sea, so used to high winds!!
