Would it be possible in this day and age to keep a huge news story private?

Trying not to give a dramatic misleading title to this post and don't want to be disrespectful to the queen who I have a lot of respect for....

But...

There is rumours circulating that she has died and the news will be released on Monday. Now I'm thinking this is just conspiracy theories and there's been plenty of them about her before but would it be possible to keep something like this quiet? In a house with so many staff and the fact that there is procedures that are put in place right away (I know someone who used to cover the duty phone on rotation for when senior members of the royal family pass away) you'd think it would be leaked pretty quick?

OP posts:

😂

SirensofTitan · 14/11/2021 14:59

Why would it need to be kept quiet? Do you think that everyone would be running around not knowing what to do and needing time to decide? Of course they wouldn't

if there is such a rumour it belongs with all those ones about army convoys on motorways during covid and the one from the poster whose son or other relative assured her that Prince Philip had died weeks if not months before he did

HeartsAndClubs · 14/11/2021 14:59

And don’t they kill off Will smith every few months or so? Usually in a skiing accident isn’t it?

SirensofTitan · 14/11/2021 15:01

@ronfa

isn't the conference today due to COP21?
Only 6 years late GrinGrin
DickMabutt73962 · 14/11/2021 15:01

@Mrsjayy

I mean how many times did Prince Philip secretly die ?
Do you remember when yahoo news accidentally reported him dying because people got wind of an important meeting to announce something about him?

And it ended up just being his retirement? 😂

ronfa · 14/11/2021 15:01

@SirensofTitan 😂

CreepySpider · 14/11/2021 15:02

If the queen had died overnight, it would have been announced at 8am this morning and there would be a board outside the Palace. Likewise if it was in the early hours, it would have been announced at midday.

I’m sure the queen is alive and well considering her age.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 14/11/2021 15:02

I'd wait until its been confirmed by Gav on WhatsApp 🤣

CreepySpider · 14/11/2021 15:02

I'd wait until its been confirmed by Gav on WhatsApp 🤣
Gav’s quite busy though so he might take a while to answer.

I know poor old duffer they had him dead and almost buried!

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 14/11/2021 15:03

I think they could for a short while but I don’t see what would be gained. There is no reason to keep it hush hush once the family are informed.

HeartsAndClubs · 14/11/2021 15:06

There is a Conspiracy theory that Nelson Mandela actually died about 8 months before he did…

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 14/11/2021 15:07

Well, the death of her father or grandfather (can’t remember which) was allegedly delayed… and I though Charles looked very upset today but he’s a former soldier so…

I think it highly unlikely they would hold it off for a whole 24hrs. Read ‘Tower Bridge Is Down’ (Google it…)

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 14/11/2021 15:08

Correction - ‘London Bridge is Down’

oakleaffy · 14/11/2021 15:16

@ViceLikeBlip

I really can't see why this would be true. There is a very clear procedure they will follow when she does die (😭😭) so there really wouldn't be anything to be gained by withholding the information (beyond a few hours to inform all close family)
This. Why would the news of HMTQ need to be kept secret? My family are Republicans but respect The Queen for her dedication. Can’t say the same for Andrew and Harry Et al.
ABCeasyasdohrayme · 14/11/2021 15:17

@WaterBottle123

The amount of people on here who are related to, or friends with, people who have access to top secret information, and jeprodises their job in order to tell the op, who then proceeds to plaster it all over the internet is astounding.
icedcoffees · 14/11/2021 15:18

Wasn't there a similar thread to this last year because some random poster realised a lot of newsreaders happened to be wearing black one morning? Grin

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 14/11/2021 15:19

Why would they delay the announcement though? What's the point of waiting until Monday? Also, it would be one thing to just not announce it for 24hrs or so, but another to actually lie to the public and say she has hurt her back. No, she's not dead.

Imagine if your death had to be announced to the nation by Boris Johnson though......Sad

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 14/11/2021 15:19

@WaterBottle123

Lol, yes!
starfishmummy · 14/11/2021 15:20

The only possible delay I can imagine would be while they make sure all of the family are told.

AutumnOrange · 14/11/2021 15:20

Surely the op is just asking if it would be possible, in this day and age, to keep a major event secret? They aren’t saying it has happened.

megletthesecond · 14/11/2021 15:21

From a crowd control and security point of view there may be a reason to keep it quiet.
Lots of servicemen, frail ex servicemen and their families in Central London this morning. Imagine the hoardes who would descend on London if the Queen had died.

I do not think she has passed away though.

SW1amp · 14/11/2021 15:22

I follow Price Charles’s press secretary on Instagram, and in the last few hours, she has posted some pics of them at a Remembrance Sunday event, plus some older pics of him wishing him a happy birthday

If the queen had died and Charles was about to be made king, there is not a chance she would be spending her day casually posting on Instagram!

Lockheart · 14/11/2021 15:22

There are always rumours circulating.

In theory yes it might be possible to keep this secret for a limited time, but she's the head of state and that has certain implications for the higher echelons of our countries function. Too many people would need to be told within a reasonable time. Family, government, the church, the media. Once more than a very few people know, it's no longer a secret.
