Muslims and back ache

Dilbertian · 13/11/2021 20:33

My back has seized up and I've spent the day alternating between lying on a heat pad and moving around trying to mobilise. And it got me wondering... are practicing Muslims who pray five times a day more or less prone to back problems? Do the movements of prayer help?

Yeah there is a proper form and emphasis in taking care in the movement. I don’t know of any research or insight into it, just my gran citing she doesn’t need exercise, god has her covered 5x a day already!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/11/2021 20:41

One way to find out…

thenightsky · 13/11/2021 20:42

Well, I do Pilates and a good shell stretch sorts me out... but I'm not religious Confused

FelicityBeedle · 13/11/2021 20:42

I think it’s an interesting question! It’s quite a deliberate movement so not dissimilar to yoga in some ways

Why do PP think this this thread is weird? When regular yoga movement is shown to have benefit, not that much of a leap to wonder about other sequence of regular movement in religions? Like Taoists have tai chi.

itcomesandgoesinwaves · 13/11/2021 20:45

Yes. Catholics also have very strong knees from all the standing up sitting down.

Hmm Hmm Hmm

TravisFountain · 13/11/2021 20:45

We use magic carpets.

Porfre · 13/11/2021 20:45

Theres certain positions.
If gor whatever reason you cant pray in the normal form. You can stay sitting throughout on the ground.

My mum cant sit on the ground because of her multiple health issues. Knee pains.
She prays sitting in the chair

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/11/2021 20:46

It’s us similar to the child pose, isn’t it? That’s supposed to help with back problems.

SunsetOnTheHorizon · 13/11/2021 20:47

Not sure what is so weird about the question!

Op has linked backache with movement or lack of and wants to know if Muslims who are praying 5 times a day, therefore kneeling and prostrating a lot, suffer from back ache or not?

I would like to add, my two sets of grandparents have a list of ailments but back ache isn't one of them. At the grand old age of 80 they are still prostrating with thier head on the floor.

Not sure if any scientific evidence has ever been collected, you would need to survey a lot of us to form a bigger picture obviously.

Hope your back feels better soon

FissionMailed · 13/11/2021 20:48

It'll be the Buddhists that'll have the best backs I bet.
Good posture.

Westcott313 · 13/11/2021 20:48

I pray fives times a day. I still get back ache from bad posture.

It's still stretching to a certain degree so I guess it helps.

Ozanj · 13/11/2021 20:51

In ancient times Muslim tribes (like Hindu ones) were warrior ones - the prayers (and dances) were designed to keep the young and able fit enough to win the war. For example if you give experienced Gujarati Dandiya player a sword or machete they could cause some serious damage

Clun · 13/11/2021 20:51

As an atheist, I don’t believe in back pain.

It’s all not in the mind.

I mean, my Catholic relatives all have quite shit knees and hips and we often joke that it’s down to the kneeling, so I think that makes sense!

We've no reason to believe the OP is a troll or has any agenda so we've removed the troll hunting posts.

tunainatin · 13/11/2021 21:03

Hmmm, we'll I'm Muslim and I don't have any back problems so there's your scientific evidence 😁

tunainatin · 13/11/2021 21:03

Though seriously, I think the physical movements are beneficial.

I wondered this recently, how fit prayer must keep you. It’s physically demanding.
