Odd question to those of you who have dogs

Question: Do your dogs follow your own sleep habits? In that do they usually wake when you do or are they barking at 3am for no apparent reason? Is 'sleep training' also part of general dog training?

Mine follow my own sleeps habits (curled into my back)

Any slight indication of awakeness means the two fuckers right in my face staring at me demanding breakfast Grin

thereinmadnesslies · 13/11/2021 20:03

Mine sleep on my bed, and generally they come to bed when I do and they are happy to sleep until I’m ready to get up.

FindingMeno · 13/11/2021 20:04

Our dog only rarely asks to get up earlier.

Mine follows our sleep habits, goes to bed 10pm(ish) then up at 7am and would sleep through a hurricane!

She sleeps right in between DH & I, it’s a good job she’s only small!

Dancingonmoonlight · 13/11/2021 20:06

Ours sleeps until we wake. As soon as he hears up walking around, he starts barking.
He did go through a phase of waking up at 4am. It went on for approx ten nights. Thankfully he then resumed sleeping through the night.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2021 20:07

I have a greyhound, and they are known to sleep 18 hours a day. She only wakes in the night to ask to get under the duvet.

TokyoSushi · 13/11/2021 20:07

Yes, sleeps when we sleep, any slight signal that we're awake though and so is he!

3WildOnes · 13/11/2021 20:07

Mine is pretty lazy. He goes up when I do but normally stays in (my) bed until about 9am.

skyblueone · 13/11/2021 20:09

Mine pretty much follows mine..she sleeps on my bed though so that's probably why, she knows when bedtime is.

Thinkbiglittleone · 13/11/2021 20:09

Ours comes upstairs when we do, she is quite until we get up, then she jumps all over our heads. I'm not sure if she is actually asleep as she's outside the room, but she quiet.

And yes a touch of sleep training, we crate trained and she did need to be helped to realise crying isn't going to give her possible attention,

RabitWhole · 13/11/2021 20:09

Ours goes in a pen at night, we put in a bowl of water and his bed, he goes in when we go to bed and gets up when we do. Very very rarely he is awake in the night and will whine to go for a wee, but he sleeps right through 99.9% of the time

Cherrysoup · 13/11/2021 20:09

He follows my habits. He then sleeps with my dh on days he’s coming off night shift, so may have been with me all night then with him til midday.

PragmaticWench · 13/11/2021 20:09

We sleep trained ours, plus she sleeps downstairs. Her natural inclination is to rise with the sun, or go mad when we wake, so we used a gradual technique of training her to be quiet downstairs until we go down.

MIL's dogs are little buggers who wake the house at 5:30 every morning. No training there and they rule the roost.

MancMum2000 · 13/11/2021 20:09

More or less same as ours overnight. He takes himself off to bed at about 10 every night, we follow about an hour later. He likes a lie in so will stay in bed as long as someone is there, but generally gets up when everyone else does. Occasionally barks at foxes in the garden overnight but it’s rare, only if he hasn’t had enough exercise in the day.

Simonjt · 13/11/2021 20:10

A mix, our dog is a lazy pup who loves his sleep, he goes to bed with my husband who is usually in bed by 9:30, he then gets up anywhere between 8am and 10am, although his record is 2pm!

Babamamananarama · 13/11/2021 20:11

Mine is a lazy bugger. He'll be asleep in the evening by 7pm, we have to wake him up for a late wee and to go upstairs. He sleeps in his bed in our room. And he won't get out of bed in the morning generally until I'm up and about, which has been quite a bit after everyone else for a while as I'm recovering from a stem cell transplant.

3teens2cats · 13/11/2021 20:17

They like routine and predictability so naturally fit in with our usual sleep pattern. Ours can be disturbed and occasionally bark in the night if something spooks them or if things are very different. For example when one of the teens accidentally left on all the lights on downstairs overnight or when a neighbour was playing Madonna really loudly at 3am. But usually he picks up on the queues we are about to go to bed and goes to the back door ready for the last wee, then snuggles up and sleeps until we come down in the morning. I never sleep past 7:30/8am even on the weekend so lie ins aren't an issue.

Quickchangeartiste · 13/11/2021 20:18

My 2 have amazing body clocks, and, especially in the case of the younger one, likes to wake us up at the same time every day, workday or weekend; usually about 5 minutes before alarm time.
However , they can also tell which days they have me at home and which days are dog walker days, and are more persistent in waking me on ‘my’ days.
That said , they generally sleep the same hours as we do, and fairly quietly. If they wake up, there’s generally a good reason ( someone trying the back door; next doors cat crossing the lawn; a fox crying 3 miles away…)

kitcat15 · 13/11/2021 20:20

Goes to bed with me....gets up with me ....v v rarely needs a night time wee

mayblossominapril · 13/11/2021 20:20

Sleeps well but does bark if they hear something and they think we should know!

VladmirsPoutine · 13/11/2021 20:20

Is there any training involved wrt sleep? It seems everyone's dog somehow just 'gets it'. But is there any training? I'm asking because we are thinking about a dog - I'm not necessarily for it so I told my family I won't for a second entertain a barking dog at the dead of night.

Ours sleep on our bed, so yes they won't stir until one of us does. Our older dog sometimes doesn't want to get up for quite some time after we have got up as she is not usually bothered about breakfast either. We go to bed late ( around 1am) and they come up with us then.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 13/11/2021 20:25

Mostly they follow ours. Ddog1 is an old lady now sho she sometimes needs to go out in the night but she doesn't bark, just gets up and nuzzles my cheek and I wake up and take her down.

If I'm late to bed though she takes herself off to bed at 11, looking most disapproving. She sleeps in my room so I get the stink eye when I come up late.

Ddog2 is out like a light at 10 whether we're up or not. He likes to sleep in the hall so has his bed out there and about quarter to 10, he whines at the door, goes out to pee then collects up his toys.

He goes round the house picking up his ball and his rope pull and his Teddy and takes them to bed with him. We do not go to bed without Teddy. Ever.

MapleMay11 · 13/11/2021 20:26

Two of mine have their own schedule and would happily be roaming the fields at 3am if allowed. They're both very active working dogs. The third is incredibly lazy and would prefer to transfer from bed to sofa and back again. They never bark during the night but none of them are particularly vocal breeds.

Nyxly · 13/11/2021 20:27

Mainly ours. Though one is almost 6 months so not always great. But getting there.

The 2 year old will sleep as long as whoevers bed she is in.
