Tesco Club Card - late to the party?

leafygarden42 · 13/11/2021 07:55

I have only just downloaded the app onto my phone. Usually shop in Aldi, but went to Tesco yesterday to pick up a few bits.

Anyone who uses the clubcard etc does it really save you as much money as they seem to advertise? And what bargains have you had that I need to know about?

Thanks

Yes it does.
I do online shopping and the discounts are very good, sometimes half price.
If you have Tesco mobile don’t forget to link it to your account for more vouchers.

Whitefire · 13/11/2021 08:08

The offers are generally the same that you would get anywhere else, the difference being you only get them if you have a clubcard. So if you have forgotten it or don't want one you pay full price.

As with any offers only get it if you actually want/ need it. So yesterday I needed Ribena, it was an absolute bonus it was on clubcard prices.

Sometimes they have clothes on discount if you use your clubcard.

FissionMailed · 13/11/2021 08:13

It's not anywhere near as good as it was.

Few years ago you could save clubcard points and you could get vouchers etc but they did a double up scheme. £20 in vouchers would be worth £40 to spend on whatever. They used to do it around November so you could go buy a shit ton of Christmas stuff for, effectively, half price.

These days you get the big old "club card price" on the shelf fronting to catch people's eyes. People then buy things they didn't want when they walked in, making Tesco Extra cash. Clever really.

I quite like the Tesco offers. And the Clubcard voucher deals. Have been using Hotels.com for nights away with them, really easy to do and great value. You triple the value of your points when exchanging fit hotel stay vouchers.
Sainsbury’s annoys me cause you need to actually use the app to see what they are giving you and then some you only get if you are using their scan and shop.

leafygarden42 · 13/11/2021 08:53

Ta - thanks for the info

I didn't realise the £10 meal deal was now only £10 with a clubcard until I realised that I'd paid over £20 for it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Eltonsglasses · 13/11/2021 09:01

The club card deals is a recent thing, they changed form just having things on a deal generally to now you can only get it if you have a clubcard. The club card will add up points and you get vouchers throughout the year to spend. Not worth it if you rarely shop there but if you are a slave to Tesco like me you could end up with a decent few quid off your shopping.

terriblyangryattimes · 13/11/2021 09:04

If you use Google pay (probably the same with apple etc) you can upload your clubcard to that so you're never without it if you don't have your purse with you. There is also a clubcard app where you can switch the points for vouchers. We sometimes do a cheap and cheerful dinner out at a Hungry Horse pub for example, where 50p worth of points turns into £1.50 of vouchers to be used on food.

Notgoingonholiday · 13/11/2021 09:05

We get Tesco delivery every week so always have decent amount of vouchers. I always use on the reward scheme where you get far more value. Can't remember the last time we paid money to go to the cinema! And this week I ordered new plates from Denby and used clubcard vouchers towards that too.

Eltonsglasses · 13/11/2021 09:06

They also do a pay plus debit card which you just top up and you get clubcard points when you shop elsewhere, it's not as many as you get in Tesco but it all adds up

saraclara · 13/11/2021 09:08

I use the points for meals out, zoo trips and other days out, etc. Saves a fortune. If you buy your petrol at Tesco you accumulate points without any effort at all.

I don't know if they still partner with them, but I booked a holiday with Intrepid, and after paying the deposit, I discovered I could pay towards the balance with Clubcard points. That saved me £400. I was amazed.

saraclara · 13/11/2021 09:09

Can't remember the last time we paid money to go to the cinema!

Ha! That's what we used to be like with family meals out!

leafygarden42 · 13/11/2021 09:41

@torquewench

Ha! That's exactly why I started chatting to the Tesco staff member - I put the side dish and pudding back - and kept the wine Grin - keeping my priorities straight. But yeah - the deal for a tenner seems quite good. And she said you can get two side dishes if you don't want a pudding.

I had thought you have to pay something each month to be a Tesco club card member, but I got that wrong - that's for something else entirely.

@Eltonsglasses

Might have a look at the debit card thing as well. We had a Tesco loan out years ago when I bought my car - and the rates etc on it were pretty good.

My credit card is a Tesco one. So I get points when I use that, too.

The trading points for three times their value is by far the best way to use them. I used them to pay for my car breakdown membership last year.

SugaryYuck · 13/11/2021 10:36

I have Clubcard plus which you pay £7.99 per month for but it gives you two 'big shops' per month on which you save 10% from everything, and you also save 10% on clothing whenever. I quite like F&F for the dc, and I strategically shop at Tesco twice a month for the stuff I can't get in Aldi and use the big shops for that. But generally Aldi is still cheaper (maybe because there's less choice) and I shop there the other two weeks of the month. I always save more than the monthly subscription

reluctantbrit · 13/11/2021 11:00

We have one for. two reasons, most petrol stations around us are in connection with Tesco so a full tank really adds up the points.

Also, there is. a large Tesco en route to DD's stable, we stop for bits for. lunch. or a full shop on the way back home if we don't have the time to do our normal supermarket run.

We normally collect the vouchers and. spend them on their deals. We got a year's membership. with Cadw for it this year, zoo. tickets another year.

The clubcard offers are. good value but I don't go out and buy extra, it's more a. bonus if there is money off.

cherrypiepie · 13/11/2021 13:42

Yes it quite good. I stopped using it for years as data mining and felt tied and the vouchers weren't that great unless you spent A lot.

Now they have introduced the Clubcard deals I like it for Coke and gin mainly. We mostly shop at Aldi but have small Tesco 10 mins away and big Tesco that has clothes etc 20 mins away.

Also for the points are a bonus so I spend them on a rail card usually In the past have even used towards a cruise.

Although I only got the app as refused to spend full price in price do sausages

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 13/11/2021 13:47

I stopped shopping at Tesco as without club card prices are silly

Abd I don’t want to give my e-Mail and address and bombarded by marketing junk

So I’m out Grin

nosyupnorth · 13/11/2021 13:59

The points aren't bad but don't be fooled by the clubcard prices - they aren't the amazing deals they're made to look like, in many cases tesco will inflate the price of an item so they can then say 50% off for clubcard users but that 50% price is equal/only slightly cheaper than other shops.

I’ve never had a marketing email from Tesco.

OP, I get the Delivery Saver and pay for it using vouchers. Means I get deliveries anytime, all year round basically for free.

Also had a channel tunnel trip a few years ago paid for with Clubcard vouchers.

Yes they collect data on where I shop and what I buy but I’m willing to pay that ‘price’ for the 75 hours a year odd it would take me to do a physical shop each week.

CurseofChristmas · 13/11/2021 14:32

I don't think it's that great. The club card offers.. you can usually get cheaper elsewhere without needing a card.
The old voucher scheme was so much better, I used to get my glasses for free every year Sad

Woeismethischristmas · 13/11/2021 14:38

I like club card points. I use them to pay my rac membership and have a lovely Denby pan collection. Triple points. I think Tesco works out good value if you shop online, I’m rural so it’s an hour and a half round trip plus shopping time so a £2 quid delivery fee seems like a bargain.

fruitpastille · 13/11/2021 14:45

I don't use the app but have had a clubcard and Tesco credit card for years. I exchange the points/vouchers for 3x the value in rewards. Until covid we used them annually to pay for our eurotunnel crossing. We also use them for pizza express, magazine subscriptions and whenever we go on a uk holiday I check to see if we can pay for local attractions with them. It just takes a bit of forward planning.

Floralnomad · 13/11/2021 14:53

I’ve had a Clubcard for years and I’ve never received anything from Tesco aside from coupons and vouchers and they don’t even send them now as it’s all online so I really don’t get the angst about being bombarded by marketing junk . In the past we used our vouchers for Merlin passes , had them for the whole family for years and never actually paid for one .
