Does anyone work for Costa? Can you tell me about the latte?

I was wondering what the brand standard is for a costa latte - to heat the glass or to not heat the glass.

I have noticed how absolutely random this is when ordering lattes and just wondered!

WHY is there so much sugar added? I had a chai latte yesterday and it was loaded with sugar

Fatgalslim · 12/11/2021 13:16

I don't think I've ever had my cup heated for any drink in Costa or any coffee place so I'd say it wasn't standard. I always ask for 80 degrees though as that's (allegedly) the hottest they can do for H&S reasons

Do you drink latte? It's in a glass

Suspect it's dependent on how recently the glass came out of the dishwasher

Why would it be?

I used to! Many years ago. I used to heat the glass personally.

Palavah · 12/11/2021 13:21

What do you mean?

rbe78 · 12/11/2021 13:22

Don't think I've ever noticed them warming the glass... as a PP said, if the glass has just come out of the dishwasher it will still be warm, so maybe that's why you sometimes have a warm glass?

Eltonsglasses · 12/11/2021 13:25

@Palavah

What do you mean?

I mean why would warming the glass be dependent on how long they have been out of the dishwasher?

Some people warm the glass, some don't.

I worked in Costa for years. Costa brand standard was to heat the latte glasses by filling them with water. I left 3 years ago and to be honest standards have definitely slipped in my old branch since then, so who knows now. The temperature of the milk was measured with probes in the jug. The max temp of the milk wasn't for health & safety but for the best milk.

No, I'm not talking about the glass being warm. I am talking about it being actively warmed.

Thank you. It was brand standard so either it's the older staff still doing it or it still is and some cba Grin

I do. The brand standard is for glasses to be heated

Eltonsglasses · 12/11/2021 13:29

Excellent, so it is just that some people are not doing it 'properly'

Although, most Costa machines now have heaters on the top.

Plus, with the amount of queues who has the time to put boiling water into a glass

BananaPB · 12/11/2021 13:31

I've seen both too.

By heat the glass you mean fill it with hot water and pour that water out right?

skintasabint · 12/11/2021 13:31

@Eltonsglasses

Tbh the amount of standards they have for the brand is ridiculous. The company as a whole is a disgrace which is why so many have left. It's probably new staff not knowing they have to do it

God knows, our local went from 5/6 staff during they busy hours to 3 so I'm surprised they have time to breathe Sad

They fill it 1/3 boiling water then empty it out just to heat the glass

Jerrysgonnabeacableboy · 12/11/2021 13:32

A chai latte is different though, it's likely to be a premixed powder which is highly sweetened.

mbb1 · 12/11/2021 13:32

We kept the glasses on top of the machine so they'll there would be some warmth from that. You fill the glasses at the same time as heating the milk. Any halfway decent barista can multi task.

skintasabint · 12/11/2021 13:33

@Eltonsglasses
It's awful. They've raised prices, yet cut everyone's hours. It's all to increase profits.

PumpkinCrumble · 12/11/2021 13:33

You were supposed to put boiling water in the glass while doing your shots of coffee. Then steam your milk. But this was over 10 years ago.

Eltonsglasses · 12/11/2021 13:33

@BananaPB

I've seen both too.

Yes, and in the same branches it's just a mix and match so it can't really be put down to whether the machine has a heater on top. I'm not complaining by the way, I don't care that much either way - just far too nosey for my own good Blush

skintasabint · 12/11/2021 13:35

@PumpkinCrumble don't forget you have to talk to the customer constantly or you'll get marked down in the Costa check 😂😂
