How to get an ice lolly to my mum in hospital?

husslebussle · 11/11/2021 17:04

My mum is in hospital. Only next of kin can visit and I can't get there until the weekend. She is craving a Calippo ice lolly and a bottle of lucozade. It looks like I may be able get one but not the other to her via Uber Eats - but are there any other companies that do small deliveries like this?

Ring a taxi firm in her area and ask if a driver would go to the shop then drop them off, offer to pay over the odds

Hobbitfeet32 · 11/11/2021 17:14

You could ring the kitchens. Occasionally they can get specific items in for people.

makelovenotpetrol · 11/11/2021 17:15

I mean you don't really. They can get ice cream though for patients.

Yes if there is a medically indicated need. Specific items need to be requested by someone's doctors for a good reason.

I am a dietitian and know very much how the system works and have on many occasions managed to get things in for patients. Not promising that they will but it’s worth a try.

I don't believe that for a second that you can get a lolly because someone fancies it that's ridiculous!!
Hobbitfeet32 · 11/11/2021 17:21

Ok @makelovenotpetrol you clearly know more than me

SmileyClare · 11/11/2021 17:21

Sorry your mum's in hospital. If she's able to communicate with ward staff, they can usually get Lucozade from the hospital vending machines or wheel your mum there in a chair (assuming she has some money or a card with her).?

Failing that, take a big bottle when you visit over the weekend and don't feel you've let her down. She'll be well looked after. X

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/11/2021 17:23

Our hospital shop are doing online orders to deliver to patients on the ward.
Hope she has a speedy recovery.

TSSDNCOP · 11/11/2021 17:24

Is there a shop in the foyer? Maybe if you call and pay over the phone they'd kindly run one up to the ward

As for you@Hobbitfeet32, shame on you for knowing your job better than ransom posters Wink

Justmuddlingalong · 11/11/2021 17:25

Can someone else on the ward get their family to pick them up if they're visiting sooner? Could she ask another patient?

Daisymclazy · 11/11/2021 17:27

Try beelivery.

negomi90 · 11/11/2021 17:27

if she's in a decent size city, deliveroo/just eat to the hospital ward. Decent sized places have grocery stores on their food delivery apps - lots of coops, morrisons and corner shops on near me.
Delivery apps will often deliver to hospital wards - I've had deliveries to them before.

TheBeesElbows · 11/11/2021 17:28

Others can't visit, but they can drop things of at the ward door. So get someone nearby to pop to the shop pick up what she needs/wants and drop it at the ward. They will pass it to her.

negomi90 · 11/11/2021 17:29

Also if you use an app, and get an extra thing of cholate for the nurses, it wouldn't go down badly.
Just to be clear your dm would still get it, even without bribing staff. Its just a nice thing to do.

PensionPuzzle · 11/11/2021 17:29

Could be worth just asking the staff on the off chance, I had a calippo from a hospital vending machine when I had my daughter (was nil by mouth but I think they felt sorry for me), so they may have the same machine?

PigeonLittle · 11/11/2021 17:31

I'd also ring a taxi firm and ask them to arrange, just say what you need and ask how much. Probably better after 7pm.

RestingPandaFace · 11/11/2021 17:33

Can you do Deliveroo from the nearest Co-op?

husslebussle · 11/11/2021 17:35

Just tried Deliveroo, but the hospital address isn't being accepted as valid Sad

SleighBells21 · 11/11/2021 17:37

Someone can drop it off at the ward door for her

floofycroissant · 11/11/2021 17:38

Co-op do 2 hour delivery but it's a minimum order of £15.

badlydrawnbear · 11/11/2021 17:41

I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere, but I work in a hospital and my colleagues sometimes order from deliveroo/ Uber eats etc for delivery to the hospital. They only deliver to the front entrance, someone needs to go and collect it and bring it to the ward, and that might not be possible for your mum.

TwinklyBranch · 11/11/2021 17:43

I would just take her one at the weekend and she can look forward to that. Don't be tying yourself in knots to get an ice lolly to a hospital just because she fancies one.

tocas · 11/11/2021 17:44

What hospital?

TweeBee · 11/11/2021 17:46

I'm also a dietitian (Hi, Hobbit! Having a little chuckle at doctors in charge of food) and agree if you have a good catering team you can get things such as this provided. Our trust does provide ice lollies when it's warm and if your mum was my patient OP I would certainly speak with them (you would need to ring switchboard and ask for catering department).
If you can speak to the ward they may have Lucozade there already for low blood sugars.
I'm working tomorrow in the North West but I don't want to be more specific - however if your mum is in that region I'm happy to see if she's at my hospital.
Hope all goes well for you and mum.
