How to get an ice lolly to my mum in hospital?

My mum is in hospital. Only next of kin can visit and I can't get there until the weekend. She is craving a Calippo ice lolly and a bottle of lucozade. It looks like I may be able get one but not the other to her via Uber Eats - but are there any other companies that do small deliveries like this?

Do they sell them in the canteen? The hospital I work in has a huge selection of ice lollies and ice creams in the canteen, it is a specialist cancer hospital though and ice lollies are great for when feeling sick which is probably why we have so many. Might be worth your mum asking a worker there?

Try shocal.

Or if there's a shop at the hospital they may do a delivery.

I’ve known hospital staff get ice lollies for patients, it’s not an unusual request, when people have had ops, they can often crave ice and refreshing things like that

Which hospital? I’m doubting it’s mine as there is an Asda right outside. But if it was I’d go!

AdditionalCharacter · 11/11/2021 18:51

Which hospital Op? I work near my local hospital, so could pop it up for her.

Bagelsandbrie · 11/11/2021 18:54

The hospital used to get my mum ice cream in little tubs when she was in there after having bowel cancer surgery. It’s worth asking the kitchen team.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/11/2021 18:59

If by any chance it’s Lewisham I’m happy to run it round there.

For people saying this won't happen, we've done lots of little things for our patients where possible. It was not unusual as a junior dr to go and buy particular drinks for patients from vending machines / go down to the kitchens for ice for water / get jelly or ice cream from the fridge if they want to. It's only human to want the odd treat and lots of patients are having a terrible time!

Have a chat with their nurse the next time you speak to them routinely. You might be able to meet them/a Porter at reception and they wouldn't mind running one up. The hospital canteen probably has a freezer with various ice creams in and they might include those particular ones which would mean you could buy it and drop it off at the ward entrance.

We are busy and it is a special request but I really wouldn't think twice about doing this if someone asked and would definitely have cravings myself if I was there. Good luck!

Also yes which hospital. If it's mine I'll happily help out! ☺️

husslebussle · 11/11/2021 19:56

Thanks all. I managed to get it there via Deliveroo in the end. They left it at reception and it was labelled with my name, not my mums, so I had to phone up to sort it out, but it got there in the end. Smile

If your mums in Manchester I'll happily get her one. I'm a nurse in a big hospital there Smile

SmileyClare · 11/11/2021 20:06

Wow well done. I hope your mum enjoyed her most expensive Callipo in the world ever! She must be so touched that you went to so much trouble.

Here's wishing your mum a speedy recovery.

husslebussle · 11/11/2021 20:34

Thanks. She's terminally ill with leukemia, and the medication has left her with no appetite, a mouth full of sores and an insatiable thirst. She can no longer walk, and sadly doesn't feel able to ask the nurses for favours as they're all so busy. A callipo orange lolly is one of the few things she can enjoy right now.

What a wonderful daughter you are. Sending love to your and your mum

MichelleScarn · 11/11/2021 20:44

@husslebussle am glad she's got her calippo but honestly if the staff know of her craving am sure they would help.

SmileyClare · 11/11/2021 20:47

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm embarrassed about my flippant remark about her recovering, apologies Flowers

An ice lolly sounds like excellent medicine in those circumstances. Make sure you're looking after yourself too Op x

SmileyClare · 11/11/2021 20:50

It might be worth asking the ward staff if they could help with ice lollies for your mum when you visit? They might be able to facilitate something in the future.

Mossstitch · 11/11/2021 20:59

At my hospital when visiting is restricted because of covid you can take anything to reception and volunteers take it to the correct ward. There is usually a little shop in most hospitals, I have on occasions picked things up for patients, and I'm sure in your mum's case if you phoned the ward and explained someone would do their utmost to get what she fancies💐

Handmaid2019 · 11/11/2021 20:59

Ah bless your poor mum. I work in haematology and the ward should have nice ice lollies on the ward, sometimes it's the only thing that helps. Sorry you can't see her x

Yogawankonobi · 11/11/2021 21:02

You are lovely @husslebussle
I can imagine it means a lot to her.

I’m a nurse, we don’t mind running down to the vending machines.
