Home baked good. How long til you throw them away?

Just curious.

Daughter did some baking last week, so we have cupcakes and gingerbread biscuits left that haven't been eaten.

I would usually chuck home baked stuff after a week, but someone else said as long as they're stored well, it shouldn't matter if its up to 2 weeks.

Where is your cut off on cupcakes/biscuits you've baked at home?

When they taste stale or go moldy. If a gingerbread biscuit tastes fine, it’s good to eat

dementedpixie · 10/11/2021 12:10

Depends when the cakes go stale and the biscuits go soggy.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 10/11/2021 12:10

Gingerbread last for ages and ages.

Don’t know about cupcakes, don’t like them and never make them.

2 days Max

I put any leftovers in the freezer after a few days. They get taken out of an evening to go in packed lunches the next morning
Wouldn't throw them away Shock

Biscuits should be fine for a couple of weeks. Gingerbread might be nicer after a quick secondary blast in the oven as it has a tendency to go soggy.
Cakes are moister but will be stale after a week. In you've got buttercream / cream cheese frosting or wet ingredients like apples or plums in your cake then it should be eaten within a couple of days, maybe 4 days if refrigerated.

Should have added that fruit cake and parkin are generally better after a few days in a tin and would last for a week easily.
BarbaraofSeville · 10/11/2021 13:57

I try to freeze them after a couple of days so they don't get wasted, but whenever they go stale or mouldy or taste wrong otherwise.

It's not a food safety issue, so you will know when they're past their best.

Of course, gingerbread, fruit cake etc lasts months if not years as long as its in a sealed tub.

DedalusBloom · 10/11/2021 14:01

Ginger's a preservative so if it smells/ tastes fine then go for it. But then I've got a stomach like a cast iron elephant.

Notcontent · 10/11/2021 14:05

Surely it all depends on the type of cake or biscuit?

Some biscuits, if kept in an air tight container in a cool temperature, can stay fresh for a few weeks. Anything with cream or frosting I would store in the fridge and eat within a few days.

idontlikealdi · 10/11/2021 14:26

Until they look or smell off! 2 days is crazy professional kitchens work on a 3 day rotation. If there is fresh cream or butter involved it would be sooner.

Yup

Do you end up with a lot of food waste?
thelegohooverer · 10/11/2021 14:38

Cakes and biscuits -2 weeks if stored airtight but honestly you’ll know. There’s nothing to disguise the process.

gogohm · 10/11/2021 14:40

To be honest, nothing has ever lasted long enough to be concerned. Christmas cake etc obviously lasts month's, if there's cream in it 3 days, biscuits go soft but with high sugar content won't do you any harm

DustyMaiden · 10/11/2021 14:43

DH will kindly make a large bowl of custard and submerge any cake that “needs eating up.”

ParkheadParadise · 10/11/2021 14:55

@RacketeerRalph
The only cakes we bake at home are made by dd😉. No one really wants to eat them apart from the birds in the garden.

Lemonsyellow · 10/11/2021 14:59

I’m baffled why you would chuck it at all. Unless it’s gone mouldy.

Pythonesque · 10/11/2021 17:07

Agree about months for Christmas cake. Two years ago I'd already started preparing my fruit when we decided on a lucky chance to visit relatives in Sydney over Christmas rather than the summer. I made 3 cakes at the end of November and took one with us, leaving the other 2 wrapped in paper in sealed plastic tubs. One of those was then iced and eaten for Easter, the other became my birthday cake in May. yum!

Other cakes and biscuits in our house, several days certainly depending on their nature / whether enough made to last that long. Apple muffins and similar, anticipated surplus does need to go in the freezer but they're still fine for at least 4 days.

Anything that gets into trouble gets trimmed and I'll eat it up. I bake gluten/dairy free out of personal necessity and am NOT about to waste the results!

I’m trying to work out what’s going on with all this freezing malarkey, if we bake something (very regularly! Maybe 2-3 times a week, cakes, biscuits or whatever) there are 5 of us here that will eat it quickly, and if by the second day there’s still some left it gets packed up and delivered to our family/next door neighbours!
Nothing ever leftover here.
Dd2 is currently making biscoff Rocky road 😋

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/11/2021 18:19

I am more baffled as to how people manage to make homemade cakes last more than 24 hours without being eaten Blush

Egghead68 · 10/11/2021 18:24

I don’t throw anything away unless it’s gone mouldy/bad/too stale to eat.

Burnt0utMum · 10/11/2021 18:27

Anything we bake is normally all gone by the next day so no idea Grin

There's only two of us here and we both work away from time to time. I also try not to scarf whole trays of cake in 2/3 days.

Hence I make something, usually brownies because I like them and they're easy, have a slice or two and put the rest in the freezer. Defrosts in 30 s in the microwave when there's a 'I need cake' emergency.

I'm not on cake sharing terms with any of my neighbours unfortunately and most of my family eye anything home made with suspicion.

SheWoreYellow · 10/11/2021 18:29

When it’s gone soft or dried up. Although I’ve recently discovered how to moisten (sorry) dried up cake in the microwave.
