My M&D were both born in the 1930s which might explain their rather conservative, middle-of-the-road musical tastes. They didn't have any Mantovani or Ray Conniff albums - they were perhaps a little too young for those - but they did have a fair few James Last albums. Also, stuff like John Denver, Jack Jones, Don McLean, Carpenters, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis , Tony Christie and Neil Diamond. They had at least one Ray Charles album too which, for them, was a little more hip! Quite a lot of classical orchestral and operatic albums too, mainly from the 'These You Have Loved' series presented by Richard Baker. No 'Your Hundred Best Tunes' that I recall.

Much of the foregoing, plus whatever was on the radio and Top Of The Pops, formed the soundtrack to my youth. I have both vinyl and CD albums from many of these artists, e.g. Jack Jones, James Last and Perry Como - I confess! No Mantovani or Ray Conniff though. Nor Bert Kaempfert. Easily obtained at any charity shop but I'd need a paper bag for my head firstWink.

My Dad was born in the early 50s and my mum mid 60s. Their music taste has definitely rubbed off! I was flicking through Spotify the other day and my recently listened to was all over the place! Bay City Rollers to Tom Petty to Sweet to Quo. I bloody love it.

GoodnightGrandma · 08/11/2021 18:22

Beatles, and no it didn’t.
I prefer 70’s/80’s rock.

Camomila · 08/11/2021 18:26

Lots of Clash and Cure and other 70s/80s rock. I still like it Smile

My mum had great musical taste. She was into late-period Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Queen’s early albums and Bob Marley before he went mainstream.
Stevie Nicks’ solo album BellaDonna was played constantly in our house and will always make me think of her.

foxgoosefinch · 08/11/2021 18:29

My mum was into folk and pop and opera, and my dad a mixture of prog, blues, Americana and 80s dadrock! And they both really liked the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel, so it was pretty decent really. I grew up listening to some good stuff in the car Grin

Cocolapew · 08/11/2021 18:30

Elvis, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, John Denver, Crystal Gayle, Englebert Humperdink, were ones i can remember as well as random country and easy listening ones.
I would still listen to Elvis and I'm a big Neil Diamond fan.

PlausibleSuit · 08/11/2021 18:30

My mother listened to a lot of blues. Howlin’ Wolf, BB King, etc. My father liked country, and folk music. He also went mad for voguish things like panpipes and Gregorian chants when they were a thing in the 80s. (Yes, my dad is basically Alan Partridge.)

I have inherited zero of these specific musical tastes, although I have perhaps inherited their willingness to listen to both mainstream and non-mainstream stuff. My musical taste is broad, encompassing everything from Metallica to Aimee Mann to Mozart to Madonna.

Sadik · 08/11/2021 18:30

Parents born mid 30s. They listened to lots of jazz (they met in a Soho jazz club and left their own wedding early to go to a concert). But loads of other stuff too - from Jethro Tull / Queen / etc etc through to Ole Oprey country music (latter my mum only!). Bits of classical but not so much.

Yes, definitely rubbed off, I have wide tastes and enjoy most sorts of music (except opera)

Bokky · 08/11/2021 18:30

I grew up listening to Queen, Roxy Music, ELO - they've all made it on to my playlist.

WildRosie · 08/11/2021 18:30

For context, I was born in 1971.

Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Classical, Carpenters, MJ, late 60s-80s music.

Yes, rubbed off on all of us - 2/3 of us siblings studied music.

That being said, I don’t like the Beatles cos they’ve been over played since I was a kid and I’m 42 now.

My kids get to listen to everything from my childhood + Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica, Tool, Faithless, Darude, Stevie wonder, Stone Temple Pilots etc etc.

Sadik · 08/11/2021 18:32

Strangely despite 3 large cupboards of LPs later supplemented by cassettes / CDs, AFAIK my parents never did own a single record by the Beatles. (In fact, I know they were at one point offered free tickets to an early Beatles gig & turned them down on the grounds they were only for young teenagers Grin ) I still like the Beatles though!

Comedycook · 08/11/2021 18:33

Remember a lot of James Taylor and Dusty Springfield. ...I thought my mum was really old fashioned in her music tastes and was jealous of my best friend because her mum would listen to Capital FM! I do remember my mum listening to Whitney Houston though and I still love her music now.

A580Hojas · 08/11/2021 18:33

My mum was a pianist and into classical music but I don't remember her listening to any at home.

Dad, before he left, had some Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Carpenters - 1960s/70s Easy Listening. I can hear some of those songs with certain memories now but no, they aren't on my play list.

LubaLuca · 08/11/2021 18:35

Lots of blues, Motown and soul. It did rub off, I do still listen to a lot of what I grew up with.

TheCanyon · 08/11/2021 18:37

Yes it did, another 70s/80s rock child here. I was definitely born 20 years too late.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/11/2021 18:37

Dad born 1942, I was brought up on Beatles, Stones, Neil Diamond, John Denver, also Rachmaninoff, Sibelius et al.
Still listen to these and many other influences.
I introduced him to Kate Bush, but he never quite got the hang of The Prodigy.

DeadButDelicious · 08/11/2021 18:37

I grew up on a steady diet of Queen, David Bowie, Deep Purple, The Beatles, The Damned, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, Yes etc my mum was a massive fan of The Cure. It's definitely rubbed off on myself and my brother. I went down the goth and metal path (like my mum, I'm a huge fan of The Cure) and my brother is a musician.

TheCreamCaker · 08/11/2021 18:37

My dad (born 1918) and mum (1923) were 40 and 36 respectively when I was born (youngest of 4). Dad liked country and western. Mum liked Queen, David Bowie, Abba, The Beatles.

My own kids (now 40 and 37) were subjected to Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Bob Marley, Annie Lennox, Ray Charles

ColitisSucks · 08/11/2021 18:39

Billy Joel, Jim Croce, Fleetwood Mac, Queen. Then when I was a teen Toploader, Creed, Counting Crows, all sorts! DM would buy albums and I'd copy them onto minidisc Grin and take them to school, she was always slightly ahead of the curve when it came to music my mates would listen to - by the time I was 14 ish I'd realised this and was busy using her music to apear cool! Grin

And yes, it rubbed off, I have albums by all of them

I got 'the best of Billy Joel' for a 9th b day present! Still listen to it. I bought the soundtrack to 'born to be wild' when I was 11.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/11/2021 18:39

He always encouraged me to listen without prejudice, long before George Michael made it a thing.

alittlequinnie · 08/11/2021 18:40

I'm so glad somebody has started a thread on this.

I'm always amazed when people my age don't know about any music before they were born and wonder did their parents never play anything?

My parents born mid-1940s - lots of Everley Brothers and Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry.

Both MASSIVE Jim Reeves fans too - all of the above have rubbed off on me.

Johnny Cash featured heavily and my brother and I really like him too.

Despite being a teenager in the 80s there was a big 50s revival in Birmingham so I used to go to their pubs and clubs.

I still liked current stuff too but yes, parents big influence.

Wasn't so sure on my Mum's Daniel O'Donnel and Foster and Allen but those came in later when she was middle aged!

ColitisSucks · 08/11/2021 18:41

Oh God, yes, also Bowie, Rolling Stones, The Cure, The Who, Springsteen.
She's seen most of them live. Not jealous at all.

Pascha · 08/11/2021 18:42

1940s born parents. Lots of Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, early Elvis etc from my dad - rock and roll. Mum's tastes were more Conservative. Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkel, Val Doonican, melodious middle of the road boring.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 08/11/2021 18:44

Lots of Motown, Stax, blues. Definitely rubbed off as I still listen to it and have it on for my kids.

My dad also loved Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler, Reo Speedwagon and I also still love those - they are my guilty pleasure!

I play my kids a lot of hip hop, house, break beat, soul, neo soul, etc. They’re exposed to a lot of different kinds of music. Hoping it rubs off!
