My M&D were both born in the 1930s which might explain their rather conservative, middle-of-the-road musical tastes. They didn't have any Mantovani or Ray Conniff albums - they were perhaps a little too young for those - but they did have a fair few James Last albums. Also, stuff like John Denver, Jack Jones, Don McLean, Carpenters, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis , Tony Christie and Neil Diamond. They had at least one Ray Charles album too which, for them, was a little more hip! Quite a lot of classical orchestral and operatic albums too, mainly from the 'These You Have Loved' series presented by Richard Baker. No 'Your Hundred Best Tunes' that I recall.

Much of the foregoing, plus whatever was on the radio and Top Of The Pops, formed the soundtrack to my youth. I have both vinyl and CD albums from many of these artists, e.g. Jack Jones, James Last and Perry Como - I confess! No Mantovani or Ray Conniff though. Nor Bert Kaempfert. Easily obtained at any charity shop but I'd need a paper bag for my head firstWink.

Northern Soul, Motown and 80s hair rock were my Dads favourites. I still listen to them now, mostly on a Sunday morning.

Me? Anything and everything. There’s not much I don’t listen to. Except rap. It’s almost all vile.

isthismylifenow · 08/11/2021 19:29

Oh gosh yes. I grew up listening to Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis, Rolling Stones etc.

I've always carried on listening to that same music and so do my DC.

Just the other night dd played Needles and Pins and gosh it brought back such memories of mum and dad dancing. They were amazing.

MagicalFish · 08/11/2021 19:37

Both born early 50s and big music fans. I grew up with Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Kate Bush, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen, Michael Jackson, The Who, Guns n Roses, Joan Armatrading, The Pretenders, Simon & Garfunkel, The Stranglers...

I love all of the above plus a whole lot more. My 8 year old is really into music new and old as well.

My Mum loved Ella Fitzgerald. We even played one of her songs, Skylark, at her funeral.

My parents had pretty similar tastes - Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Mel Tormé, Nina Simone, a bit of Frank, Peter Skellern, and some ELO and classical.

Hearing any of those old school jazz musicians takes me right back to my childhood and makes me feel warm and safe.

Lovely thread!

God yes, i was born in 63 and both my parents were at art school (Chelsea and St Martins) so in their early 20s when i was born..
The Beatles, Bowie, Cream, Mamas and Papas etc, they had friends that shared a flat with Marc Bolan, we lived not far from the Kings road, so i had a crazy upbringing that shaped who i am.

Same with DS1, i always played music (loudly) when he was growing up, he went on to gain a 1st class honours degree in professional musicianship at an exclusive uni.. so music as an important part of life, runs through 3 generations in my family.

Duchess379 · 08/11/2021 19:49

My parents were born early 50s. Dad absolutely loves Brit rock - Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who etc & mum loved Mowtown. As a result, I listen to all their music. I love RnB but absolutely love The Who! I'm 45 😆

MargaretThursday · 08/11/2021 19:51

My dad:
Beach Boys
Beatles
Jerry lee Lewis (dm couldn't stand him. Df loved it very loud. I remember well the day he played Great Balls of Fire so loud that one of the speakers (which were about 3' high) leapt off the shelf)
Queen
Abba
Elvis

MONSTERSALAD · 08/11/2021 19:52

Classical music (Mum's a professional musician and Dad's an appreciative audience), and yes. I ended up in lots of choirs and I still mostly listen to classical music, although Dad and I prefer vastly different periods which can lead to interesting discussions...

MintyGreenDream · 08/11/2021 19:57

Bob Dylan.
Bruce Springsteen.
Dire Straits.
The Travelling Wilburys in our house growing up.
I'm not a massive fan of that genre but appreciate the nostalgia if I hear songs by those artists

Curlyshabtree · 08/11/2021 19:58

My parents were born late 40s. Mum loved folk, particularly Steeleye Span and lots of classical plus The Beatles and The Kinks. My dad liked bits of everything and kept up with current music. He loved ABBA, ELO, Donna Summer. I’ve taken my own kid’s musical education very seriously and have subjected them to most genres, even Steeleye Span!
I do love a bit of ABBA and ELO, they always remind me of my dad.

TroysMammy · 08/11/2021 20:00

We never had music playing. The radio was only used for my Dad listening to the horse racing and cricket scores and we only had a wind up gramaphone.

Dropitlikeitssloth · 08/11/2021 20:08

My Mum gave me my love of 70s disco, my Dad, 70s rock and my own childhood gave me 90s Brit pop and 90s grunge. It’s all influenced me and love it all still 😊

maddiemookins16mum · 08/11/2021 20:10

Mine were born 1931 and 1932, I was born 64. I have vivid memories of Freddie and The Dreamers, The Mamas and Papas and also Johnny Cash too. They were also fans of The Spinners (a folk group, not the ones from Detroit 🤣🤣).

BettyfromBristol · 08/11/2021 20:10

Vera Lynn is about the only music I remember being played. Wouldn't ever listen to it now.

Daisychainsandglitter · 08/11/2021 20:11

My mum was all about 80s pop. It was never off in our house.
Whilst I don't mind it in small doses, I much prefer indie and rock.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/11/2021 20:11

Oh, I forgot Matt Monro and Jim Reeves.

Tryingtogetitright · 08/11/2021 20:11

Parents born mid-1950s, me 1980. Grew listening to (and still love) Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, Belinda Carlisle, Billy Joel, Cher, Meatloaf, Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Glen Campbell and Sinitta!

MrsDThomas · 08/11/2021 21:00

Mum loved ABBA. So do i and the girls.

Dad loved Dire Straights, and so do i. Nit much of a fan of Richard Clayderman, Chris de Burgh and Val Doonican though

SuPerDoPer · 08/11/2021 21:14

No music in our house. Radio 4 on in the kitchen (mum) and garden (dad) at the weekends. Cricket and Rugby matches on the radio. I thought they were boring but now I love radio 4 and it's my preferred background noise in the car, kitchen and garden! Mum and dad did have a few tales that we listened to in the car: beach boys, mammas and pappas, Simon and garfunkle, buddy holly, ABBA. Mum was an elvis fan in her youth.

Skade · 08/11/2021 21:23

Both my parents loved music and we had music on more than the TV! Although to be fair I grew up on a German army camp in the 70s so not much TV to be had Grin

Dad loved Rod Stewart with a passion and so did I, although I haven’t been able to listen to his music since my dad died in 2018. He also loved Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits (although again, I can’t listen to Brothers in Arms without wailing!), and Dr Hook. My mum adored reggae, Motown and northern soul, so we had a real variety of music every day.

I love that my kids who are in their 20s now will come home and I’ll hear anything from the Eagles to Kenny Rogers to Skepta playing while they’re in the shower Grin

MooChops89 · 08/11/2021 21:43

I was born in 1989, my mum had me at 19. She listened to Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, George Michael, Whitney, Celine... all in my current Spotify playlist! I took her to watch Bryan for her birthday a few years ago, don't know which of us loved it more!

Kljnmw3459 · 08/11/2021 21:51

We always had the radio on but I don't remember them especially liking any of the music. My dad probably listened to a lot of popular music in his garage and shed. He said he liked ambient music, jazz, Beatles and other 60s music. Country music. Blues. My mum sang along to religious songs.

Timeisavirtue · 08/11/2021 22:00

Madness, a lot of MOD music.... the jam etc...
also reaggae, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Phil Collins a few others...
I love madness, love most Whitney songs and a few Madonna songs, tbh it’s rubbed off a bit but I’ve got a wide variety of taste on different types of music.... except opera, I hate opera music

stopblowingyournose · 08/11/2021 22:06

My dad was born in '21. He was very conservative about music. He only believed bing crosby and frank sinatra was acceptable pop music. Anything with percussion was bad. He listen to classical music mostly. I wasn't allowed much pop at home and if I was he bitched all the way through it.

My mum listened to Simon and Garfunkel which I absolutely love both because paul Simon is an incredible but uncomplicated artist and because it reminds me of happy times with my mum in what was a difficult childhood. She also liked Tracy Chapman and Kirsty Macoll which I also love.

bogeythefungusman · 08/11/2021 22:18

Late 1920s born - Sinatra, big band, dance band, lots of classical, 50s musicals, swing, Billie Holliday, Blossom Dearie, bluegrass. Huge influence on us kids, but it worked both ways and they were open to our listening preferences, especially in the car. We introduced DP's to the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, KD Lang, Indigo Girls.

It continues into the next generation.
