Does this sound like a scam?? Anyone have any experience of using Royal Mail Live Pay?

After some advice please. Consider myself relatively Internet savvy but this is a new system for me so I'm a little cautious.

Listed an item on gumtree for £50 (as Facebook apparently don't let you list anything deemed healthcare related including breast pumps(!))

Someone messaged me asking if I'd post it to them as they're not local at all. I initially hesitated but said as long as it was all paid upfront I was OK to do so. She said we could use Royal Mail Pay Live, where she places an order and sends the money. Then I post it. So in theory, all good.

She sent me a link for me to get the money and it is from a royal mail site. It asked for my card details to receive the payment but said as an additional security measure my bank were also requesting that I state how much money is in thay account. That strikes me as odd as I've never been asked for anything like that before. Has anyone used this service from Royal Mail before (Pay a Fee, receive Later is another name they give it) and if so were you asked for those details and was all OK? She's asked if I've received the payment and I've fobbed her off a bit saying I'll sort it later today but I want to try and work out first whether this is all legit.

Thank you in advance.

Sounds dodgy to me - have you looked on RM website to see how it works?

The only thing that comes up when I search for this is how to pay when the postage has not been fully covered by the sender. Example - when customs fees are due or incorrect postage applied to item. Are you saying there's a money transfer service of a similar name?

Fuckingfuckssake · 08/11/2021 13:47

It's not a thing, there's no reference to anything like that on the internet, anywhere, tell her PayPal or sell it to someone else.

SequinnedShawl · 08/11/2021 13:50

I've never heard of that. Why not use Paypal goods and services and send it tracked?

DogDaysNeverEnd · 08/11/2021 13:51

Why can't she put the money directly into your account? If there is any facility for her to recall the payment then best not to proceed. If she doesn't trust you to send it that's fine. I'd say payment on collection only and wait for a local buyer.

Scam

Mumdiva99 · 08/11/2021 13:56

Scam - no one paying you ever needs to know how much money you have.

Think about it.....the web site is asking you for your card details
......she also has your address probably.....she can now go and spend the amount in your account.

Unless she will pay via pay pal invoice.or direct to your account then steer clear.

Thanks all, you've confirmed what the voice in my head was saying. I messaged to say I wasn't happy to continue via that means and she replied to say she'd paid and was now expecting the goods. The link she sent me no longer works, so that answers that doesn't it.

They then said they'll pass my details on to the police if I don't send the item. I've said they're welcome to.
