Did you have unexpected benefits eating lower carbs?

I'm not low carbing per se but I have inadvertently been eating lower carbs due to a change in work circumstances.
Apart from weight loss, did anybody find anything else good happen that they weren't expecting?

OP posts:
Luxembourgmama · 06/11/2021 18:44

No period pain and the chicken skin on my arms cleared up

theturtleshead · 06/11/2021 18:51

Stopped farting. Literally incessant farting to virtually zero. Deafening silence.

TheLastLonelyBakedBean · 06/11/2021 18:52

Also the first time in 20 odd years I had no ovulation pain Shock didn't even realise that it could do that?

Another one with better bowels, eyes less puffy, nose not as stuffed up as usual, less thrush and not as fatigued.

crispinglovershighkick · 06/11/2021 19:29

I was getting loads of hot flushes - like every 10 or 15 minutes in the evenings - and I started low carbing because I heard it helped. I was prescribed hrt for it but one of the meds was out of stock for a couple of weeks so I was still waiting. Started low carb, hot flushes stopped almost immediately.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/11/2021 20:36

@KrispyKale Yes I've also had less ankle puffiness.
I'm 53 and Peri meno and trying to naturally manage menopause and all the shit things it does to your body.
I'm no beauty, but have a degree of vanity where I don't want my looks to go to shit completely, so I'm embracing anything that helps me to look better.

I've lost 6lbs in 3 weeks and have had far fewer headaches after cutting out sugar and processed carbs. I still eat porridge oats and a few berries, and today I had oatcakes and cheese for tea!

My IBS has also been much better and I generally look less bloated. Long way to go yet though, and my blood pressure hasn't come down...

Elephantsparade · 06/11/2021 20:44

More energy and not as hungry

FrownedUpon · 06/11/2021 20:49

My mood is much more stable
Flatter stomach
Less cravings for sugar/crap food

Magicmagician · 06/11/2021 20:50

My eczema has reduced loads and my skin is less dry - I wonder if it’s due to eating more fat and green leafy veg instead of carbs? I’m not proper low carb - I do still have some oats and potatoes but don’t eat sugar, veg oil or wheat. Have also lost the afternoon sluggish slump and look less puffy generally, as well as weight loss. Win win!

What do you use instead of veg oil? Olive?

Also does that mean you don't eat processed food?

This thread is really interesting. I'm convinced low carb will help me with my puffy weird skin eyes!

Me too! It was a bit depressing.
Magicmagician · 06/11/2021 21:02

Hi @bookish83 I use olive oil and butter - and yep no veg oil means avoiding processed foods. I read the Why we eat (too much) book and have been following that for about 3 months now. it’s a very simple way of eating as that’s all I have to avoid, so I don’t have to think too hard about it, and still being able to eat beans, lentils and potatoes makes it more doable for me than proper low carb, esp as I’m a veggie.

Thanks! I've heard of that book I might give it a go

I am also veggie so your posts have been really helpful, thanks. Keep up your great progress!

Minkyscamp · 06/11/2021 21:13

It has cured my chronic migraine and also vastly reduced eye puffiness. Agree with PPs saying about increased energy levels too.

Magicmagician · 06/11/2021 21:23

Ah thanks @bookish83 - hope you like the book, there’s a thread for it under weightloss too. It’s great for veggies - I do ignore his bit about omegas and no nuts and it doesn’t seem to have caused me any problems, that’s the only bit of the book I couldn’t get on board with as I love peanut butter!

HereticFanjo · 06/11/2021 21:28

More energy and less wind! I need to restart it really!

PaperMonster · 06/11/2021 21:30

@theturtleshead - ditto here with the lack of farting! I’ve not been as good with low carb over the last month thanks to feeling lousy with the super-cold and I noticed that I was actually farting again!!

hamstersarse · 06/11/2021 21:35

I have had all the previously described things like increased energy, no farts, good sleep, no bloating, but the thing that keeps me on the WOE is the relationship with food just changes completely.

I used to have 'hunger' on my shoulder all the time, it would always be there, thinking about what I'm going to eat next, desperately trying to contain my appetite.

On low carb /keto, I barely think about food, it doesn't dominate my day ever. If I don't get to eat if I'm busy at work, or out and about, it just doesn't cross my mind. My energy levels just stay the same (no light headedness etc) and there is never any hanger.

That is magical to me.

RacketeerRalph · 06/11/2021 21:36

No. Opposite actually, I felt awful and my IBS got much worse.

BIWI · 06/11/2021 21:38

Sounds like you're one of the few then @RacketeerRalph!

LadyCampanulaTottington · 06/11/2021 21:39

A lot of the above (besides the 8 stone weight loss).

No more sticky countertops and floors and no more crumbs!!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 06/11/2021 21:39

Yes to what a lot of PP have said from lack of farting to clearer skin etc. I also noticed the bobbly skin on the back of my arms and legs disappeared.

I never saw the increase in energy though.

3luckystars · 06/11/2021 21:40

Okay where can I find this boot camp! Sounds like exactly what I need.
