Do you have a overhang of skin after a C-section?

Has it gotten any lesser with time?

I'm only 8 days postpartum so early days but made the mistake of looking at my side profile in the mirror today after the shower and feel a bit miserable about what I've been left with. I have a very distinct 'apron' that hangs over the scar, not helped I'm sure by the fact I already had a small amount of loose skin after my previous pregnancy.

After 2 sections, yes, a slight one.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 03/11/2021 18:05

Yes, I did. Lost two stone, it looked even worse, just hung there over the top of my legs like a disgusting deflated skin balloon. So I had a tummy tuck.

doadeer · 03/11/2021 18:07

I don't but I do have some excess skin just under belly button. I had an enormous bump. I can feel the muscle under it (I do lots of pilates) but can't seem to shift the fat/ skin layer. It's OK in clothes but I wish it would reduce.

3 years later I still cry regularly and have had to remove the mirrors from my house otherwise I’d cry every day. It doesn’t get any better. I’m saving up for surgery.

SummerWillow · 03/11/2021 18:10

Yes, 22 years since CS. No chance it's going away but it definitely reduces with weight loss. My scar is still itchy at times.

LadyCleathStuart · 03/11/2021 18:16

Not at all but I had very small bumps (as in needed growth scans and had lots of worry about it - not a brag).

TheGirlWhoLived · 03/11/2021 18:19

@UbicornsFunkyTop3 it goes down! My overhang at 8 days post birth was HUGE, I cried for almost a whole day about it- but it carried on going down on its own for about two weeks. I’m 9 months on now so obviously it’s back to normal (still chubby but that is not the c sections fault…)

BogRollBOGOF · 03/11/2021 18:25

The offending baby is nearly 11, huge bump, EMCS after a long labour and hours of pushing... doing it neatly was not top of the surgeon's list. I'm a healthy weight, exercise a lot, it's not going anywhere by natural means.

I hated it at first. It was a reminder of a tough birth, numb and didn't even feel attached to me, like someone had just attached a load of random crinkly flesh. There was no point on doing anything about it until I was sure my family was complete and mentally I gave myself until 40 before doing anything drastic. I'm 40 now, and have got used to it over the years. Just the thought that I could do something is a bit more empowering, but it's not worth the inconvenience and risks.

Everything is high waist so it doesn't flobble out. I wear high-waist bikinis. I wasn't going to hide my body for the rest of my life!

rhowton · 03/11/2021 18:26

I had a TT in the end as I had terrible overhang and scar tissue. I had a 4 inch gap in my abs too so paid for it to be done.

Echobelly · 03/11/2021 18:30

I didn't note one afterwards, I'm slim-ish (size 10 when kids were little) but always had a tummy and no real waist, so maybe I just didn't stretch all that much down there and my body had always looked a bit post-preggy anyway!

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/11/2021 18:32

I have full shelf 9 years on.

Exercise does nothing for it as the muscles are destroyed.

CookPassBabtridge · 03/11/2021 18:32

No mine will probably always be there, I'll have to have a tummy tuck to get rid of it.

saltontoast · 03/11/2021 18:33

Yep, I do. My skin is ruined but my babies were 10lb + and I'm only slight, so this did not help.

UbicornsFunkyTop3 · 03/11/2021 18:57

Thanks for these replies, it appears to be fairly common then. Gah.

Mine was an elective (after previous birth trauma) so I almost feel a bit like "well that serves you right, it's what you wanted afterall"

I'm glad to read that in some cases it does go down / lessen alot in time. Here's to hoping I'll be one of those cases, though I won't hold my breath as my abdominal muscles are fucked knackered and I have a hernia to boot so you can imagine how sexy I look at the minute Grin

Has anybody used a postpartum binder and noticed any slight improvement?

I do have a 'lip' by my c-section which is clearly not going anywhere! I read that you can get support pants specifically to help stop the overhang. No idea if they work but wish I'd had the chance to have a go! I'd never heard of them when I needed them.

BiscuitLover09876 · 03/11/2021 19:01

Took me about a year to go down

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 03/11/2021 19:06

I have no apron or over hang. One EMCS. I am on the thin side and have lost a lot of weight 70lbs since baby born 3 years ago. I do exercise a lot and don't eat much. I appreciate that I am very lucky. I would be comfortable in a bikini. Not a brag post.

userwhatever01 · 03/11/2021 19:59

Oh buy m&s high waist control pants. Make it much easier to deal with.

And start using the JillIan Michaels app. She is The Best

Zebrasandfairytales · 03/11/2021 20:11

I had two emcs and had a very large apron. Since lost five stone but if anything it looks worse, more loose skin and hangs further down there/is very uncomfortable. I get rashes and it gets very sweaty and uncomfortable, I have to use a lot of femfresh powder to keep it dry when at work, exercising etc. so I have made the decision to have it removed privately. It will improve the quality and comfort of my life. I’m not telling many people at all. Surgery is booked for next month and (aside from being slightly worried about recovery and GA) I can’t wait to not have to think about it and look after it anymore.
Give it time. It may reduce a bit. However if it doesn’t there are other options you could explore.

CurlyMango · 03/11/2021 21:07

I also have one 16 years later. Twins. First twin arrived ventrous. And the second emergency c section.

So Zebras and Fairy tales…..what you having done. Interested

Babyroobs · 03/11/2021 21:13

Yes I have this and the scar still gets really sore at times even after 22 years.

Zebrasandfairytales · 03/11/2021 21:51

@CurlyMango I’m having full abdominoplasty with muscle repair. So essentially they will make an incision hip to hip, repair my muscles that have separated, remove the excess skin and scar tissue (the surgeon estimates it to be about 7lb in weight) then create me a new belly button and sew me back up. I’ll be in hospital for two nights with drains and a catheter etc. Will also need a couple of weeks off work. It feels big but I’m mentally very ready. I am very active and my excess skin is a real pain and discomfort to me.

Username112233 · 03/11/2021 21:53

You'll honestly be fine, mine never stayed Smile

DDMAC · 03/11/2021 22:35

I have an apron, 11 years post partum so it ain’t going anywhere unless I get a tummy tuck. No C section either so it’s not a c section thing
