How safe is tap water really?

I have been reading about tap water and how safe it is to drink. It's mind -boggling when you think that we are drinking the same water we use for the toilet, washing, etc.and it's just recycled and treated. But what about the evidence stated in this website..

www.aquacure.co.uk/knowledge-base/truth-about-uks-water-supply

The website states there is evidence that tap water contains synthetic hormones which are contained in the contraceptive pill. We used to collect water from a spring but stopped when there was a notice saying it had been tested and found to contain harmful bacteria. Since we gave up spring water, we have not been able to conceive although we had no trouble with DS. Was it a coincidence that we weren't drinking tap water back then?

Even more scary maybe because of the unknowns, is the fact they have found micro-plastics in 72% of water samples in the UK/EU. Microbeads and man-made fibres are now present everywhere on earth and they are in our water supply.

The article ends by saying...
'In summary, the tap water in the UK is classed as one of the safest and purest water supplies in the world. It is required by law to be fit for human consumption and UK water companies must test mains water for a reassuringly long list of micro-organisms and chemicals.'

Based on the micro plastics, I'm tempted to go back to spring water. But what do you drink, tap of bottled? Can we really trust our water supplies?

This is bonkers, it's like using formula because you're worried about toxins in breast milk (that was a real thread on here many years ago!)

The poster seemed to miss that formula is made from cows milk and cows are also exposed to environmental toxins...

Anyway. We no doubt come into contact with all manner of undesirable stuff through the food we eat or drink, our cosmetics, the air, whatever. The thing is, ever since we have existed that has happened. If we were really so delicate that we couldn't cope with a bit of toxin how do you think we survived the era where we were cooking on open flames with very little in the way of chimneys? Or in the wild coming into contact with various plants and animals. Or before we had good cold food storage? Toxins aren't a modern thing, it's just that exactly what we come into contact with has changed. But our bodies can generally handle small amounts of poisons perfectly fine.

I'm sorry you weren't able to have a second child but it is almost certainly down to your age and not the fact that you were drinking tap water. I know this isn't nice to hear but finding reason in a advert dressed up as an article is far less likely than all the research on women's fertility post 40.

I guess you just wanted to get a reaction from me, stupid old 40+ woman who blames tap water for secondary infertility. How do you know I'm 40+? You've obviously researched my posts on here. We never really tried hard to conceive tbh so my tap water theory was just one thing I have wondered about over the years. I'm really not bothered any more.

Our water is hard and scales everything up badly. I can imagine it would do the same to a catheter as a pp mentioned.

And please to those who keep saying I buy spring water in bottles..I don't and never did! We used glass bottles to collect it from a spring.

Honestly wish I'd never started this thread!

OP I really wasn't commenting to get a reaction and I wasn't trying to be unkind. But you framed your OP using an article from a company that sells water purification equipment and posed the question that could tap water be the reason you didn't conceive.

I happened to remember you from one of your recent threads on menopause as your username is one of my friends surname that's all.

And I'm over 40... very lucky enough to be pregnant but only after a horrendous journey due to (likely) age related infertility. So I was merely pointing out the more obvious reason.

BooseysMom · 04/11/2021 06:59

@BlusteringBoobies... ok, hands up! I'm sorry. I was over touchy. I didn't check the origin of that article before posting so didn't realise they were selling stuff. Stupid I know!

Also I want to apologise to those people who rightly mentioned the fact that millions have no access to clean safe water supplies. (And those in that awful situation) When we used to collect water from the spring, someone from Water Aid talked to us about their work and we raised funds for them for quite a while. Something I would consider doing again.

So I do understand how lucky we are in the UK to have access to clean safe tap water.

I drink spring water, have a private water supply as rural. Didn’t you treat the spring water? Normally it’s run through several filters and then uv light to kill off bugs.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 04/11/2021 07:32

Op you are not struggling to conceive because you are drinking tap water .
Honestly we are really lucky to have accessible clean water I’d find something else to worry about but good luck with ttc .

Apology accepted Flowers

I think WaterAid is one of the most worthwhile charities around.

Imagine if everyone bought just one bottle less per week and donated the money to Wateraid...

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

They put Aluminium sulphate in water, Aluminium in your brain is very bad and they're starting to do research to see if it causes alzheimer's.

What does that unverified statement have to do with my question?

hedgehogger1 · 04/11/2021 18:14

I mean it's absolutely disgusting at one point all water was in a dinosaurs shit

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/11/2021 18:40

This thread is making me think of .

A580Hojas · 04/11/2021 18:43

I only drink 1 glass of water a day so obviously I'm protecting my health Hmm

FuckToiletTraining · 04/11/2021 18:51

@BooseysMom

Thank you everyone for your comments. I didn't say we drink spring water from plastic bottles. We used to collect it from a spring on the hills near to where we live. We used glass demijohns.
Wait. What??

You think tap water might be unsafe but you’re happy to drink untreated, unfiltered water on a hill in open nature.

Ok lady.
