How safe is tap water really?

I have been reading about tap water and how safe it is to drink. It's mind -boggling when you think that we are drinking the same water we use for the toilet, washing, etc.and it's just recycled and treated. But what about the evidence stated in this website..

www.aquacure.co.uk/knowledge-base/truth-about-uks-water-supply

The website states there is evidence that tap water contains synthetic hormones which are contained in the contraceptive pill. We used to collect water from a spring but stopped when there was a notice saying it had been tested and found to contain harmful bacteria. Since we gave up spring water, we have not been able to conceive although we had no trouble with DS. Was it a coincidence that we weren't drinking tap water back then?

Even more scary maybe because of the unknowns, is the fact they have found micro-plastics in 72% of water samples in the UK/EU. Microbeads and man-made fibres are now present everywhere on earth and they are in our water supply.

The article ends by saying...
'In summary, the tap water in the UK is classed as one of the safest and purest water supplies in the world. It is required by law to be fit for human consumption and UK water companies must test mains water for a reassuringly long list of micro-organisms and chemicals.'

Based on the micro plastics, I'm tempted to go back to spring water. But what do you drink, tap of bottled? Can we really trust our water supplies?

Yes.

TillyDevon · 03/11/2021 15:12

Ps I do feel tap water is of course safe though, it just may not be as pure as it once might have been. I certainly wouldn’t buy plastic bottles to add to the issue, but some filtration systems might be worth the cost perhaps

eightlivesdown · 03/11/2021 15:18

I drink tap water. If we all drink bottled water, that's a lot of plastic bottles to be disposed of.

FuckyNel · 03/11/2021 15:20

Well I've done alright so far so has my dog and my family

thenumberseven · 03/11/2021 15:22

I live in a small Spanish inland town, here the water is from a spring and of course properly treated yet people buy gallons and gallons of water, to me the water from the mains tastes amazing and comes cold out of the tap, in winter very cold. When I drink shop bought water it tastes of plastic and not very nice
Occasionally it doesn't taste as nice for a few hours and I guess that's when it's just been treated

NiceGerbil · 03/11/2021 15:25

Yes it's true.

That's why people in London don't have children and are all very ill. Trufact. In fact I've now got 3 arms and antlers due to the water here.

Don't be silly OP.

NiceGerbil · 03/11/2021 15:26

If you're really that worried and have outdoor space then you can collect rainwater. That's not in short supply.

That's a serious suggestion btw.

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 15:27

@Tal45

Aren't bottled waters supposed to be full of microplastics? And you have no idea how long that water has been sitting in that plastic bottle.
Yep, I’m pretty sure studies found bottled water had more micro plastics than tap. And the plastic they use for water bottles contains BPA which is an endocrine-disrupting chemical.

Secondary infertility is quite common OP and it’s unlikely to be due to tap water.

NiceGerbil · 03/11/2021 15:27

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

Switch to Sprite?
Coke is nice mmmmm
Coriandersucks · 03/11/2021 15:29

I have no idea as not researched it though.

That about sums it up

SnowWhitesSM · 03/11/2021 15:30

Have a look into Paris's tap water. They clean it up without chlorine (unlike ours). They have vending machines for reusable bottles and fountains everywhere for drinking water. Some water fountains are for sparking water. People fill their bottle up to take home. Water is for everyone in Paris.

@TimetohittheroadJack

Yeah, clearly, the Chardonnay is having an effect. It should have read cleaning my teeth makes my Chardonnay taste weird.
We're let you off since you have been cleaning your teeth with Chardonnay..
FlowerArranger · 03/11/2021 15:31

@cuttlefishgame

If we hadn't drunk water out of plastic bottles there wouldn't be so much contamination with plastic microbeads in the first place.
Quite.

@BooseysMom...... do you REALLY want to add to the problem?!! In any case, the article you read is clearly biased and aimed to sell you stuff you do not need.

Buy a filter for your drinking water if you want to purify it further, but otherwise be grateful for the clean water that comes out of our taps. Much of the rest of the world isn't so fortunate.

CormoranStrike · 03/11/2021 15:32

I drink tap water and trust it totally

Footle · 03/11/2021 15:36

@TillyDevon , I'm not sure I've understood your post but my periods started in 1959 when I was 10.

BooseysMom · 03/11/2021 15:40

Thank you everyone for your comments. I didn't say we drink spring water from plastic bottles. We used to collect it from a spring on the hills near to where we live. We used glass demijohns.

Always amazes me the Brits fear of drinking forrin tap water and insisting on bottled. Maybe in developing country with water borne diseases but in Western Europe it seems ott.

How safe is tap water really?

Safer than an unregulated spring on a hillside.

SickAndTiredAgain · 03/11/2021 15:54

The threads are getting nuttier and nuttier on here.

knittingaddict · 03/11/2021 16:03

I think tap water is very safe to drink, but I use a water filter because it improves the taste and stops our hard water furring up the kettle.

I am partial to bottled sparkling water too, but not all the time.

tocas · 03/11/2021 16:05

Step away from google

LikeACatInTheDark · 03/11/2021 16:06

Tap water is safe.
Avoid drinking directly from rivers, OP, and you'll be fine.

Wow, tap water as contraception! Now that would be a breakthrough.

Gymohithoughtyousaidgin · 03/11/2021 16:09

We only drink bottled water. Not for any health benefit I just think tap water (or council soda as its more commonly known) is gross. Turned the kids into water snobs now too.
